The spear thrust directly pierced through the carriage curtain and struck the man’s sleeve.

Did it wound him, or did it miss?

Gu Jiao furrowed her brows, but in the very next moment, a figure came barreling toward her from behind at an astonishing speed.

That speed was simply beyond belief, and Gu Jiao instinctively yanked out her red-tasseled spear and leapt forward.

The Black Wind King immediately rushed up in perfect coordination and caught her.

Mounted on horseback, Gu Jiao glanced down at the tip of her spear, gleaming coldly under the light. There was no blood. She hadn’t landed the blow after all?

So this was Chu Feipeng; his reputation clearly well deserved. No wonder he had managed to shoot and kill Jing Kong, who was already hailed as a young godly general.

“How dare you, brat! You actually tried to sneak attack my foster father!”

The speaker was the young swordsman who had nearly injured Gu Jiao just now.

His name was Zhao An, the adopted son of Chu Feipeng, and he had just turned twenty this year.

He sat proudly atop his warhorse, casting a dismissive glance at Gu Jiao and the Black Wind King, speaking with haughty arrogance, “I have no use for your spear, I only train with swords. But I rather like your horse. Once I kill you, that horse will be mine.”

A murderous aura surged violently from the Black Wind King!

Zhao An chuckled lightly and said, “I like that temper of yours!”

Gu Jiao replied calmly, “Liking it does you no good; it’s not yours anyway.”

Zhao An decided not to bother contesting the horse anymore. He suddenly leapt into the air, raised his treasured sword high, and lunged straight at Gu Jiao with a shout, “If I take it, it becomes mine! Brat! Watch my sword!”

Gu Jiao swept her spear in a wide arc, turning defense into offense as the weapon shot straight toward his waist and abdomen.

A flicker of alarm crossed Zhao An’s eyes. He quickly pulled back his lethal strike and twisted his body to evade Gu Jiao’s counterattack. He then raised his sword once more and slashed toward her head.

Since he intended to claim the Black Wind King for himself, he naturally avoided injuring the horse, so all his strikes were aimed solely at Gu Jiao’s upper body.

Gu Jiao couldn’t shake a strange sense of familiarity from his techniques. It felt as though she had seen them somewhere before.

It couldn’t be from that dream, could it?

No, in that dream, Zhao An hadn’t even gotten the chance to make a move.

The two of them clashed for several rounds. Zhao An’s martial skills were better than expected, but still not overly troublesome.

Gu Jiao suddenly leapt from the saddle, somersaulted in mid-air, and brought her red-tasseled spear down with fierce force upon Zhao An!

His prized sword was instantly cleaved into two pieces!

Zhao An stared at the broken blade in disbelief. “This… how could this be possible?”

After all, he was the youngest swordmaster in the State of Liang——

But Gu Jiao didn’t care whether he was a swordmaster or a scoundrel; she thrust her spear at him again, mercilessly and domineeringly.

From within the carriage, a dart was fired, striking the tip of Gu Jiao’s spear.

An overwhelming force coursed through it, forcing the spearhead aside. But it didn’t stop there, this internal force continued down the shaft of the spear and sent a shudder through Gu Jiao’s arms, leaving them slightly numb.

Her upper body could barely exert strength anymore, but if they thought this was enough to make her back down from Zhao An, that was laughably naive.

Gu Jiao glanced at the broken sword blade on the ground. She stepped down hard on it, flipping the blade upright, and with a deft flick of her foot, kicked it into the air. Then she raised her other foot and fiercely struck the blade again!

The blade shot toward Zhao An’s back like a streak of lightning!

A scream rang out. Zhao An was pierced by the sword fragment and toppled forward, collapsing before the carriage.

He coughed up blood, struggling to reach a trembling hand toward the carriage. “Foster father…”

From inside the carriage came a cool, dispassionate male voice, “Still not making your move? If we keep watching, this alliance will fall apart.”

Gu Jiao tightened her grip on the red-tasseled spear in her hand. Who was Chu Feipeng talking to?

Just as the thought crossed her mind, three figures shot out from the tent behind her.

That aura, that footwork…

An Hun?

No, that couldn’t be. An Hun had already been killed by Long Yi.

Besides, An Hun couldn’t possibly have split into three people.

That left only one explanation——

These three… were from the same sect as An Hun and Long Yi!

Gu Jiao finally realized why Zhao An’s swordsmanship had seemed so familiar. It wasn’t the way he wielded his sword, but rather the footwork he used during combat, which was almost identical in style to An Hun’s movements.

However, Zhao An was nowhere near as formidable as An Hun had been.

These three, on the other hand, were different. From the moment they appeared, Gu Jiao felt an intense pressure descend upon her, heavy and suffocating.

Back when she was in the State of Zhao, her benchmark for judging a true master had been the formidable Tian Lang; now, that benchmark had shifted to An Hun.

Each of these three figures possessed a level of strength that was near equal to An Hun’s. Though none of them could surpass him individually, if the three of them worked together, they could unleash a force even more powerful than An Hun himself.

The situation… had become significantly more complicated.

On the other side of the battlefield, the Black Wind Cavalry was also fighting with everything they had.

The war drums thundered, and the sounds of battle echoed to the skies, each clash ringing with desperate intensity.

The garrison troops atop the city walls could only watch helplessly as the Black Wind Cavalry shed blood to defend the people of Quyang City, unable to lift a finger to help.

These were dangers they, as defenders, should have borne themselves, yet now it was the Black Wind Cavalry taking on the full burden.

At first, many among the garrison had watched with a vengeful mindset, hoping that the Black Wind Cavalry would be worn down and sacrificed in their place. But as the battle wore on, every last one of them was moved.

Only those who had seen death up close could truly understand how lucky they were to still be alive.

The Black Wind Cavalry had once fought against them, had killed their comrades in past battles, and yet now, the Black Wind Cavalry had taken up arms in their place.

The ones now dying in rivers of blood were no longer their own, but those of the Black Wind Cavalry.

Another soldier of the Black Wind Cavalry fell beneath the encirclement of the State of Liang’s forces. One of the garrison soldiers stepped forward and slammed a fist into the city wall. “Damn it!”

He turned and shouted to the general beside him, “General Ji! Let us go down and fight!”

Another garrison soldier clenched his teeth and added, “Yes, General Ji! The State of Liang’s army has too many troops! If this keeps up, the Black Wind Cavalry won’t be able to hold out!”

General Ji gritted his teeth and responded with a stern tone, “All units, hold your positions!”

The entire garrison roared out in protest, “General!”

General Ji’s expression was filled with inner conflict as he said, “That is a military order!”

Did he not want to fight?

Did he not want to drive the dogs of the State of Liang out of Great Yan?

He wanted it more than anything, even in his dreams!

But they could not break formation recklessly; they had to preserve their strength. The moment their numbers dropped below a critical threshold, the Han Family and the armies of the State of Jin would immediately seize the opportunity to launch an assault on Quyang City.

It was not that they were afraid to die!

It was that they could not afford to die!

With wolves circling all around, they could not act on impulse, nor could they allow the sacrifice of the Black Wind Cavalry to be in vain!

Cheng Fugui had long been consumed by the frenzy of battle. His body was already covered in wounds, but he stubbornly refused to let himself fall.

The enemy assault was divided into four waves: left flank, right flank, center, and rear guard.

The first three waves were responsible for the fighting. Whenever a large number of Black Wind Cavalry troops fell, the rear guard would immediately surge forward to fill the gap.

Within the city’s main streets, the soldiers of the Reserve Battalion were slowly inching forward. That meant more and more of their comrades on the front lines had lost the ability to fight.

They longed to fight, yet at the same time, they didn’t want to be called up under such dire circumstances.

They watched their comrades leave the city whole and return drenched in blood, carried back by the medical officers; every eye was red with emotion.

The medical officers rushed about, transporting the wounded back to the nearby tents as fast as they could.

The lead medic shouted, “There are more injured, get more hands! You two, stay back this time!”

Among the six states, there were two unspoken rules in warfare: first, do not execute envoys, and second, do not harm medical officers.

Even so, accidental injuries to medics were still all too common on the battlefield. The two medics who had suffered minor cuts to their arms spoke up in unison, “We’re fine!”

Indeed, their wounds were only superficial. Given the current shortage of manpower, the lead medic had no choice but to allow them to continue running back and forth across the front lines.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
