The State of Jin had always been the most deeply rooted and powerful among the six states, their military and economic resources far surpassing those of the State of Liang, and the general they had sent, Gongsun Yu, was far more troublesome than Chu Feipeng.

“Alright then, let’s go find Old Gu!”

Incidentally, Tang Yueshan was also rather eager to witness the moment when Old Gu and the little girl "recognized" each other. It was sure to be a spectacular show.

With mischief in mind, Tang Yueshan deliberately kept Gu Jiao in the dark about the fact that her true identity had already been revealed in front of Gu Chao. He was just waiting to watch the drama unfold between those two.

Gu Jiao frowned at him and said, “I have a feeling you’re up to something.”

Was it really that obvious?

Tang Yueshan put on a serious face and replied, “I am not, don’t talk nonsense.”

......

Gu Jiao returned to her tent and packed up some medicinal herbs and her tools for field operations, along with a first aid kit and a set of dark clothing for traveling by night.

At this time, Shangguan Yan was still inside Marquis Xuanping’s tent. The lamp had been moved, and its light no longer cast any silhouettes onto the tent walls.

Gu Jiao thought about it for a moment but ultimately decided not to interrupt them.

Instead, she went to speak with Advisor Hu, asking him to pass along a message to the Crown Princess and her “father,” letting them know that she and Old Tang were heading to Pucheng to gather military intelligence and would likely return in three to five days.

“You’re not going to wait until after meeting the Crown Princess?” Advisor Hu asked, clearly out of concern for her. This was a prime opportunity to make a good impression in front of the Crown Princess, and she would certainly remember Gu Jiao’s contributions.

If, during the time Gu Jiao was away from Quyang, the imperial army or the frontier forces earned new military honors, it could potentially dilute the recognition owed to her.

But Advisor Hu was overthinking it. Commander Xiao was the Crown Princess’s very own daughter-in-law. When it came to credit and merit, who could possibly overshadow Gu Jiao?

“No need. I’m leaving now.”

When Gu Jiao arrived beside her tent, the Black Wind King had already woken up and was standing there in high spirits, fully alert and waiting for her.

Initially, Gu Jiao hadn’t planned to bring the Black Wind King along, thinking it best for him to rest a few more days, but the steed had already shaken off all signs of fatigue and was clearly back in battle-ready form.

He was clearly determined to accompany her no matter what.

Gu Jiao patted his neck and said, “Alright, let’s head out together.”

Tang Yueshan rode over on the Black Wind Cavalry horse he had been assigned. These horses were the finest among all six nations, and once someone had the chance to ride one, they would never want to touch another breed again.

If the Black Wind Cavalry horses were already so impressive, then one could only imagine how it must feel to ride the legendary Black Wind King.

Tang Yueshan gave a light cough and said, “Hey, girl, how about a trade. Let me ride your horse for a bit?”

Gu Jiao replied, “Then let me use your bow.”

Tang Yueshan immediately reached back to shield the Tang Family bow slung over his back and said with great seriousness, “Only heirs of the Tang Family are qualified to even touch this bow. You’re not allowed!”

Gu Jiao ignored him and swung herself up onto the horse.

Suddenly, the Black Wind King lashed out at Tang Yueshan’s mount, rearing up on its hind legs and sending the other horse into a full-body shiver, its mane standing on end and hooves nearly slipping out from under it.

“Hey!” Tang Yueshan quickly bent down and tightened the reins, trying to soothe the frightened Black Wind Cavalry horse.

Meanwhile, Gu Jiao raised her hand with practiced ease and nonchalantly ran her fingers across the Tang Family bow strapped to his back——

There, she touched it.

Tang Yueshan: “…”

One tall figure and one small one galloped into the night, leaving Quyang City behind as they headed toward Pucheng under cover of darkness.

Gu Jiao knew of a shortcut that would allow them to reach Pucheng by dawn.

The only problem was that Pucheng was currently occupied by the Jin army, and sneaking in wouldn’t be an easy task.

They would need to disguise themselves, and that went for the horses too. They couldn’t afford to let anyone recognize that they were riding the battle-hardened Black Wind King and Black Wind Cavalry horse.

“Girl, are you sure this is going to work?”

In a wooded area near the city gates, Tang Yueshan was following Gu Jiao’s instructions, smearing mud all over the horses' bodies.

Gu Jiao was busy messing up the Black Wind King’s mane; after all, the more disheveled, the better. They needed to look like desperate refugees fleeing from a nearby city.

After that, Gu Jiao applied disguises to both herself and Tang Yueshan.

“Are we going in as father and daughter?” Tang Yueshan asked.

Gu Jiao shot him a sidelong glance and replied, “Young master and mute servant.”

Tang Yueshan: “…”

By the time everything was ready, the sky had already begun to lighten.

The two of them, looking utterly ragged and riding dirt-covered horses with what appeared to be bloodstains on them, arrived at the gates of Pucheng.

Unlike Marquis Xuanping, who had an old flame from the State of Yan and could speak their language, Tang Yueshan couldn't even understand much of it and only knew a few words.

Thus, the persona of a mute servant was quite fitting for him.

There was already a line at the city gates, and among the people waiting, some were conscripts captured by the Jin army from the surrounding areas, while others were villagers who had come to sell vegetables and supplies to the army, all of whom would have to sell their hard-grown crops for a pittance.

Additionally, there were a few fearless wanderers from the martial world and some citizens returning to the city.

Tang Yueshan whispered, "Do you think the excuse about fleeing from another city is a bit far-fetched? Who would want to escape to the Jin army’s territory?"

"Traitors." Gu Jiao replied.

Uh... that works?

"I, I’m here to join the Jin army! My father is from the State of Yan, and my mother is from the State of Liang. Because the two countries are at war, they dragged my mother out and cruelly killed her! Now they want to kill me too! They say I’m the bastard child of the State of Liang! I won’t accept it! Why should I?!"

At the city gates, a young man about to enter broke down and cried uncontrollably.

Tang Yueshan twitched the corner of his mouth. There are actually people like this?

As it came to Gu Jiao and his turn, Gu Jiao’s purse suddenly fell.

She was about to dismount and pick it up when a fair, clean hand swiftly retrieved the purse and handed it to her.

"Little brother, you dropped your things."

It was a young man with delicate features.

Gu Jiao took the purse from him and said, "Thank you."

This purse was a birthday gift from Grandaunt before she left, and Gu Jiao had been carrying it with her ever since.

The young man smiled.

Among the ragged crowd of people entering the city, the young man’s clothing was so clean that it caught the eye and made him stand out.

Gu Jiao’s gaze followed him.

She saw him approach a carriage, and standing outside the window, he said to the person inside, "Young master, I couldn’t find the sugar-coated hawthorn you wanted. The old woman didn’t set up her stall today."

Ah.

This meant he had come for the sugar-coated hawthorn before.

Given the ongoing war, the old woman selling sugar-coated hawthorns was probably too afraid to come out, but his “Young Master” of his was so persistent that they came every day to wait for her.

The young servant climbed into the carriage.

The carriage slowly passed through the city gates.

These people had nothing to do with her, so Gu Jiao was about to look away when a gust of wind blew, lifting the curtain of the carriage window.

Gu Jiao caught a glimpse of the strikingly handsome face inside the carriage.

Her eyes widened in shock.

Husband?

No, Xiao Heng had gone to Cangxue Pass to the east, so it was impossible for him to be here.

Then, that person was——

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
