’Even though not many people have moved into the neighborhood yet, kissing in the yard like this is still a bit inappropriate!’
She pushed him away, her face flushed red. "There’s roll call tonight. I have to get back to school."
After she spoke, she went back inside to get her bag. Just as she was about to leave, Nathaniel Nathan blocked the doorway. "Are you sure you’re not staying with me tonight?"
She could only repeat what she had just said. "The school has roll call tonight..."
Nathaniel gave her an icy look. "Vera Xavier, one day you will pay for today’s choice in blood."
Vera shivered at his words. But he had already picked up a jacket and draped it over her shoulders. "Idiot. The temperature changes drastically between morning and night. Are you trying to catch a cold?"
Vera was thrown for a loop. He grabbed another jacket for himself, put it on, then took the brick phone from the table, stuffed it into her bag, and opened the door, striding out ahead of her.
He took a few steps, then noticed she hadn’t followed. He turned back to her. "What are you doing just standing there like an idiot? Changed your mind about going to school? Want to stay here and sleep with me instead?"
Vera immediately snapped out of it and hurried out. She couldn’t figure out what he was up to, so she couldn’t help but ask, "Why are you getting dressed?"
She was really asking why he was putting on a jacket, but his response made her want to die. "So, you’d rather I strip naked and stand in front of you?"
Vera quickly shook her head. "No! You’re fine just like this!"
Nathaniel Nathan shot her a sidelong glance but said nothing more. He reached out and took her hand. His palm was warm, and the calluses on his fingertips were distinct, tickling her palm slightly where they pressed against her skin.
Vera stole a glance at him. His lips were pressed into a thin line, and his whole demeanor seemed incredibly cold.
’He’s clearly the coldest person imaginable,’ she mused, ’so why is he such a natural at being a scoundrel?’
At that moment, she finally understood his intention. He was going to walk her back to school.
’Actually, as long as he keeps his hands to himself,’ she thought, ’being with him is a wonderful thing.’
The walk from the villa to the school gate took only about ten minutes. When they arrived at the main entrance, the guards on duty immediately recognized Nathaniel Nathan. Even though they were Sheldon Caldwell’s men, they subconsciously snapped to attention and saluted Nathaniel.
Nathaniel returned the salute and walked inside with Vera. The soldier glanced curiously from Vera to Nathaniel, certain that Vera was the same girl who had left with Sheldon Caldwell last time.
He scratched his head. Something he’d been so sure about suddenly felt wrong.
Nathaniel walked Vera all the way to the bottom of her dormitory building. As they arrived, they happened to run into Fiona Wright, who was coming downstairs to get hot water. Fiona saw Vera first and said happily, "Vera, you’re back! I just went and got you some hot water..."
Fiona was about to ask Vera to help her carry the kettle upstairs, but the moment she saw Nathaniel, she froze. The rest of her sentence died in her throat, and she instinctively took a step back.
