The Nangong Family had bred many fine warhorses over the years at the border.
However, their steeds were inherently inferior to those of the Black Wind Cavalry in terms of breed, and their cavalry training also fell significantly short.
There was a reason why the Black Wind Cavalry horses were known as warriors even among warhorses.
The deputy general could no longer maintain his composure.
After barely clashing with the enemy, he hurriedly issued a retreat order.
Cheng Fugui roared with passion, “Brothers! Charge! Kill them all! Don’t let a single rebel escape!”
When it came to speed, what cavalry unit could possibly outrun the Black Wind Cavalry?
Fortunately, General Chang Wei had prepared in advance!
“Release!”
At the deputy general’s command, the rebels quickly retrieved small objects from their belongings and tossed them onto the ground.
Immediately after, the deputy general plucked a fire-oil arrow from the corpse of a fallen rebel and hurled it toward the scattered objects.
A series of earth-shattering explosions erupted, turning the canyon into a thick haze of smoke and dust as the black powder detonated.
Due to limitations in both formulation and manufacturing techniques, the black gunpowder of today did not possess particularly devastating explosive power.
Instead, it was primarily used in conjunction with smoke screens and knockout gas.
Cheng Fugui urgently yanked at his reins. “Halt! Stop right now! Be careful! There’s knockout gas!”
This unexpected disruption bought the deputy general and his men precious time.
They managed to retreat just in time, returning to the main forces of the Nangong Army.
The Black Wind Cavalry pursued relentlessly, their presence unmistakable, as even from a distance, Cheng Fugui’s furious curses could be heard loud and clear.
Chang Wei’s brows knitted together when he saw the returning soldiers; less than five hundred had survived.
He had never underestimated the enemy, yet even so, the sheer strength of the Black Wind Cavalry had exceeded his expectations.
However, this was the end of the road for them.
After tonight, the Black Wind Cavalry would be erased from existence.
As the last rebel soldier crossed into the designated safe zone, Chang Wei turned to the soldiers stationed along both sides of the road and gave his command. “Raise it!”
The soldiers, each wearing gloves, swiftly pulled several nearly invisible strands across the road, fastening them tightly to iron pillars that had been pre-planted on both sides.
The pillars themselves were wrapped in the same material as the gloves, an almost imperceptible fabric.
If Gu Jiao were here, she would immediately recognize these strands as the legendary snow silkworm thread, once found in the imperial palace of Great Yan.
It was razor-sharp, capable of slicing through anything without a trace.
And yet, it was nearly impossible to see or detect.
By the time the Black Wind Cavalry charged forward, all that would remain of them would be mere flesh and blood.
To further deceive them, their own elite warriors would put on a performance, swinging their swords dramatically, creating the illusion that the cavalry was being cut down by sword qi instead.
This was the highest level of deception in warfare.
The Black Wind Cavalry, unaware of the truth, would continue charging forward, determined to eliminate the so-called swordmasters. Yet, one after another, they would fall, never realizing that no human blade had taken their lives. only the invisible threads of snow silkworm.
“Charge—brothers—!”
“Keep going! Charge!”
“Slaughter these traitors!”
Cheng Fugui’s voice roared through the official road, igniting the fervor of the Black Wind Cavalry as they followed him without hesitation.
The deputy general, seated atop his horse beside his general, watched as the Black Wind Cavalry finally entered their view. A cold smirk curled at his lips. “General, you truly are a master strategist. They’ve fallen for it!”
Cheng Fugui galloped forward, his eyes blazing with the thrill of battle. “I see them! The Nangong rebels are just ahead! Brothers, charge—”
Chang Wei did not so much as blink.
Nothing would pass through the snow silkworm thread. Only shredded flesh would remain.
There was no need to prepare the archers.
No need to order the cavalry or infantry to act.
A simple hand gesture was all it took, to signal his elite warriors to begin their performance.
Of course, the swordmasters had to position themselves high enough, somewhere prominent, so that every Black Wind Cavalry soldier could see them clearly.
“Climb to the pillar tops.” He ordered.
More than a dozen elite warriors executed their qinggonq techniques, soaring up onto the wooden pillars in a single leap.
Cheng Fugui and his troops surged forward, nearing their target. They rounded a bend, momentarily disappearing behind a hillside. Once they emerged onto the official road——
The slaughter would begin.
Three… two… one.
The deputy general counted down silently in his mind.
Three… two… one!
Again, he counted.
“Hmm?” He stared blankly at the pitch-dark hillside.
Had they failed to round the bend?
Why weren’t they appearing?
Wait.
The sound of hooves…
It was gone!
“General?” The deputy general turned to Chang Wei, a bewildered expression on his face, unable to comprehend what had just happened.
Chang Wei’s brows furrowed deeply.
Just moments ago, the noise had been deafening, so loud it felt like it could split a man’s head open. Yet in the blink of an eye, everything had fallen into an eerie silence, as if the entire world had been swallowed whole.
Had something happened behind the hillside just as they rounded the bend?
But even so, it was impossible for an entire force to suddenly—
No!
Something was wrong!
Chang Wei abruptly turned around, his gaze locking onto the vast, densely packed ranks of the Nangong Army behind him.
“Woooo—”
A war horn suddenly echoed from the rear of the Nangong Army, breaking the silence like the opening of a grand, unstoppable battle in the dead of night.
In the next instant, the deep pounding of war drums followed.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Each strike resounded like the furious roar of the underworld itself.
The horn had sounded. The war drums were beating. The rhythmic thunder of galloping hooves approached with unwavering precision. Even the metallic friction of armor-clad soldiers moving was synchronized to perfection.
In the darkness, the Xuanyuan Family’s Soaring Eagle banners unfurled in the wind, whipping through the canyon like the mighty roar of a dragon, shaking the souls of all who heard it.
Twenty thousand Xuanyuan Iron Cavalry charged forward, clad in pitch-black armor, with matching dark helmets. Even their warhorses were draped in blackened battle armor.
Chang Wei’s gaze locked onto the young commander leading them.
With just one glance, he felt——it was a Xuanyuan youth.
It wasn’t his appearance that gave him away, nor his name or title. It was the raw killing intent emanating from him, the untamed, predatory aura of a wolf.
In an instant, an icy chill shot through Chang Wei’s entire body, as if he had been plunged into a frozen abyss.
With a sharp movement, the youth lowered the iron mask attached to his helmet, revealing only a pair of calm, unwavering eyes. “Attack!”
As one, every single Xuanyuan Iron Cavalry soldier raised a hand and lowered the cold steel visors of their helmets in perfect unison.
The hunt had begun!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
