Vera Xavier looked at her and gave a slight smile. "There’s one more thing I forgot to remind you of, Senior Rhodes. Regarding how you’ve been pressuring these students over the past year—well, they’ve collected evidence. If this whole thing really blows up, they will absolutely bring out all the proof of you bullying and coercing them."
"If you just think about it for a moment, you’ll realize what kind of punishment you’ll face once they present that evidence. Expulsion would be getting off light. You’ll be utterly disgraced."
The moment Vera finished speaking, the girl who had come with Autumn Rhodes said, "Autumn Rhodes, I’ve had it with you! At worst, we all go down together!"
"That’s right! This time, we’re fighting you to the bitter end!"
"You have powerful connections, but you care more about your reputation. For me, even if I get expelled, I can still find a job! But if *you* get expelled, your dad will probably beat you to death!"
Autumn Rhodes’s expression was grim and uncertain. She never imagined that these girls, who were usually so docile and followed her everywhere, would actually have the guts to stand up and defy her.
She stared at them, her eyes wide. They no longer avoided her gaze as they usually did. Instead, each one met her look with a cold stare.
A sense of foreboding washed over her. She knew that with Vera there egging them on, they would probably go through with it.
The only reason she had enjoyed the Rhodes Family’s support all these years was because she was exceptional. If she got expelled from Veridia University, her standing in the family would plummet.
The Rhodes Family was a large and powerful clan. If that happened, all the resources invested in her would be cut off, and she would be trampled into the mud by her cousins.
’This was a risk she absolutely could not afford to take!’
Vera watched her expression shift, the corners of her lips curling into a small smile. "Senior Rhodes, let me be honest with you. I’m a timid person. I could never bring myself to do something like murder. I am, however, very good at mutual destruction. If you feel you can’t just let this go, you’re more than welcome to come after me."
Autumn Rhodes was furious when she heard this, but she knew with absolute clarity that she had no choice but to swallow it.
Vera reached out and gently patted her cheek. "In my eyes, Senior Rhodes has always been a smart person. You’d never do something so impulsive and irrational. So, for you to come after me this time... were you perhaps goaded on by some petty person?"
Vera sighed. "To be honest, Susan Caldwell and I have some bad blood between us. She’s suffered several major losses at my hands. Before she provoked you into coming after me, I wonder, did she ever tell you how I tend to handle things?"
Autumn Rhodes froze for a moment. Ultimately, the reason she had come looking for trouble with Vera was indeed related to Susan Caldwell. Just last night, Susan had come to see her, subtly and not-so-subtly provoking her until she finally resolved to teach Vera a lesson.
’But Susan Caldwell had never once warned her that Vera wasn’t an easy person to deal with.’
Autumn Rhodes looked at Vera and asked, "What’s the deal between you and Susan Caldwell, exactly?"
Vera shrugged. "I don’t think you need to know the details. But I handle things much more honorably than Susan Caldwell does. What I *can* do is tell you what kind of person she really is."
