So Susan Caldwell chimed in, "You don’t know Vera Xavier very well. What you see is just the surface. Her true nature is probably much worse than you imagine."
At its core, slander was nothing more than flapping your lips. When you hated someone, you just said the most disgusting things you could think of.
Upon hearing this, Autumn Rhodes stomped her foot in fury and muttered, "That shameless little bitch, daring to seduce Mr. Yale! I will find a way to expose her true colors!"
Susan Caldwell sighed and said, "You’d better not provoke Vera Xavier. She’s deeply manipulative and vicious. You might fail to expose her and end up getting trapped by her instead. That wouldn’t be worth it at all."
The highest form of instigation wasn’t merely twisting right and wrong, but a combination of slander, provocation, and then appeasement. Susan Caldwell had mastered this entire routine back when she was just a preteen.
She had even managed to manipulate Julian Caldwell, let alone someone like Autumn Rhodes who already couldn’t stand the sight of Vera Xavier.
Sure enough, Autumn Rhodes’s expression turned ugly. She glared at Susan Caldwell and said, "You’re useless. When Vera Xavier bullies you, you don’t even dare to make a peep. Well, I’m not afraid of that Vera Xavier. You just wait and watch the show!"
With that, she stomped off in a huff.
Susan Caldwell watched her back, raising an eyebrow slightly with a hint of disdain in her eyes. She muttered two words under her breath: "Dumb fool."
Seeing Autumn Rhodes act like this, she didn’t really think Autumn was a match for Vera Xavier. But as long as Autumn could obstruct and make trouble for Vera, she considered it useful. After all, she didn’t have to get involved personally, so why not let it happen?
After complaining to Julian Caldwell, Susan Caldwell returned to training. She didn’t cry or cause a scene when she came back; she just acted perfectly obedient.
Susan Caldwell watched Vera Xavier standing at the front of the formation. She bit her lip lightly; she had already come up with a way to deal with today’s events. ’I will absolutely not let Vera Xavier get away with this!’
When Sheldon Caldwell shouted, "Dismissed!" the students in training breathed a collective sigh of relief. After a round of stretching exercises, they began heading toward their dorms.
Vera Xavier also felt like her body was about to fall apart after today’s ordeal. She was dying to get back to her dorm and rest, but then she heard Sheldon Caldwell say in a low voice, "Vera Xavier, wait a moment."
Fiona Wright knew about the relationship between Sheldon Caldwell and Susan Caldwell. Standing next to Vera Xavier, she looked worried when she heard Sheldon’s command. Vera smiled at her and said, "You head back first. The Commander probably just has something to tell me about tomorrow’s training."
Fiona Wright whispered, "Be careful!"
Vera Xavier gave her a slight smile. After Fiona Wright left, Sheldon Caldwell walked over to Vera and said, "You were really something else today, weren’t you!"
"I didn’t do anything wrong." Vera Xavier spread her hands. "So, is the Commander praising me for fighting off a horde of heroes—ah, no, heroines—with my own strength and winning the position of platoon captain in one fell swoop?"
Sheldon Caldwell raised an eyebrow, and Vera Xavier continued, "Or perhaps you want to ask me how I did it? Looking for some pointers?"
"Heh." Sheldon Caldwell looked up at the sky.
Vera Xavier said with a smile, "Actually, I don’t have any special tricks. I’m just from the countryside and used to do farm work every day, so I’m a little stronger than the average girl."
