Gu Jiao rode at the very front of the procession. Though she had donned her helmet, she hadn’t lowered the visor, and so her youthful, tender face was fully visible, as was the birthmark on her left cheek.

The townspeople were utterly terrified.

The Black Wind King was already a warhorse that exuded dominance, with an aura warning all not to approach.

Now pair that with a person of strange and intimidating appearance, mounted atop such a beast, and it was enough to frighten a child into tears on the spot.

A mother hurriedly covered her child’s mouth, terrified that that young god of killing might take offense and slay her son in a fit of displeasure.

Gu Jiao paid no mind and continued riding forward on the Black Wind King.

Bang!

Someone shut their window with a thud.

Bang!

And someone else slammed their front door closed!

It was as if the citizens on the streets had suddenly come to their senses, clutching their children and pushing carts, they scattered like birds and beasts, and in the blink of an eye, the once-bustling street was completely deserted.

Advisor Hu, riding behind Gu Jiao, opened his mouth and remarked, “My Lord, it seems we’re… not exactly being welcomed with open arms. We’re the ones who just purged the rebels and saved the people of Quyang from disaster, so shouldn’t they be lining the streets to greet us instead?”

Gu Jiao replied with calm indifference, “In their eyes, we’re the ones who are the rebels.”

Advisor Hu: “Uh…”

Nearby, a child just over a year old had been placed in a basket beside a vegetable stall. The basket had tipped over without the adult noticing, but the little one didn’t cry.

Using hands and feet, the baby crawled out of the basket and made his way toward the main road.

Cheng Fugui, who was marching at the outermost edge of the front ranks, noticed and quickly dismounted to scoop the child into his arms.

Cheng Fugui’s appearance wasn’t especially fierce by nature, but after going through a battle, his bruised and battered face looked both bloodied and rough and he did appear rather intimidating.

The little one burst into tears with a wail, stretching his hands out toward his nearby parents.

The parents, stricken with fear, immediately darted into a nearby house and slammed the door shut without a word!

Cheng Fugui was completely baffled, “Wait, what? You don’t want your kid anymore?”

The little one continued crying at the top of his lungs with gut-wrenching, soul-shaking sobs, and even managed to reach out his tiny, chubby hand to grab and tug at Cheng Fugui’s ear.

Cheng Fugui cried out in pain as the little one tugged mercilessly at his ear, howling, “Ow ow ow! That hurts, that hurts!”

Eventually, it was Mu Qingchen who rode over on horseback, dismounted, and came to stand beside Cheng Fugui, calmly extending his arms, “Give him to me.”

The moment the little fellow was transferred into his arms, he stopped crying altogether and became extraordinarily well-behaved, his chubby little hands no longer restless.

No wonder even the Little County Princess could be coaxed into silence by this handsome uncle.

Holding the child gently, Mu Qingchen walked over and gave a light knock on the door.

From the narrow crack in the door, the couple peeked outside. Had it been Cheng Fugui standing there, they would have certainly been too terrified to open it. However, Mu Qingchen didn’t carry the same air of bloodshed. Despite the armor he wore, his every movement still exuded the refined grace and noble demeanor of an elegant young master.

Gathering their courage, the couple finally opened the door.

Mu Qingchen returned their child to them.

“Be more careful in the future.” He reminded them kindly.

The husband and wife stared dazedly at the strikingly handsome young master before them. “Ah, y-yes…”

Mu Qingchen turned and walked away, returning to the formation alongside Cheng Fugui.

Looking down at their unharmed child, the couple still found it hard to believe what had just happened.

……

The news that Quyang City had been retaken soon spread across a hundred miles and reached the distant border stronghold of Tianshan Pass.

In the City Lord’s residence of Linfeng, Old Master Han gathered together with all his sons and grandsons. After hearing the scout’s report, a heavy atmosphere settled over the reception hall.

Han Lei, Old Master Han’s eldest son and the father of Han Ye, sighed and said, “I didn’t expect the imperial army to arrive this quickly.”

Fifth Master Han, his hair already silver, sat across from Han Lei and replied, “It wasn’t the main force. Only the Black Wind Cavalry arrived.”

Han Lei shot his younger brother a glance and said, “That’s what I meant. Black Wind Cavalry is part of the imperial army too.”

The Han Family wasn’t usually this tense, but with the onset of war, everyone was on edge, and emotions ran higher than usual.

Fifth Master Han wasn’t bothered by his elder brother’s tone. He simply said mildly, “Of the fifty thousand Black Wind Cavalry, fewer than twenty thousand were actual combat-ready riders. And yet, even with such a force, they still managed to capture Quyang City, which was guarded by eighty thousand troops.”

Han Lei retorted coldly, “That was Xiao Liulang using trickery!”

Fifth Master Han replied, “All’s fair in war. Even Chang Wei fell for it. How much of a chance do we Han Family really have?”

Han Lei frowned and said, “Fifth brother, you’re being far too quick to praise others and belittle your own!”

Fifth Master Han said calmly, “If it had been you instead, could you have led the Black Wind Cavalry to defeat Chang Wei’s force of eighty thousand?”

Han Lei choked on his words.

After a long moment, he muttered, “That’s only because the Black Wind Cavalry are formidable… he just happened to benefit from their strength. And need I remind you, the Black Wind Cavalry were originally trained by our Han Family! The imperial court is shameless, taking our troops and killing our men!”

Fifth Master Han responded evenly, “Have you forgotten, eldest brother? We ourselves took them from the Xuanyuan Family once.”

Third Master Han, a complete scoundrel with no military acumen, looked from one brother to the other, clearly unsure whose side he ought to take.

Old Master Han thumped his cane on the ground. “Enough! You two, stop arguing! Just one Xiao Liulang is enough to throw you both into chaos? How very impressive for the Han Family! The Black Wind Cavalry is the most powerful force in Great Yan, and they were never going to be easy to deal with. Besides, the Nangong Family underestimated their enemy, which is exactly why they fell for Xiao Liulang’s tactics! That boy does have some skill, but he lacks sufficient forces. Holding Quyang City won’t be easy. The imperial army won’t arrive for another ten days, but the State of Liang’s forces will breach Yanmen Pass in just three. Their commander this time is Chu Feipeng, a general of legendary skill, once mentioned in the same breath as Xuanyuan Sheng. Xiao Liulang will be crushed by him soon enough!”

……

After the Black Wind Cavalry took over Quyang City, Gu Jiao did not move into the City Lord’s residence. Instead, she chose to stay with her soldiers in the military camp.

Mu Qingchen was dispatched by her to play the role of “friend of the people,” tasked with educating the common folk and spreading awareness that the Black Wind Cavalry was a righteous army fighting for justice.

Inside her command tent, Gu Jiao sat studying a sand table dotted with small wooden pieces, each representing a thousand troops, strategically arranged across the city’s key fortresses.

“It’s still not quite enough.” She murmured to herself.

She rubbed her chin thoughtfully.

Once the State of Liang launched its assault, even one or two divisions of cavalry wouldn’t be enough to hold them off.

The State of Liang, after all, had a highly developed manufacturing industry. Their siege weapons were three times as powerful as those of the State of Yan, and their ladder systems used pulleys to hoist troops directly over the walls, rendering arrows practically useless against them.

Cavalry forces were best suited for attacking cities, rarely were they used to defend one.

If the battle against the Nangong Family’s eighty thousand troops had allowed the Black Wind Cavalry to play to all its strengths, then the upcoming siege by the State of Liang’s main army would be the exact opposite. It would be a battle fought on unfamiliar ground.

This next fight would be a far harder and grittier one.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
