Sheldon Caldwell also knew that Julian Caldwell had always favored Susan Caldwell. Coupled with the good image Susan had built up in Julian’s eyes over the years, it would be strange if Julian actually listened to him.
He had always thought of Susan Caldwell as a kind and virtuous little sister. If it weren’t for this recent series of events, he would probably still be deceived by her. It was perfectly understandable that Susan could fool Julian Caldwell, who had always doted on her.
Vera Xavier chuckled at his words, knowing he must be utterly disappointed by Susan Caldwell’s actions today.
She looked at Sheldon Caldwell and asked, "Are you really Susan Caldwell’s biological brother?"
"The one and only," Sheldon Caldwell said irritably. "I already apologized. Can you stop taking digs at me?"
"I can. If you get lost, there’ll be no one left to mock you," Nathaniel Nathan interjected.
Sheldon Caldwell was instantly exasperated. "Is it really okay for you two to gang up on me like this?"
"I think it’s perfectly fine," Vera Xavier said with a grin.
Sheldon Caldwell shot her a glare. "You just think I’m an eyesore, don’t you! Fine, I’ll get going! But let me remind you two, this is a school. Behave yourselves!"
He finished with a wink at Nathaniel Nathan, then sauntered off.
Vera Xavier chuckled softly at his antics. Nathaniel asked her, "So, what happened today?"
Vera Xavier gave him a brief rundown of the day’s events, and Nathaniel Nathan’s brow furrowed instantly. Seeing his expression, she quickly added, "Don’t worry. I’m totally fine. In fact, I used it as a chance to give her a good thrashing."
"But this feels too passive," Nathaniel Nathan said, looking at her. "You can’t be on guard against a thief forever. We should probably be more proactive about this."
"How do we be proactive?" Vera Xavier asked curiously. She knew she was a daughter of the Caldwell Family, but she had no proof beyond her bloodline. That put her in a relatively passive position on the matter.
Nathaniel Nathan said calmly, "Announce our engagement, for example. I’d like to see who dares to lay a finger on you then."
Vera Xavier’s lips twitched. ’Am I being cornered into marriage again?’ She’d thought he was going to help her come up with a real plan, but she never expected him to circle back to this. She really had to hand it to him.
Nathaniel frowned slightly at her reaction. "What? You don’t want to?"
"Of course not," Vera Xavier quickly soothed him. "I’m a thousand percent willing, of course. It’s just... you saw your mother’s attitude last time I visited. She doesn’t seem to like me at all. If we suddenly announce our engagement, won’t she just make trouble for me every single day?"
The last time she and Brooke Mitchell met, they had been polite on the surface, but underneath, they were constantly sparring. She was almost certain Brooke Mitchell didn’t want to see her at all.
If they made a high-profile announcement now, even with Brooke Mitchell’s composure, she might not do anything too outrageous openly. But with that unresolved tension between them, who knew what secret methods Brooke Mitchell would use to make her life difficult later on.
The reputation of the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship as the most difficult in the world is definitely well-deserved. She’d gotten a glimpse of Brooke Mitchell’s personality last time; her future mother-in-law was no pushover. And her own temper wasn’t the best, either. If she and Brooke Mitchell really started going at it, Nathaniel would be the one stuck in the most awkward position in the middle.
