This cry of “Little Chicken Monkey” was like a demonic sound from beyond the heavens, making the burly, one-eyed pirate leader’s body jolt in shock.

No way.

How could it be that brat?

And even after he had fully disguised himself like this, how on earth had he still been recognized?

"You've got the wrong person!" The one-eyed pirate leader denied flatly, refusing to admit anything. He turned around and strode swiftly toward the railing, determined to disembark from the ship at once.

If news got out that he had accidentally tried to rob his own family, and his son heard about it, his son would be furious!

He crooked his finger at the younger pirate and barked, “Retreat!”

Little Jing Kong came trotting out with quick little steps. “Huh? Little Chicken Monkey, why are you leaving?”

The one-eyed pirate leader quickened his pace, following the principle, ‘as long as you don’t get caught, nothing can be pinned on you,’ and marched resolutely forward.

But just then, a few marbles fell from the younger pirate’s pouch, clicking and bouncing right at his feet.

He stepped right onto them and went sprawling, face-first, into a spectacular belly flop!

My back—!

Chang Jing, can you go a single day without screwing over your master?!

Chang Jing shot Marquis Xuanping a look of pure disdain, bent down to pick up the marbles from the deck, then nonchalantly wiped them off on Marquis Xuanping’s pant leg before tucking the now-clean marbles back into his embroidered pouch.

“Big Brother Chang Jing!” Little Jing Kong ran up to Chang Jing, tilting his small head up and holding out his little fists. “Long time no see!”

“Yes, Jing Kong. Long time no see.” Chang Jing nodded, reaching out to bump fists with him in greeting.

Wang Xu looked on, completely baffled.

What was going on?

You guys knew each other?

And what language were they speaking? Why couldn’t he understand a word?

Little Jing Kong was just your average language prodigy, effortlessly switching into the local language of the State of Zhao, which of course Wang Xu couldn’t understand at all.

But several people inside the cabin understood perfectly well.

Old Chief came out with a grim expression. “Marquis Xuanping, you’ve got some nerve! Giving up your perfectly good marquis title to come play pirate at sea?”

And even saying things like “Slaughter all the men! Seize all the women! Capture every last child!”

Just listen to that. Just listen. Were those the words a Marquis of a nation should even be capable of saying? This was full-on pirate behavior, no two ways about it!

So this was what you brought back from your campaign against the sea bandits last year?

Didn’t bother to learn anything good and just picked up the worst of their lingo and attitude with flair?

Marquis Xuanping had calmed down by now. He climbed unhurriedly to his feet, dusted off his sleeves with noble poise, and gave a slight smile. “Chief Huo, long time no see. I trust you’ve been well. I was merely——”

Old Chief cut him off, finishing the sentence himself, “Merely pretending to be a pirate in order to test our naval strength. But from the looks of it, that strength is pretty lacking, so it seems this Marquis will have to personally escort you, old friend.”

Marquis Xuanping’s mouth twitched.

Of course, this guy writes storybooks; or else, how did he manage to guess those lines so flawlessly?

Marquis Xuanping hurriedly changed the subject. “Back to the point. Why are you on a ship belonging to the State of Yan? You’re an Academy Chief of the State of Zhao, showing up here with officials from the State of Yan doesn’t seem quite proper, does it?”

“Heh.” Skilled in the art of flipping blame. Too bad for Marquis Xuanping, this time his opponent wasn’t him!

Old Chief stepped aside.

From within the cabin, Empress Dowager Zhuang stepped out, radiating an aura of authority without a trace of anger.

Marquis Xuanping’s gaze flickered, and he looked back and forth between Old Chief and the Empress Dowager. “No way… You two… eloped?!”

Old Chief immediately bristled. “It’s not what you think!”

Marquis Xuanping gave him a strange look. “If it’s not, then it’s not, why are you getting so worked up?”

Old Chief raised his hand and straightened his collar. “I—I… Am I that worked up? That’s only because you’ve tarnished the Empress Dowager’s reputation!”

Marquis Xuanping narrowed his eyes. “Granduncle?”

Old Chief responded in a heartbeat. “What?”

Marquis Xuanping: "Hehe."

Wang Xu, unable to understand the State of Zhao’s language, watched them go back and forth in conversation, completely clueless about what was being said.

Empress Dowager Zhuang cast a deep, heavy glance at Marquis Xuanping and said, “You, come with Aijia.”

Marquis Xuanping followed Empress Dowager Zhuang into the cabin without a word.

Wang Xu propped himself up from the deck, casting a glance at the young pirate with extraordinary martial skills, then another at the larger pirate who seemed to obey the elderly woman’s every word. He felt a sharp pang in his chest.

What kind of people were these?

If he had known, he would never have traded assignments with that Feng Family boy. It would’ve been far better to accompany the Eldest Imperial Grandson to the State of Chen.

Chang Jing and Little Jing Kong stayed out on the deck playing marbles, while Marquis Xuanping followed Empress Dowager Zhuang into the meeting cabin.

Inside, there were two familiar faces——Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun.

Lady Nan and Master Lu had stayed behind in Shengdu to handle some private affairs and hadn’t returned with them.

There was also a stranger in the room, a man seated in a wheelchair.

Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun said nothing.

They knew Duke An was fluent in the languages of all six states; no matter what they said, it would give something away, so they opted not to greet Marquis Xuanping and instead stared at him with their eyes.

Empress Dowager Zhuang spoke in a calm tone, “We’re all on the same side here, no need to be overly formal. This is Marquis Xuanping of the State of Zhao.”

She made the introduction to Duke An, then turned to Marquis Xuanping and added, “This is Duke An of the State of Yan, JiaoJiao’s adoptive father.”

His daughter-in-law had an adoptive father in the State of Yan?

Marquis Xuanping instantly became courteous, smiling politely as he said, “So it’s Duke An. I’ve long heard of your name, truly honored.”

Duke An dipped his fingers in water and wrote on the armrest in the script of the State of Zhao, “Marquis Xuanping, I’ve also heard a lot about you.”

It was true. Twenty years ago, this man had ranked on the Beauty List of the Six States. Who in the world hadn’t heard of him?

“You can even write upside down.” Marquis Xuanping said, full of admiration.

“Take a seat.” Empress Dowager Zhuang said.

Marquis Xuanping took his seat and glanced at Gu Xiaoshun. “You’ve grown taller.”

Then he looked at Gu Yan. “Your health’s improved?”

His entire energy and presence had changed.

Gu Yan answered with pride, “Yes, I’m all better now. My sister cured me!”

Marquis Xuanping gave a nod of approval. “My daughter-in-law is impressive.”

Don’t be so quick to call her that. She’s not your daughter-in-law yet.

If the occasion weren’t so serious, Duke An would have written that exact line right on the armrest.

But priorities had to be set straight. This wasn’t the time to dwell on young people’s love affairs. Gu Jiao’s fate was what truly mattered now.

The purpose of Duke An’s eastern expedition was to negotiate peace with the State of Zhao, and meeting a high-ranking commander from the State of Zhao ahead of schedule was a rare and valuable opportunity.

“I’m sure by now, you’ve guessed my identity.” Empress Dowager Zhuang said to Duke An.

Duke An glanced at Marquis Xuanping, then dipped his fingers in water and wrote on the armrest, “State of Zhao, Empress Dowager Zhuang.”

He had suspected as much along the journey, but the confirmation had come just now.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
