Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Nangong Ze immediately shouted, “Xiao Liulang! What kind of trick are you playing this time? Do you think capturing me will force my father to surrender to you? I’m warning you—give up on that delusion! My father would never bow down to you for my sake!”

Gu Jiao turned to Advisor Hu, who had followed her out, and instructed, “Make sure to add more water and let it simmer over low heat.”

Advisor Hu nodded repeatedly. “Yes, I’ve got it.”

“Zhang Shiyong!” Gu Jiao then called out to the deputy commander of the reserve battalion, who was carrying a freshly hunted prey. “There are several baskets of herbs that won’t dry in time; find some people to roast them over a fire.”

“Yes.” Zhang Shiyong responded at once.

Gu Jiao continued issuing orders to several other people.

By the time she was done, Nangong Ze’s face had already darkened with anger. Only then did she walk over unhurriedly.

She held her helmet and looked down at the disheveled Nangong Ze from above, giving him a quick glance before asking, “What is it?”

Nangong Ze despised this feeling of looking up at someone, yet if he refused to look at her, it would seem as if he feared her.

He lifted his gaze and said coldly, “You won’t succeed! My father will never exchange the entire city of Quyang for me!”

Gu Jiao responded indifferently, “Oh.”

Her calm reaction only fueled Nangong Ze’s anger further.

This was just a brat who still smelled of milk, yet no matter what he did, he always maintained that infuriatingly composed demeanor.

Grinding his teeth, he threatened, “And another thing, you won’t succeed! You only have twenty thousand cavalrymen, while my Nangong Family commands an army of eighty thousand! Your petty tricks are laughable before an army of such magnitude! Xiao Liulang, you still have time to regret this! Send me back obediently, kowtow three times to my father, and pledge allegiance to my Nangong Family—perhaps you might just keep your life!”

“Finished talking?” Gu Jiao tilted her head slightly, her fearless eyes staring at him. “Not much of a speaker, are you?”

With that, she walked away, looking rather unimpressed.

The army set off in full gear, with the military medics carrying herbs and medicine chests as they followed along.

During battle, injuries were inevitable, making the presence of medical officers essential.

In an instant, most of the vast camp emptied, leaving behind only the reserve soldiers and the wounded who had been transported back from the front lines earlier in the afternoon.

Nangong Ze withdrew his gaze after surveying his surroundings, his brows furrowing in confusion.

Xiao Liulang had really left—he hadn’t taken him along.

This was too strange.

If he were Xiao Liulang, what would he do in this situation? He would use himself, the legitimate heir of the Nangong Family, as a shield to make the Nangong Army hesitate in their attacks.

“Unless… he plans to use me as his final bargaining chip in case he loses the battle?” Nangong Ze’s expression turned grim. “No! I can’t let Xiao Liulang succeed! I must escape!”

The sky grew darker and darker until night completely swallowed the land.

Atop the peaks flanking the canyon, the Black Wind Cavalry lay in ambush, their figures blending seamlessly into the night.

On the eastern peak, Li Jin crouched behind a rock, keeping a close eye on the movements below the canyon, while on the western peak, Tong Zhong remained equally vigilant.

Behind the two men, their respective cavalry units had taken their positions, each soldier on high alert, prepared to engage the Nangong rebels at any moment.

Li Jin pressed his ear against the ground. Suddenly, he felt the vibrations along the slope of the mountain.

Someone was coming!

To be precise, an entire battalion was approaching!

Li Jin mimicked the call of a cuckoo bird, and Tong Zhong responded with two cuckoo calls in return.

With this mutual signal, both men raised their right hands simultaneously.

The sound of galloping hooves drew closer and closer, accompanied by the clanking of armor as metal scraped and collided.

In the stillness of the mountains, these sounds carried an ominous air of impending battle.

The moonlight was particularly bright tonight.

The cold gleam of armor flickered, and the deep, resonant sound of hooves echoed through the canyon.

They were near the canyon now.

Ten zhang… seven zhang… five zhang…

Li Jin suddenly dropped his hand. “Release!”

The twenty-odd cavalrymen behind him thrust their wooden levers, dislodging massive boulders one after another.

With thunderous roars, the boulders tumbled down the jagged mountainside, shaking the earth as they crashed into the Nangong rebels flooding into the canyon.

The force of the impact sent the soldiers flying, instantly throwing their formation into chaos.

Screams of agony filled the air.

Tong Zhong, not to be outdone, decisively ignited the trenches behind him. “Fire the arrows!”

The Black Wind Cavalry had the highest standards for its soldiers, training them rigorously across all forms of combat. They excelled not only in cavalry warfare but also in infantry skirmishes and archery formations.

Their arrows were coated with fire oil, and once ignited by the raging flames in the trenches, they streaked through the night sky like a fiery downpour, raining destruction upon the rebels in the canyon.

The rebels stood little chance of counterattacking—rows upon rows of them collapsed under the relentless assault.

The deputy general was utterly stunned.

Even though he had known they were marching to their deaths, he had not expected it to happen so quickly!

Whoosh!

An arrow shot toward him with alarming speed. The deputy general instinctively leaned back just in time, and the arrow whizzed past, grazing the tip of his nose.

The lingering heat of the fire oil clung to his skin, sending a shiver down his spine.

But… they could not retreat!

Clenching the reins tightly, he drew the sword at his waist and bellowed, “Charge! Kill them all!”

The terrain atop the mountain peaks was too limited; there was no way the entire Black Wind Cavalry could be hiding up there in ambush.

Their main forces had to be waiting at the front of the canyon. If they could just break through, they would be able to engage them directly!

More boulders and logs continued to roll down from the peaks, while fiery arrows turned the entire canyon into an inferno.

By the time the Nangong rebels managed to push through, they had already lost more than half their forces.

The deputy general’s heart ached.

Even if they were meant to be cannon fodder, they had not expected to lose so many men so quickly!

Fortunately, they had finally made it through the canyon. Now that the battle had entered close combat, the ambush from the mountain peaks would have to cease to prevent friendly fire.

On the other side of the canyon, Cheng Fugui saw the Nangong rebels breaking through. He yanked off the gauze sling supporting his arm, tightened his grip on the reins, and unsheathed his longsword. “Brothers, charge! Kill them all!”

Like a surging tide, the Black Wind Cavalry thundered forward, their killing intent rising like a storm as they charged at the Nangong rebels.

Horses were naturally timid creatures, easily startled. Training a horse into a proper war steed was already an arduous task, and forging them into Black Wind Cavalry mounts was something no family besides the Xuanyuan Family had ever achieved.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
