Vera answered seriously, "It’s quite simple, really. Before bed, I lay out my clothes and fold my quilt. Then I just slip inside the folded quilt to sleep. In the morning, the moment I hear any stirring, I get dressed quickly. And since my quilt was already folded from the night before, a quick touch-up is all it takes to be considered properly folded."
The drill instructors had actually mentioned this method to the students before, but no one had paid it any mind.
But after witnessing Sheldon Caldwell’s "psycho" behavior, Vera decided she had to pay close attention to the drill instructors’ hints during the rest of the training. Otherwise, a single slip-up would land her right in Sheldon’s hands.
’Knowing him, if she ended up in his clutches, he’d never let her live it down.’
Sheldon’s gaze held a newfound admiration for her. He then turned to the other students and said, "Look at you, and then look at Vera Xavier. You’re all pathetic! You deserve your punishment!"
Hearing him stir up resentment against her in front of all the freshmen again, Vera gritted her teeth. Then she declared loudly, "It’s all thanks to our instructor’s excellent teaching!"
For some reason, her words made Sheldon’s teeth ache.
The military training schedule was six days on, one day off, and that much-anticipated day of rest arrived quickly.
All the students in the military training had been eagerly awaiting their day off. They felt that if the training continued like this, it would be the death of them!
So, most of the students spent the day lying in their dorm beds, resting.
Shirley Ewing and Fiona Wright were no exception, refusing to budge from their beds. Laura White, however, had left early in the morning, and nobody knew where she had gone.
Vera Xavier had plans with Winter Sullivan that day, so she also got up early. After getting ready, she headed out.
This round of military training had been relatively easy for her compared to the other students. Even though Sheldon was a bit sadistic, she didn’t feel overly exhausted.
Although Sheldon had given her a meeting address, he was already waiting for her in his car just outside the school.
When he saw Vera come out, he gave a short honk. The moment she saw it was him, she understood, pulled open the car door, and got in.
Today, he had swapped his military uniform for casual clothes. He had a roguish, carefree air about him, unlike when he was in uniform. Seeing him like this reminded Vera of when they first met, and she couldn’t help but feel this look suited him better.
’I must have been blind in my past life,’ she thought, ’to have ever considered him a respectable person.’
Sheldon said cheekily, "Vera, doesn’t this feel like we’re eloping?"
Vera shot him a sidelong glance. "How about I give Nathaniel a call and tell him you’re whisking me away to elope?"
"Don’t!" Sheldon had been beaten up by Nathaniel a few times recently, so he was sick to death of the guy and would snap at anyone who even mentioned his name. "Have some backbone, would you? Is talking about Nathaniel all day, every day, really so interesting?"
Vera replied seriously, "It is."
Sheldon: "..."
Seeing his expression, Vera smiled. "Actually, I could just as easily start talking about ’Sheldon Caldwell this’ and ’Sheldon Caldwell that’ in front of Nathaniel all day. How would you like to experience that?"
An inexplicable chill ran down Sheldon’s spine. He cleared his throat and said, "No, thanks. I’ve always been magnanimous. I wouldn’t stoop to fighting Nathaniel for mere bragging rights."
’If Vera really started mentioning my name to Nathaniel every day... knowing that guy’s personality, he’d beat me to a pulp daily!’
