Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
After Gu Jiao had her meal, she made her way to the infirmary camp.
Due to the unusual nature of Chang Wei’s case and the potential for violent retaliation, he had been placed in a separate ward under the guard of two Black Wind cavalrymen.
When Gu Jiao entered, one of the medical officer’s attendants was trying to feed him porridge.
He turned his head away in refusal, leaving the attendant in a difficult spot.
“You may leave.” Gu Jiao said calmly.
“Yes.” The attendant replied, setting down the bowl of porridge and withdrawing from the tent.
Gu Jiao approached the bedside, her gaze resting coolly on Chang Wei. “You woke up rather quickly.”
Chang Wei turned his head toward her, his eyes cold and guarded, and from his pale lips came a weak but defiant voice, “Kill me, torture me, do as you please. But anything else, don’t even think about it.”
With both hands clasped behind her back, Gu Jiao raised a brow slightly and said, “I’m curious. Why are you so loyal to the Nangong Family? They’re rebels against the imperial court. Does that not concern you in the slightest?”
Chang Wei replied coldly, “Spare me your baseless accusations. Who the real rebels are is still up for debate. If the Emperor is unjust, then we are under no obligation to serve him.”
Ah, Emperor, oh Emperor… look at the mess you’ve created.
Gu Jiao said, “Even if the Emperor is indeed unjust, does that automatically make the Nangong Family righteous? How much do you actually know about what happened when they framed the Xuanyuan Family back then? Yes, the Emperor did harbor murderous intent toward the Xuanyuan Family. He turned on them like one discards a used donkey after it’s done grinding, so perhaps he’s not worth your loyalty. But do you really think the Nangong Family are any better? If they hadn’t colluded with the Han Family to betray the Xuanyuans, do you think the imperial court’s limited forces would’ve had the power to wipe out the entire Xuanyuan lineage?”
Chang Wei sneered. “You think I’ll believe your nonsense just because you speak with such conviction?”
Gu Jiao continued, “I’ll ask you just one question. If the Nangong Family were found to have colluded with foreign enemies, would you still choose to follow them?”
Chang Wei turned his head aside. “That’s none of your business.”
It was an evasive answer.
Clearly, Chang Wei’s loyalty to the Nangong Family wasn’t just due to their having once recognized his worth; part of it was fueled by resentment toward the Emperor’s cruelty and injustice.
But it didn’t seem like he was planning to commit treason by colluding with enemy states.
He also appeared unaware that the Nangong Family had intentions of forming an alliance with the State of Liang.
At this point, there was no time to go digging for proof.
She had only three days to convince Chang Wei to believe her.
If, after three days, Chang Wei still firmly refused to fight alongside her against the enemy, then there was a high chance that Quyang City would fall.
……
In the southern region of the State of Yan.
In order to reach Chishui Pass as quickly as possible, Duke An and Grandaunt’s party chose to travel by water after leaving Hu City.
Wang Xu accompanied them on the journey, and they boarded a naval warship at the government port.
If all went smoothly, they were expected to arrive at Chishui Pass within five days.
However, Grandaunt was clearly dissatisfied with this timeline.
She was terribly worried about JiaoJiao.
All alone on the border, who knew how much hardship she was enduring, how many battles she was fighting, how much blood she was shedding, how many injuries she had sustained!
“Is there a shortcut?” She asked.
Old Chief repeated the question in the local dialect of the State of Yan.
Wang Xu already knew that these people were honored guests of the Duke An Estate, so he respectfully cupped his hands and replied, “There is, but it’s a bit risky. That route doesn’t fall within the maritime territory of the State of Yan, and we almost never travel that way.”
Grandaunt shot Old Chief a look, and he immediately understood.
He continued to question Wang Xu in the local dialect, “How much faster would it be to take that route?”
“We could reach our destination in two days.” Wang Xu replied.
“Then that’s the route we’ll take!” Grandaunt made the decision without hesitation.
Wang Xu looked over at Duke An across from him.
Duke An wrote down a single word: ‘Agreed.’
He shared the same concern for Gu Jiao as Grandaunt did.
Three days might mean little in a time of peace, but in a war-torn borderland, it could mean tens of thousands of lives hanging in the balance.
As an imperial envoy, Duke An’s word was law, and Wang Xu had no choice but to comply when it came to major decisions.
Reluctantly and with clear discontent, he said, “But if anything happens along the way, don’t come crying to me.”
Wang Xu’s ominous prediction came true that very afternoon.
On the day they took the shortcut, their three warships were surrounded by a band of pirates.
These pirates were all tall, broad-shouldered men, incredibly fierce and valiant in combat. The soldiers on the warships stood no chance against their sheer strength and brutality.
Eventually, the pirates broke through the warships’ defenses and boarded the vessel carrying Duke An and his entourage.
Their leader raised his curved blade high and shouted, “Brothers! Go! Slaughter all the men! Seize all the women! Capture every last child!”
This man stood seven feet tall, his frame was burly and commanding, and he wore a small cloth patch over his right eye.
Everyone immediately thought of the infamous pirate known as the One-Eyed Dragon.
He did not engage in combat himself. Instead, one of his subordinates, a younger pirate, sprang into action.
This one moved with astonishing speed, his martial skill terrifyingly high.
With a single punch, he knocked down two or three people, and in mere moments, every guard on the deck had been thrown into the sea by the young pirate.
Wang Xu drew his long sword and slashed at the young pirate’s back.
But before the blade could even graze him, the young pirate spun around and stomped down with incredible force, pinning Wang Xu beneath his foot.
Wang Xu sprawled across the deck, coughing up blood and groaning, “...Even pirates have martial arts this advanced now?”
The young pirate had effortlessly taken out all the guards.
The pirate leader curled his lips into a smug smile and swaggered over to Wang Xu, speaking in halting State of Yan language, “Robbery. Gold. Hand it over.”
The young pirate stepped on Wang Xu’s face with a blank expression.
Gritting his teeth, Wang Xu choked out, “I... would rather die... than give it up...”
“Tough talk.” The pirate leader sneered. Then he pointed arrogantly toward the private cabin where Grandaunt and the others were, and declared, “In that case, I’ll just kill every last one of them!”
Just as he finished speaking——
A small, round head popped out from the cabin.
The child looked up at the pirate leader, blinked his large eyes, and cheerfully chirped, “Little Chicken Monkey!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
