Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
In the end, Tang Yueshan never got a chance to defend himself, because it was finally their turn in line.
“We came from Quyang City. My grandfather is a merchant of the State of Jin. My whole family was detained by them, and I only just barely managed to escape. Please, both of you, show some mercy and let me enter the city to seek refuge.”
This time, Gu Jiao was reciting lines word for word.
She didn’t bother with any of her dazzling, eye-searing acting. Yet surprisingly, the result was even better than expected.
“My grandfather has lived in Great Yan for decades. I was born and raised in Quyang City, so I don’t speak the Jin language very well.”
As she spoke, Gu Jiao took out a pouch of silver and slipped it into the city guard’s hand.
The two of them were allowed through the gates without issue.
Not as strict as she had expected.
Was it because the Jin army was lax in discipline and security, or were they simply overconfident, completely unafraid of enemy spies sneaking into the city to gather intelligence?
As Gu Jiao pondered this, she began surveying the sights within Pucheng.
Pucheng was an even larger and more prosperous city than Quyang. Its population was double that of Quyang, and the annual taxes it paid to the court were triple.
However, what Gu Jiao saw before her now bore no resemblance to what a thriving city ought to look like.
Shops had their doors tightly shut, the streets were eerily deserted, and fabric shop signs fluttering in the wind had been torn to shreds by the Jin soldiers.
…This city was bleeding.
“Let her go! You beasts! Let her go— Let her go——”
From a shop not far ahead came the choked voice of a woman shouting in fury.
The woman clung tightly to the leg of a Jin soldier, while he and his comrade were dragging away a young girl with delicate features and a well-groomed appearance.
The girl had already been beaten half unconscious, no longer able to cry or resist, and could only be dragged by the two soldiers into an alleyway.
Judging by her clothing and jewelry, she was clearly the daughter of a wealthy household.
Once the object of admiration and flattery, she was now nothing more than prey in the eyes of the occupying army.
Pucheng had fallen into Jin hands, and her status and identity no longer held any weight.
The fall of a nation, the ruin of a family. Such had always been the way of the world.
A Jin soldier kicked the woman away, grabbed his belt, and dragged the young girl deeper into the alley.
Who knew how many such atrocities had already occurred in the unseen corners of this city?
Gu Jiao gripped her reins tightly.
She was furious.
These Jin soldiers, they truly enraged her!
“This is war.” Tang Yueshan sighed quietly. He raised a hand to block her view. “Alright, stop looking. I’ll take care of it.”
With those words, he dismounted and headed into the alley.
With his level of martial skill, two Jin soldiers were nothing. In just a few blinks, both men had fallen by his hand, and he quickly found a place to deal with their bodies.
The woman who had been knocked unconscious awoke and rushed into the alley to carry her young mistress away.
Both of them were so frightened that they completely forgot to express their gratitude.
By the time they came to their senses and wanted to kneel and thank their benefactor, Tang Yueshan had already mounted his horse again and left together with Gu Jiao.
Gu Jiao rode her Black Wind Cavalry down the desolate, cold street and said, “The situation in Pucheng is even worse than I imagined.”
When the Nangong Family took over Quyang City, they did so under the banner of overthrowing a tyrant ruler, restoring order, and bringing prosperity to the nation, and so they at least treated the people in the city with some degree of decency.
But the Jin army had no such qualms.
They were here as invaders, and to them, the people of Great Yan were not human beings but resources to be plundered at will.
“This war must be brought to an end as soon as possible.”
Gu Jiao said this solemnly.
“Someone’s coming!” Tang Yueshan alerted her.
The two of them immediately dismounted.
Coming toward them was a company of Jin soldiers, about a hundred strong, led by a squad leader.
As they passed by the two, the squad leader gave only a brief, disinterested glance.
The young master was in disheveled clothes and his servant was nothing worth paying attention to. The squad leader continued on with his men and left without incident.
Only after confirming the soldiers had gone far did Tang Yueshan speak. “We’ve been here a while now, and still no sign of Old Gu. If I had known I’d be the one coming, I would’ve told him to leave a signal.”
Gu Jiao replied blandly, “We’ll carry on with our own investigation.”
Whether we investigate or not isn’t the point. What I really want is to see the two of you meeting after your disguises were exposed.
A strong instinct for self-preservation made Tang Yueshan swallow that suicidal comment.
“Where are you planning to start looking?” He asked.
“The City Lord’s residence.” Gu Jiao replied.
Tang Yueshan nearly choked.
He was certain Gongsun Yu was most likely staying at the City Lord’s residence, and that place was crawling with top-level experts. Even he wouldn’t dare to be so bold, yet this kid had the nerve!
But without entering the tiger’s den, how could one catch a tiger cub? All the valuable intelligence the Jin army possessed would be at the City Lord’s residence, so even if it was a den of dragons and tigers, they had to charge in today.
“You don’t have to come.” Gu Jiao said. “This war has nothing to do with the Tang Family.”
Xiao Heng was Marquis Xuanping’s legitimate son. It made sense that he would help his son pacify Great Yan. However, Tang Yueshan didn’t owe them anything. He had no reason to risk his life like this.
Tang Yueshan gave a cold snort. “Who do you think you’re looking down on?”
A mere girl dared to break in, and he, the Supreme Commander of all military forces of the State of Zhao, didn’t dare?
Seeing this, Gu Jiao said no more.
The two of them made their way to a quiet area near the City Lord's residence and found an empty courtyard where they could settle the Black Wind King and the Black Wind Cavalry horse.
“Why do I get the feeling you’re very familiar with this border region? Have you been here before?”
“In a way.”
It was in Pucheng that she had been killed during that chaotic battle.
She had died beneath a cold, gleaming peacock-feather sword, stabbed through the heart from behind with a single strike.
The sword’s owner was an exceptionally skilled swordsman, dressed in black and wearing a bronze mask with fanged teeth.
This war had broken out approximately nine years earlier than it had in the dream, and as a result, many of the details had accordingly changed.
For instance, the State of Liang’s military strength wasn’t as formidable as it had been in the dream.
On one hand because their own Great Yan forces had grown significantly stronger, and on the other hand because the State of Liang’s second most powerful general was still in the process of being brought to their side.
Had the war truly started nine years later, they would have had to face not only Chu Feipeng but also that second formidable general as enemies.
From this, it could be inferred that the troop deployments of the State of Jin would also not be exactly the same as they had been years in the future.
This was precisely why Gu Jiao was determined to come and gather military intelligence.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
