Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Chang Wei clasped his fists and said humbly, “Your Highness flatters me too much. In the battle at the North City Gate against the main force of the State of Liang, I was of little help and do not dare claim credit! Rather, it was the four experts Your Highness dispatched who performed outstandingly during the conflict, making it feel as if divine aid was upon us.”
Shangguan Yan was taken aback for a moment and replied, “I never dispatched any experts to Quyang.”
Now it was Chang Wei’s turn to be surprised. “They weren’t sent by Your Highness? But they claimed to be reinforcements from the imperial court and even had a handwritten letter from Your Highness as proof.”
With that, Chang Wei pulled a letter from within his robe, its surface warm from being close to his body, and held it above his head with both hands to present it to Shangguan Yan.
After handing it over, he suddenly felt that perhaps he had acted too rudely.
Shouldn’t something like this be handed to a palace maid? Wouldn’t something touched by a rough man like him defile the hands of the crown princess?
But… which one was the palace maid?
Huan’er stood beside the Crown Princess dressed like a young eunuch. It was no wonder he hadn’t recognized her.
Shangguan Yan took the letter personally.
Chang Wei secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
At the same time, he felt a tinge of nervous excitement. Shangguan Yan carried an incomparably noble imperial air, yet she never flaunted the airs of the imperial family, truly making her a warm and approachable future ruler.
After unsealing and reading the letter, Shangguan Yan’s expression turned perplexed.
The handwriting was indeed hers, without a doubt. But she had absolutely no memory of ever writing such a letter.
And it even bore her personal seal——
What in the world was going on?
“Oh, right, there’s also this. They said it was your token.” said Chang Wei as he pulled out a token from his robe, once again presenting it to the Crown Princess.
The moment Shangguan Yan took the token and looked at it, she instantly recognized it as the bank token she had given Xiao Heng before leaving. It was a pass to withdraw funds from the bank should he run short on travel money.
So that meant?
Was Ah Heng here?
Hadn’t Ah Heng gone to Cangxue Pass to resolve the disputes involving the State of Chen and the State of Qing? Could it be that he had changed his plans and come to Quyang to rendezvous with JiaoJiao instead?
That possibility wasn’t entirely out of the question.
Since Chang Wei hadn’t mentioned anything about the Eldest Imperial Grandson, it was likely that Ah Heng had arrived incognito.
That made sense. Being en route to Cangxue Pass, the Eldest Imperial Grandson certainly couldn’t publicly appear in Quyang.
But then, why was she still guessing here? Wouldn’t everything become clear once she saw Ah Heng in person?
Shangguan Yan, eager beyond words to see her son, could no longer wait to proceed with the army. She climbed into her carriage and said to Chang Wei, “Now I remember. It was indeed something I arranged. They’re my most trusted people. You lead the way; I wish to go to the camp and see them immediately!”
“Yes, Your Highness!”
Chang Wei mounted his horse in one swift motion.
Shangguan Yan pushed open the carriage window and called out to Wang Man, who was still in a daze, unable to recover from the shock of Chu Feipeng’s death. “Great General Wang, I entrust the army to you. Please lead the troops and rendezvous with me at the camp.”
“Yes.” Wang Man snapped out of his daze and responded with a cupped fist.
The carriage passed through the city gates and quickly disappeared into the night.
Inside, Shangguan Yan took a deep breath and clenched her fingers.
Faster, faster, faster still.
She was going to see her son. She could hardly wait another moment.
After having missed out on so many years in the past, she now cherished every single day that she could spend with her son as if it were the most precious treasure in the world.
The carriage came to a stop at the military camp.
“This subordinate shall…” Chang Wei began to speak.
“No need to announce me.” Shangguan Yan said as she stepped down from the carriage. She wanted to surprise her son. “Where are they staying?”
“They’re all staying near the young commander.” Chang Wei replied while leading the way ahead and pointing toward a cluster of tents in the center. “Those three over there; the one on the left houses two people, one of whom is strikingly handsome, and the other, an extremely formidable expert.”
Strikingly handsome? An extremely formidable expert?
Who else could that be but Ah Heng and Long Yi?
Inside the tent, an oil lamp burned quietly, and the fabric of the tent cast the silhouette of a man, seemingly engrossed in reading under the lamplight.
So studious, no doubt it was Ah Heng.
And the sharp outline of the nose bridge and brow bone; it could only belong to Ah Heng.
Shangguan Yan lifted the hem of her crown princess robe, unable to contain the excitement bubbling up inside her, and walked quickly toward the tent, lifting the curtain with one swift motion!
“So——”
She had barely stepped inside when her eyes fell on the man in the tent, and that half-uttered word “son” caught abruptly in her throat.
Shangguan Yan blinked, and her first reaction was to think she must have seen it wrong.
It was only after a moment that she confirmed what was in front of her eyes was indeed real.
She had absolutely not expected to see this man appear in the camp of the Black Wind Cavalry.
Her son suddenly turning into his father. This kind of shock was a bit too much to handle.
Marquis Xuanping’s reaction was hardly any better than Shangguan Yan’s; he too hadn’t anticipated that, after twenty years, he would once again lay eyes on the woman he had personally “buried” with his own hands.
——Especially since Empress Dowager Zhuang hadn’t breathed a word about this before he came.
There was no earth-shattering confrontation, no chaotic scene of shouting or fighting; their unexpected reunion was, surprisingly, extraordinarily calm.
Shangguan Yan stared at him blankly, momentarily forgetting how to speak.
Marquis Xuanping held the military deployment map in his hand, lips pressed into a tight line, clearly just as unprepared for what to say first.
There was no way they didn’t recognize each other. After all, they had lived together for a significant amount of time, and more importantly... they had once shared a child.
It was just that time had passed, and neither of them was who they had once been in their youth. He was no longer that reckless young man, though traces of his arrogance remained, now tempered by the calm restraint of a grown man.
She too was no longer that caged little slave girl who had struggled and resisted like a wild beast.
She now wore the dignified robe of the Crown Princess.
Yes, that was right. She was Ah Heng’s birth mother.
Ah Heng was the Eldest Imperial Grandson of Great Yan, so didn’t that make her the Crown Princess of Great Yan?
If he hadn’t experienced it himself, who could imagine that the little slave girl he had mistakenly redeemed from an underground martial arena was actually a fallen little phoenix?

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
