Chapter 705: Chapter 705: Happy Times (5)
"Of course not!" Sheldon Caldwell would never admit to that in front of Nathaniel Nathan. He sighed and said, "It’s my mom. She’s been in a bit of a mood, and I saw how well she and Vera get along, so I just wanted to cheer her up."
Nathaniel Nathan shot him a look, clearly not buying his explanation.
But Sheldon continued, "For years, my mom has been so engrossed in weapons research she can’t pull herself away. As a result, she doesn’t really have any close friends. She always shoulders her burdens alone, and I just don’t want her life to be so hard. It would be good for her to have someone to talk to."
Nathaniel paused, slightly taken aback. He’d heard about Winter Sullivan’s personality—she was the renowned "Iron Lady" of their circle. There was nothing wrong with that, but now that she was his mother-in-law, he couldn’t help but feel a little invested.
He turned his head to look at Vera. She was talking with Winter Sullivan about something, and both of them were smiling. They looked so natural and at ease together.
It was rare for him to have a day off to spend with Vera, so he had been a little annoyed when Sheldon interrupted them. But now, seeing how happy Vera looked with Winter Sullivan, that irritation just melted away.
He knew that Rona Langdon had treated Vera horribly back when she lived with the Preston Family. ’Deep down,’ he thought, ’she must have longed for a mother’s love.’ As far as he was concerned, as long as she was happy, nothing else mattered.
Besides, he knew she was a daughter of the Caldwell family. Sooner or later, she would have to spend time with her own relatives.
So, for once, Nathaniel was in a surprisingly good mood and said nothing. Seeing this, Sheldon thought that while Nathaniel’s temper was usually foul, maybe he wasn’t completely hopeless. ’It seems you can have a reasonable conversation with him after all.’
He turned to look at Winter Sullivan’s smiling face and felt that coming here today had been the right decision.
He even started scheming. ’Maybe I should bring Mom here whenever Vera has a day off?’ He thought the idea was quite feasible, though Nathaniel would probably hate his guts for it.
Vera and Winter Sullivan made small talk. In essence, their ways of thinking were quite similar, so the conversation flowed comfortably between them.
They couldn’t just sit and chat, so Vera decided to peel an apple for Winter Sullivan. But just as she was about to get the fruit knife, Nathaniel beat her to it, already picking one up and starting to peel.
After Nathaniel finished peeling the apple, he handed it to Winter Sullivan first, then peeled another one for Vera.
Seeing this, Sheldon quickly chimed in, "Hey, peel one for me, too! I’m a guest here, after all!"
Nathaniel just rolled his eyes at him. With a flick of his wrist, he sent the fruit knife flying, embedding it perfectly in another apple. He then grabbed the apple and thrust it toward Sheldon.
Sheldon pouted. "You’re playing favorites! I protest!"
Nathaniel couldn’t be bothered to bicker with him and simply opened the door. The meaning was clear: if Sheldon had a problem, he could get out right now.
Sheldon was speechless. He meekly started peeling his apple.
Seeing their antics, Winter Sullivan couldn’t help but laugh. ’It seems Nathaniel isn’t quite like the rumors say,’ she thought.
Winter Sullivan almost never set foot in a kitchen, so she didn’t know how to cook. As the lady of the house, the task naturally fell to Vera.
Winter felt a little bad, so she offered to help by chopping some vegetables. But she had only made two cuts into a potato before she sliced her own hand. Fortunately, she had been cutting slowly, so the wound wasn’t deep.
