Chapter 712: Chapter 712: A Couple’s Bond (6)
"It’s alright. I’ll make things clear to them." Winter Sullivan took a deep breath, raising a handkerchief to wipe the tear tracks from the corners of her eyes.
With that, she opened the car door and stepped out. Sheldon Caldwell watched her go, a sense of worry stirring within him. Although he and his mother were close, he was still the son, and it wasn’t his place to meddle in his elders’ affairs.
He knew Winter Sullivan wasn’t the type to throw a fit and run home to her parents over every little thing. This time, her fight with Julian Caldwell must have been serious. He felt utterly helpless.
He considered going home to try and talk some sense into Julian Caldwell, but then he remembered his father didn’t seem particularly fond of him. ’And besides,’ he thought, ’Dad’s furious right now. I’d better not poke the bear. It’s safer to just head back to school.’
After Winter Sullivan and Sheldon Caldwell left, Vera Xavier sat alone in the garden, lost in thought. Nathaniel Nathan handed her a glass of freshly squeezed juice and said, "Vera Xavier, if you keep sitting here like this, I’m going to get angry."
Vera Xavier took the juice, offering him a small smile. "The Nathaniel Nathan I know is a magnanimous man. He wouldn’t get angry over something so trivial."
"You’re wrong. I’m not that magnanimous," Nathaniel Nathan said, looking at her. "Right now, your mind is completely occupied by your family. I’m very angry."
Vera Xavier reached out and playfully pinched his nose. "Then you’re just being petty. Even if I’m thinking about them right now, you’re still the most important person to me."
Nathaniel Nathan grabbed her hand, his expression displeased. "Don’t try to placate me. I’ve figured you out. You’re a little liar."
’This little vixen was always telling him how much she missed him and liked him, but it felt like she was just stringing him along every time.’
’He used to think that once they were in Veridia, he could finally have her all to himself. But that wasn’t how things turned out. In Veridia, she was either busy with military training or worrying about her family. They finally got a precious day to spend together, and even that was ruined by her relatives.’
’He was not happy. Not happy at all!’
Vera Xavier rested her chin on her hand and sighed softly. "I’m not lying to you. You really are the most important person to me. As for my family... it’s a terrible feeling, having them right in front of me and not being able to acknowledge them. Even though my mom and my brother didn’t say why they came here today, I know something must have happened at home. Otherwise, Julian Caldwell wouldn’t have gone to see Susan Caldwell instead of picking my mother up from the hospital."
’This was what she’d been dwelling on. She’d always assumed Winter Sullivan and Julian Caldwell had a good relationship. At least, in her past life, before she died, all the stories she’d heard about them were about what a loving couple they were.’
’But now, she was discovering that wasn’t the case at all. It seemed there was friction between them.’
’She didn’t know if this was some kind of butterfly effect triggered by her rebirth, but the situation was starting to worry her.’
"So you haven’t been thinking about me at all today. You’ve been thinking about them this whole time, haven’t you?" Nathaniel Nathan asked in a low voice.
Vera Xavier decided she had better soothe his ruffled feathers. The last thing she needed was a fire in her own backyard. She nestled gently into his embrace and said, "Of course not, I..."
Before she could get the words out, his lips descended on hers, silencing her. Then, the cool juice flowed from his mouth into hers.
Vera Xavier’s eyes shot wide open. ’You’ve got to be kidding me! He’s really going to pull a stunt like this? We’re in the garden!’
