As someone who had been marching with the troops, the medical officer had seen firsthand how Gu Jiao had been treated in the Black Wind Army these past days.

So young, yet shouldering such heavy responsibilities, and still having to endure the exclusion from a group of grown men.

But, to be fair, the cavalrymen weren’t entirely at fault.

The former commanders from the Han Family had thoroughly chilled everyone’s hearts.

However, this newly appointed young commander was different from the Han Family.

The medical officer explained, "We were lacking in knowledge when it came to emergency trauma care. Every night, after you all rested, Lord Xiao would summon us to his tent and teach us methods for treating external injuries, including how to use the medicines and tools he provided."

"There was such a thing…" a cavalryman muttered. "I ran into them once or twice while patrolling. I thought the Young Commander was just scared of dying and kept calling the medical officers over to check his pulse for peace of mind…"

The medical officer smiled. "Lord Xiao’s medical skills are beyond our reach."

Having trained in the Black Wind Army day in and day out, the cavalrymen had no idea that Gu Jiao had once treated the Crown Princess.

Another cavalryman, astonished, said, "So our Young Commander isn’t just skilled in battle, he knows medicine too."

He had said *our* Young Commander.

He hadn’t even realized how much that choice of words signified.

And it seemed no one else found it odd either.

"Why are you still standing around?" Gu Jiao turned to glance at the few soldiers lingering at the back, whispering among themselves.

They quickly straightened up, composed themselves, and rode forward to catch up.

Before departing, Gu Jiao had already chosen the campsite. It was a spot three miles from the canyon, nestled at the foot of a small mountain with a dense forest behind it.

The rear camp had already been relocated there. The tents were set up, and dinner was prepared.

Gu Jiao ordered the wounded soldiers to rest inside the tents, while the injured Black Wind Cavalry horses were also led away for treatment.

As for the seized grain supplies, they were handed over to Zhang Shiyong and Zhou Ren, the commanding officers of the rear camp.

Li Jin and Tong Zhong from the Assault Camp arrived outside Gu Jiao’s tent to report on the ambush preparations in the canyon.

"Good." Gu Jiao nodded. "Have the soldiers eaten?"

"They have." Li Jin replied.

Gu Jiao said, "Once night falls, the Nangong Family’s rebel forces will move. Everyone must be ready for battle."

"Yes!" The two men cupped their fists in salute.

"My Lord, who is this?" Advisor Hu came rushing over in a panic, glancing at the man tied up tightly and tossed onto the ground. "Is he a rebel?"

"Nangong Ze." Gu Jiao said.

Advisor Hu nearly jumped in shock. "Na-Na-Na… Nangong Ze? The Third Master of the Nangong Family? M-My Lord, you captured him?"

"Keep him as bait." Gu Jiao clapped the dust off her hands, no longer paying attention to Nangong Ze lying on the ground. Instead, she turned to Li Jin and Tong Zhong. "Based on your understanding of the Nangong Family, who do you think they'll send to lead the troops tonight?"

Li Jin pondered for a moment before answering, "Chang Wei."

Tong Zhong added, "If not Chang Wei, then it’ll be the fourth master of the Nangong Family."

Gu Jiao said, "The Nangong Family’s fourth master is busy transporting another batch of grain supplies. Right now, Mu Qingchen is leading them on a wild goose chase, so they won’t be able to make it tonight."

She mentioned Mu Qingchen, not Zhao Lei.

Technically speaking, Zhao Lei was the commanding officer of that Black Wind Cavalry unit, while Mu Qingchen held no official position. If anyone were to lead the enemy on a diversion, it should have been Zhao Lei.

However, since Mu Qingchen was on good terms with her, the two men simply assumed she was used to bringing up Mu Qingchen’s name and didn’t overthink it.

"That means it can only be Chang Wei." Tong Zhong said, his expression suddenly turning grave. "If it’s Chang Wei, that’ll be troublesome. He’s even harder to deal with than Fourth Master Nangong. He’s a true battlefield general."

Gu Jiao, unbothered, said indifferently, "Whether he’s formidable or not, we’ll find out once we fight him."

......

Night fell.

Clad in full armor, Chang Wei led an imposing army of eighty thousand soldiers out of Quyang City, marching eastward toward Feng County.

This force was fully equipped, comprising archers, cavalry, infantry, and siege chariots.

It was clear they were preparing for a decisive battle against the Black Wind Cavalry.

Chang Wei came from a humble background, earning his reputation as a formidable border general through sheer strength and countless battles. His combat experience was vast, and even when facing the invincible Black Wind Cavalry, he had his own strategies to counter them.

When the army was three miles from the canyon, Chang Wei ordered a halt.

"General?" His deputy looked at him in confusion.

Gazing at the canyon ahead, its dark expanse resembling the gaping maw of a colossal beast, Chang Wei said coolly, "They will definitely set up an ambush in the canyon."

The deputy glanced at the towering peaks that stretched into the sky and nodded in agreement. "Indeed, this is a perfect place for an ambush. What does the general intend to do?"

Chang Wei, ever the shrewd strategist, replied, "Take a unit and launch a feint attack. Force them to reveal their hand. Once they exhaust their ambush tactics, withdraw. I have my own plan!"

At dusk, the entire Black Wind Cavalry entered a state of combat readiness—some were tidying up, while others were setting off.

Nangong Ze was tied to a wooden stake in the middle of the camp with his hands bound behind his back.

He had regained consciousness half an hour ago, initially expecting to suffer some inhumane torture, yet to his surprise, nothing of the sort happened.

After tying him up here, those people simply ignored him.

His injured palm was wrapped in gauze, and judging by the absence of excessive bleeding, the wound seemed to have been treated.

He watched as cavalrymen passed back and forth in front of him, his brows furrowing deeply.

The place where he was bound was very close to the command tent of the Black Wind Cavalry. With his keen hearing, he could catch the conversations inside. He knew that a fierce battle was going to take place tonight and was also aware of the preparations the Black Wind Cavalry had made.

If only he could deliver their battle plans to the Nangong Army, they would be able to crush the Black Wind Cavalry effortlessly!

Unfortunately, that brat had bound him with iron chains, and he couldn’t break free no matter how hard he tried!

He attempted to attract the attention of the cavalry, hoping to trick them into taking him to the Black Wind Cavalry’s commander, then he could seize the opportunity to escape.

But no matter how many times he called out, the cavalrymen passing by acted as if they were deaf.

“Damn it!”

Nangong Ze gritted his teeth.

He had to find a way to get out of here.

He could not allow himself to become a bargaining chip for the Black Wind Cavalry to use against the Nangong Army.

Just as he was racking his brains for an escape plan, he saw Gu Jiao stepping out of her tent, holding a helmet in her arms.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
