Actually, "afraid" wasn’t quite the right word. Sheldon Caldwell felt a deep-seated admiration and respect for Winter Sullivan.
Vera Xavier smiled faintly. "Oh, so that’s why. No wonder the upperclassmen at school said their military training was nowhere near as... uh... intense as ours. But I think it’s great. We might never get another chance to experience real military life, so this is the perfect opportunity."
Her words made Sheldon Caldwell’s heart leap into his throat, and he only let out a sigh of relief after she finished speaking. He found himself thinking that Vera Xavier was actually rather cute, and not so unreasonable after all.
Winter Sullivan smiled faintly. "Most kids these days are afraid of hardship. There aren’t many who think like you anymore."
Vera Xavier laughed. "Is that a roundabout way of calling me exceptional? If so, I accept."
Sheldon Caldwell shot her a look. "Vera Xavier, humility! Be a little more humble!"
"But I *am* exceptional!" Vera Xavier said earnestly. "Are you going to argue with that?"
Her words left Sheldon Caldwell speechless. He had to admit she was exceptional, but wasn’t humility in fashion these days? Even the most outstanding people were supposed to offer a modest smile when praised and say something like, "I’m actually quite ordinary!" or, "It was nothing, really!"
She, on the other hand, was something else. Winter Sullivan had barely hinted at a compliment before she started singing her own praises. Was that really appropriate?
For some reason, Sheldon Caldwell felt like Vera Xavier was competing with him for his mother’s affection. And most importantly, he realized he might not even be able to win! A sense of crisis washed over him.
He glared at her, but she just returned his glare with a faint smile.
Seeing their interaction, Winter Sullivan laughed again. If Sheldon hadn’t previously told her that Vera was with Nathaniel Nathan, she would have suspected that Vera and Sheldon were a couple.
She knew her son well; he wouldn’t be this relaxed around someone he wasn’t familiar with. As for Vera, there was an indescribable quality about her that made even Winter herself want to get closer.
Hearing his mother’s laughter, Sheldon Caldwell said, "Mom, see? Vera is awful. She and Nathaniel Nathan gang up on me all the time!"
Winter Sullivan nodded. "Mhm, that’s good. It’ll keep you from walking around with that ’I’m the king of the world’ attitude of yours."
Sheldon Caldwell looked as if he’d lost all will to live. "Mom, are you sure I’m your biological son? You didn’t just find me on the side of the road, did you?"
"Yes, I’m sure you’re my biological son," Winter Sullivan said earnestly.
Sheldon Caldwell let out a long sigh. "Fine, I see how it is. Now that you have Vera, you don’t want your own son anymore. I’ll go wait in the car. That way, I won’t be here getting on your nerves."
And with that, he actually walked out.
Vera chuckled at his antics. Winter Sullivan said calmly, "Don’t mind him. We can talk. It’s fine to let him wait."
Vera raised an eyebrow slightly. Winter Sullivan looked her over again. The young woman before her had bright eyes and pearly teeth, and an elegant, dignified air about her. She always gave Winter a sense of déjà vu.
So, she looked at Vera and said, "I don’t know why, but I always get a sense of familiarity whenever I see you. Are you sure you’ve never been to Veridia before?"
