Gu Jiao was utterly exhausted.

As she drifted off in thought, her eyelids grew heavy, and before she knew it, she had dozed off, slumped over the small desk in front of her.

To keep the air circulating, the flap of her tent had been left open, and two cavalrymen were stationed outside to stand guard.

A cavalryman from the vanguard unit happened to pass by and casually glanced inside. What he saw made him stop dead in his tracks.

Soon after, a second one joined him, then a third, then a fourth...

Without Gu Jiao having the slightest idea, a crowd of curious heads began to gather at her tent’s entrance.

"The young commander is drooling..."

"The young commander is frowning..."

"He even scrunched up his nose..."

"Keep it down, will you..."

Gu Jiao lay sprawled on the desk, her tender, youthful cheeks squished into soft little mounds, her small mouth slightly open, drooling a shimmering puddle all over the tabletop.

After spending so many days diligently studying Wang Man and finally managing to capture the essence of his commanding demeanor, Gu Jiao remained completely unaware that her grand image as a stern official had just collapsed entirely in a single afternoon nap.

"Hey, hey, hey! Don’t push! I can’t see anymore..." one cavalryman grumbled as he was nearly shoved out of the way.

More and more people were joining the crowd.

Everyone wanted to watch the young commander sleep.

It was bizarre, really.

They were all grown men——so why on earth were they so fascinated by watching another grown man?

To be honest, Mu Qingchen was the more classically handsome one among them. He was elegant and striking, as befitting the number one Young Master of Shengdu.

And yet, none of them ever stared at Mu Qingchen like this.

"What’s going on? What happened?"

Advisor Hu, just returning from the kitchen, was startled to see the entrance so tightly packed, layer upon layer with people. For a second, he thought something serious had happened inside the commander's tent.

He raised his voice to ask.

But no one answered him.

He poked the cavalryman standing at the very back. “Hey, what’s going on?”

Without even turning around, the cavalryman swatted his hand away and snapped, “Don’t bother me! Go away!”

Advisor Hu’s eyes went wide, and he drew in a sharp breath.

What did that brat just say? Go away? Me?

He was no longer that nobody, ignored, benchwarmer advisor anymore!

He was now a trusted aide to Commander Xiao himself! He had followed the Commander across mountains and seas, and fought battles on every front!

His status was important now!

Fuming, Advisor Hu raised his hand, jumped up, and gave the cavalryman a good slap on the back of the head. “Insolence!”

The cavalryman turned around instantly, and upon seeing who it was, his neck shrank in alarm. He quickly pinched his companion’s rear end.

The companion slapped his hand away. “What the hell? I’m watching the young commander!”

"Ahem!" He cleared his throat with a deliberate, weighty cough.

All the cavalrymen simultaneously turned their heads around, glaring in unison, and hissed in chorus, “Shut up!”

Don’t wake the young commander!

Then, they finally saw the stormy expression on Advisor Hu’s face.

Everyone froze awkwardly for three seconds, and then scattered like frightened birds!

Advisor Hu didn’t manage to catch a single one. Grinding his teeth, he muttered furiously, “A bunch of little brats!”

He stormed into the tent in a huff.

But the moment he laid eyes on Gu Jiao, still sleeping with her face pressed against the desk, he couldn’t help but clutch his chest.

Seriously?

The young commander was really...

Just too adorable!

Gu Jiao slept straight through until the afternoon.

Advisor Hu had drawn the tent flap down, just in case that group of rascals came back and caught another glimpse of the young commander’s soft, squishy face.

When Gu Jiao finally woke up, she calmly wiped the corner of her mouth, as if absolutely nothing had happened.

I’m not embarrassed, let others be.

Advisor Hu gave an awkward smile and said, “My Lord, it’s still early. Why don’t you rest a little longer?”

“No need.” Gu Jiao replied, rubbing the soreness out of her neck. “What’s the situation in the city?”

“All is well, you need not worry.” Advisor Hu assured her promptly.

Something came to Gu Jiao’s mind, and she asked, “Quyang City has a City Lord, doesn’t it?”

Advisor Hu had long since gathered all the relevant information and replied, “The former City Lord was from the Nangong Family. After the head of the Nangong Family arrived, he simply assumed the position for himself, and when he left, he took the previous City Lord with him.”

Gu Jiao let out a soft hum of acknowledgement. “We’ll need to find a new City Lord to restore order within the city.”

Advisor Hu quickly said, “I’ll keep an eye out. Ah, right. While you were resting just now, a medical officer from the infirmary camp came by to report that Chang Wei has regained consciousness.”

Gu Jiao raised her brows in surprise. “Hmm, that was quick. His vitality is impressive. I’ll go take a look.”

As she stood up, Advisor Hu couldn’t hold back and blurted out, “Eat something first!”

It was the exact tone a family elder would use when scolding his own child!

Already halfway up, Gu Jiao gave him a peculiar glance.

Advisor Hu suddenly realized what he had just said in his anxious rush, and a shiver ran through him. Lowering his head, he stammered, “What I meant was... My Lord hasn’t eaten all day, and there’s no urgency in seeing Chang Wei right away. He won’t be dying anytime soon, so, My Lord, perhaps you should eat first...”

Please don’t punish me, please don’t punish me. I’ve just managed to make something of myself. I can’t be sent back to the cold bench again...

“Oh. Alright.”

Gu Jiao sat back down on the mat.

Advisor Hu, clutching his chest and still reeling from the scare, felt as if he had narrowly escaped death...

Gu Jiao’s meal was very simple: two steamed buns and a small dish of pickled vegetables.

Today, the reserve camp had slaughtered a pig to make braised pork with cabbage for the soldiers, and Advisor Hu had saved a bowl for Gu Jiao as well.

Battles drained one’s strength and increased appetite.

Gu Jiao devoured everything on the table with the speed and ferocity of a whirlwind, leaving nothing behind, to the point that Advisor Hu stood there watching in stunned silence.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
