Seeing Sheldon Caldwell’s disdainful expression, Vera Xavier added, "Plus, there are wild animals on the mountain behind my house. When I’ve got nothing better to do, I go hunting. That’s why I’m so agile. The villagers call me the Beast-Hunting Master. Whether it’s a wild animal or a human acting like one, I can knock them back into their true form in minutes."
"That’s enough. Don’t rub it in after you’ve already won!" Sheldon Caldwell said irritably. "Nathaniel Nathan taught you those fighting skills, didn’t he?"
Vera Xavier thought this misunderstanding wasn’t half bad, so she nodded and said, "You’re amazing! How did you guess?"
Sheldon Caldwell rolled his eyes at her. "Yeah? Took you long enough to figure that out?"
Vera Xavier chuckled. Sheldon Caldwell suddenly looked at her, his expression serious, and said, "I’m sorry."
Vera Xavier asked, confused, "What did you do to feel so guilty about?"
"This apology is on Susan’s behalf," Sheldon Caldwell said, looking at her. "If it had been any other girl today, Susan probably would have gouged her eyes out. I’m glad it was you, and I’m glad that bastard Nathaniel Nathan taught you a few moves."
Vera Xavier waved her hand. "It’s not like you did it, so why are you apologizing? Besides, I didn’t get the worst of it today! Since we’re on the topic, let me be clear. If Susan Caldwell comes at me again, I’ll be more ruthless each time. Don’t you go feeling sorry for her when that happens."
’I actually went easy on Susan Caldwell today. After all, so many people were watching. If it had been somewhere else, Susan would have ended up with at least a broken arm or leg.’
Sheldon Caldwell’s gaze was complicated as he looked at her. After holding back for a moment, he finally said, "You’re Nathaniel Nathan’s girlfriend, all right. Just like him, you refuse to take a loss!"
"You got a problem with that?" A cool, detached male voice cut in.
The moment he heard that voice, Sheldon Caldwell immediately backed down. "How would I dare have a problem with you two!"
After speaking, he turned his head to look at Nathaniel Nathan. "Just finished a mission, then went straight into an exercise, and now you’re running over here. Look how busy you are!"
Nathaniel Nathan didn’t bother responding to him. He walked over to Vera Xavier’s side and asked, "Did he bully you?"
Before Vera Xavier could answer, Sheldon Caldwell was already retorting with a pout, "Someone like Vera Xavier? Who could possibly bully her? We should be thankful she’s not the one bullying others. Just today, she used a ’sparring match’ as an excuse to beat up my sister!"
Nathaniel Nathan immediately asked Vera Xavier, "You’re not hurt, are you?"
Vera Xavier shook her head. "I’m fine."
"Oh, good." Nathaniel Nathan’s tone was flat. "As long as you’re not hurt. Susan Caldwell is just asking for a beating. If your hand hurts from hitting her, I’ll do it next time."
Hearing his words, the corners of Vera Xavier’s mouth turned up. She let out a giggle and turned her head to look at Sheldon Caldwell.
In the past, Sheldon Caldwell would have said a few words in Susan Caldwell’s defense, no matter what. But today, even though Susan was his own sister, he felt there was no way he could speak up for her.
He sighed and said, "Just don’t beat her up in front of me. Otherwise, I won’t be able to explain it to my dad when I get home."
Julian Caldwell had called the school today and chewed him out. He wouldn’t listen to a single word of his explanation and even said a bunch of things that sounded completely bizarre to him.
He knew Susan Caldwell must have run to Julian Caldwell to tattle, twisting the truth around. He was beyond frustrated, but there was nothing he could do.
