Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Gu Jiao’s red-tasselled spear was far too conspicuous, so she had left it behind in the military camp stationed in Quyang City; her current weapon was a whip she had snatched from Gu Chengfeng’s hands.
Tang Yueshan’s Tang Family bow was hardly low-profile either, but he couldn’t bear to part with his treasured weapon and insisted on bringing it along, wrapping it in cloth to conceal it. Fortunately, his cover identity was that of a mute martial servant, so it didn’t raise much suspicion.
Tang Yueshan inspected his Tang Family bow no fewer than eight hundred times in a single day. After one final check, he clapped his hands in satisfaction and said, “Alright, let’s go lie in wait near the City Lord's residence first, and wait until it gets dark to take action.”
Back when the two of them had been stationed at the border of the State of Zhao, every City Lord's residence had been heavily guarded, but the situation here was completely different.
Either Gongsun Yu didn’t reside in the City Lord's residence at all, or he was absolutely confident that no outsider could possibly infiltrate it.
The first possibility was quickly ruled out.
Because just as they were lying in ambush inside an empty grain shop near the mansion, they saw a group of people riding out through the main gates of the Cty Lord’s residence.
There was one horse-drawn carriage accompanied by twenty mounted guards.
At a glance, Gu Jiao immediately recognized the guard leading the group.
Gongsun Yu had four fearsome generals under his command: the solitary swordsman Min Hongyi, the mighty warrior Xie Hangzhou, the iron-fist Zhu Zhangkuang, and Yue Liuyi, who specialized in hidden weapons and battlefield formations.
The man before them was none other than the solitary swordsman, Min Hongyi.
Gu Jiao was inwardly surprised. It was unexpected that Min Hongyi had already been by Gongsun Yu’s side so early. She wondered if the remaining three had also been recruited by him already.
For someone like Min Hongyi to willingly serve as an escort, the only person worthy of that level of loyalty could be none other than Gongsun Yu.
Gu Jiao used her fingertip to write a name in the dust-covered surface of the table: Gongsun Yu.
Though Tang Yueshan was surprised by how Gu Jiao had come to this conclusion, he tacitly held his breath without asking further.
There was absolutely no trace of aura emanating from within the carriage. Had Gu Jiao not said anything, he would have assumed a completely ordinary person was sitting inside.
This pointed to a rather thorny problem: Gongsun Yu was already strong enough to completely conceal his own presence.
It was always harder to restrain than to release.
For example, Chang Jing’s presence was always accompanied by an overwhelming, terrifying aura, whereas Long Yi was capable of making others completely unaware of his existence.
The two of them had originally planned to follow Gongsun Yu’s group, but they immediately abandoned that idea.
Tang Yueshan clearly understood just how terrifying a person at that level of mastery could be, and Gu Jiao had personally seen Gongsun Yu in action. With Min Hongyi by his side as well, their chances of success were slim to none.
After Gongsun Yu and his entourage had gone far enough, the two of them waited a while longer and used the shift change among the guards as cover to quietly sneak into the residence.
They had barely set foot inside and not yet even steadied themselves when Gu Jiao spotted a second master-level figure——the mighty warrior, Xie Hangzhou.
No wonder the place wasn’t guarded by a large military force.
Gongsun Yu himself was an unmatched martial expert, and with both Min Hongyi and Xie Hangzhou stationed here, no assassin would stand a chance of threatening him within the residence.
The two pressed tightly against the artificial rock wall.
Tang Yueshan gave her a questioning look. With that expert present, it would be dangerous to move. He would definitely sense them!
Gu Jiao frowned slightly. It would be best if he just went out too.
Tang Yueshan replied with a look that said: With all due respect, that was a little too optimistic.
But then, Xie Hangzhou received a report from a servant, probably regarding the military camp, and rode out of the residence with a few trusted guards.
Tang Yueshan: “…”
Girl, what kind of luck do you have?
No other terrifyingly powerful figure appeared in the residence, so the two of them cautiously slipped into Gongsun Yu’s study.
“Wow, this Gongsun Yu really has a thing for collecting weapons.” Tang Yueshan couldn’t help exclaiming as he looked around at the room filled with armaments.
Gu Jiao said calmly, “Every time Gongsun Yu kills an expert, he takes their weapon.”
To most people, such items would be damning evidence of murder, but to Gongsun Yu, each weapon served as a medal commemorating his path as a warrior, each one a silent witness to his strength and victories.
Tang Yueshan shuddered with revulsion; killing was bad enough, but collecting the weapons of the dead? What kind of twisted hobby was that!
“I’ve found it!” Gu Jiao announced.
“What is it?” Tang Yueshan put down the weapon he was examining and came over, only to see that Gu Jiao had already unearthed a military deployment map for the State of Jin, along with a thick dossier.
“This should be a campaign log.” Gu Jiao said thoughtfully, “It seems every piece of information on the Jin army is recorded here.”
This was an incredibly valuable lead!
Tang Yueshan hesitated for a moment before asking, “So… should we take it with us?”
They certainly could take it, but doing so would alert Gongsun Yu that someone had broken in, and the content of the maps and documents would be altered as a result.
Copying it down would take too long.
The only option was to memorize it on the spot.
If she could read the script used by the State of Jin, it would have been much easier.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t.
She could only rely on her photographic memory to retain the shapes of the characters, an ability she had been specially trained in during her past life within the organization. Her speed and accuracy had ranked just below the Godfather himself.
However, she had never tried memorizing such a vast amount of unfamiliar symbols in one sitting.
Gu Jiao closed her eyes and concentrated all her focus, imprinting every piece of information from the dossier into her memory with meticulous precision.
Tang Yueshan stared at her in astonishment. “You’ve got to be kidding… you can do that?”
A person who could march and fight like a seasoned soldier, and still had such an incredible brain. Was this even fair to the rest of them?
By the time she had finished memorizing the last character, Gu Jiao’s head felt as though it had exploded from the strain.
Seeing her pale complexion, Tang Yueshan quickly asked, “Hey, are you alright?”
Gu Jiao braced one hand against the table and held her forehead with the other. “Just overused my brain… I’ll be fine after a bit of rest.”
Tang Yueshan was a rough man by nature. He thought Gu Jiao’s ability to memorize an entire dossier was impressive, but he didn’t truly grasp just how extraordinary it was. If one of the imperial court’s great scholars had been present, they might have fallen to their knees on the spot.
Such mental prowess had already surpassed the limits of what any normal person could achieve.
“Let’s go. There’s nothing else useful here.”
But just as Gu Jiao took her first step, the pain in her head overwhelmed her, and she blacked out, collapsing. Fortunately, Tang Yueshan was quick enough to catch her before she hit the ground.
“So it’s true. Scholars really are weak. Look at you! Barely flipped through a couple pages and already more exhausted than after a full-on battle!”
Tang Yueshan muttered complaints as he worked, but his hands moved with care and decisiveness. He swung his large bow to his front and hoisted Gu Jiao onto his back.
At that moment, Gu Jiao was gritting her teeth through the searing pain in her skull, replaying and reinforcing the memorized characters in her mind over and over again.
She spared a bit of attention to say to Tang Yueshan, “I can’t be interrupted.”
“Alright, alright, just focus on remembering!” Tang Yueshan obediently shut his mouth and didn’t speak to her again.
Carrying Gu Jiao on his back, he used his qinggong to leap over the manor walls and escape the City Lord’s residence.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:
Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
