"What are you looking at?"

Tang Yueshan tugged lightly at Gu Jiao’s sleeve and gestured toward the open space ahead of their horse, reminding her, “It’s time to move forward.”

A large gap had already formed in the line before them, and the commoners queuing behind were growing increasingly impatient.

Even though entering the city wasn’t something they truly desired, it wasn't as if dawdling outside would earn them more silver either.

It was better to get the process over with early so they could return home and rest.

Gu Jiao replied, "Nothing in particular, just looking around casually."

The Black Wind King took a few steps forward.

At that moment, the carriage ahead had already passed through the city gate checkpoint without issue.

The reason it could be called “without issue” was because Gu Jiao noticed that the guards stationed at the gate seemed to already know the owner of that carriage.

In fact, they didn’t even bother to inspect it and simply let it through without question.

There was only one person in this world who looked that much like her husband.

But wasn’t he supposed to be hiding safely at a manor arranged by Shangguan Yan?

In order to prevent him from sneaking out, Shangguan Yan had even given the guards strict orders under threat of death.

——Of course, Gu Jiao figured that Shangguan Yan probably didn’t fully understand just how unruly and unpredictable her own son could be.

Even someone like Wang Xu had been so easily manipulated by him——

What was truly strange, though, was why he would appear at the border now, and even more baffling, why he looked like he was doing quite well for himself in Pucheng.

“What in the world is going on?”

She didn’t believe she had mistaken him for someone else, but she also couldn’t think of any reasonable explanation for that person to be present on territory controlled by the Jin army.

Neither possibility made any real sense.

“What are you mumbling about?” Tang Yueshan asked in a low voice. “Muttering like some mystic at the crack of dawn. What, did seeing the Crown Princess remind you of your little husband?”

The Crown Princess was Xiao Heng’s birth mother, after all. It was perfectly natural to be reminded of someone upon seeing a close relation.

Gu Jiao turned to look at him. “By the way, how did you know that the Crown Princess is Xiao Heng’s birth mother?”

Tang Yueshan didn’t bother to hide it. “Empress Dowager Zhuang and Old Chief told me. Otherwise, who would dare speculate about a secret that huge? Speaking of which, that old Xiao really was a lucky guy. Back then, I even knew about how he saved that slave girl from the State of Yan.”

Gu Jiao looked at him oddly. “How did you know about that?”

Tang Yueshan answered offhandedly, “I was there at the time.”

Gu Jiao: “Hm?”

Tang Yueshan’s face changed instantly.

Crap, he’d let it slip.

Ah, well, what’s done is done.

Since he already spilled a little, spilling a bit more wouldn’t hurt.

With a long sigh, Tang Yueshan said, “The events back then were… complicated. You probably thought the Crown Princess was someone Old Xiao brought back from the army camp, didn’t you? That a few camp prostitutes showed up, and one of them was so breathtakingly beautiful that the ordinary soldiers didn’t dare touch her and decided to offer her to their boss first?”

To be fair, Gu Jiao had indeed speculated something along those lines before.

“But that’s not how it happened at all.” Tang Yueshan said, waving his hand dismissively.

In truth, Xiao Ji hadn’t brought her back from a military encampment. He had rescued her from an underground martial arena.

At the time, elite experts from the six states had gathered there. Xiao Ji wasn’t ranked first among them, but the top-ranked expert from the six states had taken a liking to that slave girl and tried to claim her for himself.

In desperation, the slave girl had begged Xiao Ji for help.

And Xiao Ji, a hero whose one weakness had always been a beautiful woman in distress, rose to the occasion and directly challenged the man who held the number one rank.

The outcome, as one might expect, was that the so-called top expert was thoroughly and humiliatingly beaten.

Back then, Xiao Ji hadn’t yet reached the level of strength he would later achieve, and defeating the top expert from the six states came at a tremendous personal cost.

Tang Yueshan had always assumed that after Xiao Ji had his fun with the girl, he would simply send her away. After all, Xiao Ji had always been the type to pass through fields of flowers without ever getting entangled.

No one would have expected the two of them to end up having a child together.

However, Xiao Ji probably didn't know that when Shangguan Yan was locked in the cage at the underground martial arena, she didn't just randomly seek his help. Back when they were in Great Yan’s underground martial arena, Shangguan Yan had once knocked off Xiao Ji's mask.

In other words, she had seen his face before.

He still remembered the look of awe on the little girl’s face, “I, I’m Ah Yan. Who are you?”

Xiao Ji had sustained serious injuries in the previous match, his senses dulled, unable to see or hear clearly.

He didn’t speak. He simply picked up the mask from the ground with an expressionless face, put it back on, and walked away without a backward glance.

The young Shangguan Yan had stood there, staring blankly at his retreating figure for a long, long time.

That look in her eyes... it was the same look I had when I stared at my sister-in-law, Tang Yueshan added silently in his heart.

After hearing Tang Yueshan’s words, Gu Jiao was astonished. “So the number one expert in the capital’s underground martial arena is actually Marquis Xuanping?”

No wonder he was always so elusive and rarely seen. It was probably because after injuring his lower back, he never returned to that place again.

Something occurred to her, and Gu Jiao asked, “Were you also part of the underground martial arena?”

Tang Yueshan straightened his back slightly. “Ahem… more or less.”

Gu Jiao said, “Mind your status.”

Tang Yueshan’s face darkened as he obediently hunched back down a little.

“What rank were you back then?” Gu Jiao asked again.

Tang Yueshan gave a dry laugh. “I never took part in such pointless duels.”

Gu Jiao shot him a sidelong glance. “Sounds like your rank was quite low.”

“Hey! Do you have to look down on me like that? I already said I just couldn’t be bothered with those matches!” If it weren’t for the time and place, Tang Yueshan would have exploded on the spot. He held up three fingers. “Third!”

In the underground martial arenas of the State of Zhao, only those ranked in the top three were qualified to go to the State of Yan.

“Who was second?” Gu Jiao asked.

Tang Yueshan gave a snort. “Who else could it be?”

I knew who they were, while they had no idea who I was. That, right there, is the true skill of someone like me, Tang Yueshan!

“So that means Gu Changqing earned the qualification to go to the State of Yan by defeating you.” Gu Jiao said.

Tang Yueshan snapped, “I let him win! I had already figured out he was Gu Changqing!”

Gu Jiao pursed her lips. “Easy to say after the fact.”

Tang Yueshan’s eyes flared with righteous indignation, I'm telling the truth, damn it!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
