A complicated wave of emotion suddenly swept through Marquis Xuanping’s heart.
Empress Dowager Zhuang must have done it on purpose. She deliberately kept silent about Shangguan Yan coming here, deliberately catching him off guard.
What a ruthless Empress Dowager, truly settling the old score from their ordeal at sea!
Marquis Xuanping had never been one to care about saving face, but in this moment, even he found himself a little——
Never mind, now that she was here, it was a good opportunity for him to ask her why she had faked her death and fled all those years ago, and why she had taken his son with her!
“That...”
Shangguan Yan was the first to speak, but before she could finish her sentence, Tang Yueshan barged in like a storm.
He lifted the tent flap and burst into loud laughter, shouting, “Old Xiao! Let’s go do something exciting! We've been cooped up in this camp so long, moss is growing on my ass! Once we’re done, we can hit that place, what’s it called, the Windmoon Pavilion for a drink! Didn’t you say the girls there were gorgeous last time?”
Marquis Xuanping: Can you shut the hell up already?
As if remembering something, Tang Yueshan slung his great blade over his shoulder, and with great seriousness, he added, “But I just heard something. Your old flame is coming. You better make sure she doesn’t find out you’re out drinking with courtesans. Jealous women are terrifying! Don’t worry, I won’t tell a soul!”
Marquis Xuanping: Is there anything you haven’t already said?!
“And most importantly,” Tang Yueshan lowered his voice, “you’ve got to hide Chu Feipeng well. Don’t let your old flame find him. Others might be easy to brush off, but if she wants him, I fear you won’t be able to refuse.”
Marquis Xuanping, who had always been the one to sell others out, was now thoroughly sold out by Tang Yueshan, stripped bare, not even a pair of underwear left.
As the saying goes: what goes around comes around; heaven spares no one.
After finishing his speech, Tang Yueshan finally noticed that something was off with the atmosphere inside the tent. He glanced behind the curtain, only to see the Crown Princess herself standing there in her regal sapphire-blue robe.
Tang Yueshan froze on the spot for a full three seconds, then blurted out, “Seems like someone’s calling me. I’ll be going now!”
And with that, the esteemed Supreme Commander, having stirred a hornet’s nest, made a swift and decisive retreat from this massive social disaster scene!
The atmosphere in the tent became even stranger than before.
Shangguan Yan had originally wanted to offer a sincere apology for her sudden disappearance years ago, but her expression abruptly turned dangerous. “Do something exciting? Are you planning to rob the citizens of Great Yan? And visit the women of Great Yan for pleasure afterward? They say after three days apart, a man should be viewed with new eyes, and you, Xiao Ji, have really shown me something.”
Marquis Xuanping was utterly wronged.
Since arriving in Quyang, he hadn’t even mentioned robbing the city or anything like it. Visiting a brothel? That was absolute nonsense. As for saying something about the Windmoon Pavilion’s girls being gorgeous, he couldn’t even remember if he had said such a thing.
War was about life and death, fortune and calamity hanging by a thread. Who had the time or mind for such matters?
“Don’t listen to Old Tang.” Marquis Xuanping said wearily, rubbing his temples. “I never thought of doing any of that. It was all his idea.”
Shangguan Yan sneered, “Heh, go if you want, what does it have to do with me? You and I only ever had a son together. Don’t tell me you actually expect that I’ve been pining for you all these years?”
Marquis Xuanping: …That sounds suspiciously like my line.
As the Crown Princess, Shangguan Yan was never one to get caught up in the trivial entanglements of romance and sentiment. This whole business about the father of her child wanting to visit a brothel and the old flame getting jealous was simply not in her emotional vocabulary.
In her heart, her sons came first, and second only to that was the empire and its people.
Men were fleeting as clouds in the sky.
Shangguan Yan focused on the key point, furiously employing Grandaunt’s essence of palace intrigue: strike first like a true villain. She continued, “And what’s going on with Chu Feipeng? Judging by your companion’s words, it sounds like he’s not dead. Oh, Xiao Ji, Xiao Ji, I actually spent all these years thinking I owed you, and it turns out you were scheming against me from the very beginning.”
Marquis Xuanping clenched his jaw and held his forehead in frustration.
Tang Yueshan, why the hell didn’t this Marquis kill you back then?!
......
Gu Jiao had gone to the infirmary camp to visit Cheng Fugui and the others, offering a few words of encouragement to take care of their injuries properly. After that, she made her way to Mu Qingchen’s section of the camp.
However, Mu Qingchen wasn’t in his own tent.
According to the cavalrymen, he had gone to the outskirts of the camp to practice swordsmanship.
He had once been so disturbed by the act of taking a life for the first time that he clutched a tree trunk and dry-heaved from nausea.
Now, under that same tree, he was no longer plagued by guilt over killing, but instead was fully focused on how to kill more enemies with greater precision.
He thrust his sword again and again, practicing fatal strikes meant to land in a single, decisive blow.
His white robes could represent the gentle elegance of jade, or the sharp edge of death.
Gu Jiao did not disturb him, and after quietly watching for a while, she turned and left without a word.
The imperial court’s army was still inside the city and had yet to arrive at the camp, and since Shangguan Yan had not publicly revealed her identity, Gu Jiao was unaware that she had come.
As she passed by Tang Yueshan’s tent, she heard the faint rustling of activity inside. So late at night, what could Tang Yueshan possibly be doing?
Curious, she walked over, lifted the curtain, and peeked inside, only to see Tang Yueshan fumbling around, clearly in a panic as he tried to pack his belongings.
She made a small sound and asked, “Where are you going?”
He had only just arrived a few days ago, surely he wasn’t already leaving?
Tang Yueshan shoved a few jars of jinchuang medicine and some dried rations into his bundle. “I’m going to Pucheng to hide out with Old Gu for a few days.”
Gu Jiao tilted her head, eyeing him with suspicion. “Why are you hiding?”
Tang Yueshan was not the type to worry about pride and answered bluntly, “I sold out Old Xiao. If I don’t hide, he might really kill me.”
Gu Jiao: “...”
As he continued packing, Tang Yueshan relayed what had happened inside the tent, “...It wasn’t entirely my fault, alright. I didn’t know his old flame had come. I just figured since his old flame was the Crown Princess, her arrival at the camp would at least be announced somehow. Who would’ve thought she would immediately rush off to find him and even refuse to let anyone notify him? That’s practically a declaration of——”
He didn’t finish the rest.
Tang Yueshan might have no filter in front of Marquis Xuanping, but Gu Jiao was a proper young lady. He still had enough decency not to pollute her ears with indecent talk.
Gu Jiao simply said, “Oh, so the Crown Princess is here.”
That must mean the court’s main army had also entered the city by now.
As for why she hadn’t sent word ahead and had instead gone straight to see Marquis Xuanping, Gu Jiao didn’t think too much about it.
That was a matter between the two of them, and she had no intention of interfering.
Gu Jiao stroked her chin thoughtfully. “The army from the State of Liang is no longer a threat, and it’s unlikely they’ll launch a counterattack. The next step is to drive them completely out of Yanmen Pass and reclaim the new city occupied by the Nangong Family. For now, Quyang City is no longer in immediate danger. I’ll go with you to Pucheng.”
Tang Yueshan looked at her and asked, “You’re going too? You’re not staying here?”
Gu Jiao replied, “They don’t need me here for the time being.”
The Black Wind Cavalry had just come through a brutal battle and wouldn’t be engaging again in the near future.
Gu Jiao added, “The intelligence from Pucheng is important. It’s better to send more people.”
“Hmm.” On that point, Tang Yueshan completely agreed.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
