Chapter 636: Chapter 636: Going to See Mom (4)
This created a stark contrast. By the third day, nearly every student was following Vera Xavier’s lead with the stretches and cool-downs.
Susan Caldwell had no intention of doing the exercises at first, but everyone around her was. While everyone else was no longer sore, she was the only one still in pain. At this point, she had finally abandoned any hope that Sheldon Caldwell would let her off easy just because she was his sister.
She even suspected that Sheldon Caldwell was doing this on purpose just to mess with her.
And there was no one she could complain to. She suspected Winter Sullivan might even be in on it. Although Julian Caldwell doted on her, he hated it when she used the Caldwell family name to ask for special privileges. He would probably just end up lecturing her that military training was supposed to be tough.
Susan Caldwell’s feelings were a tangled mess. The current situation felt as if Vera Xavier was offering her charity, but she had no choice but to accept it. ’This is unbearable!’
Every time Vera Xavier went to Susan Caldwell’s platoon to teach them the stretches and cool-downs, seeing the look on Susan’s face filled her with a deep sense of satisfaction.
’That feeling you get when someone hates your guts but is completely powerless to do anything about it and even has to meekly accept your charity... it’s just the best!’
Vera Xavier thought Nathaniel Nathan would visit her every night after that evening. However, he hadn’t been back since. Vera realized she was in a strange state—she was afraid he wouldn’t show up, but also afraid of what he might do if he did.
She suddenly felt that the two of them were finally starting to act like a real couple, always thinking about one another.
With Nathaniel Nathan not showing up, Sheldon Caldwell breathed a huge sigh of relief. He never held a nighttime training assembly again, terrified that such an act would summon Nathaniel, since that was exactly what had happened before.
Then he came up with a brilliant idea: he had the assembly bugle blown at around five in the morning. The students were completely bewildered. Learning their lesson from last time, none of them dared to worry about their appearance. No matter the situation, the priority was to get dressed and get down to the athletic field to assemble. Everything else could wait.
The outcome, however, was cruel. After enjoying the free spectacle of their disheveled state, Sheldon Caldwell had the instructors follow the students back to their dorms. He announced an inspection: they would be checking how well the students had made their beds. Anyone who hadn’t folded their quilt would have to run ten laps.
The students were about to lose their minds. ’What the hell! This guy doesn’t play by the rules at all!’
The thing was, Sheldon Caldwell had already told them before the training began that making their beds was part of the regimen. All students were required not only to get themselves ready but also to make sure their beds were tidy.
The students were all rendered utterly speechless. As a result, ninety-nine percent of them were sent to the athletic field to run laps as punishment.
Of course, this didn’t include Vera Xavier. The moment she heard the bugle, she got dressed within ten seconds, spent another ten folding her quilt, took five more to straighten the bedsheet, and then rushed downstairs. As for washing her face and all that, there was no time. That would have to wait until she came back for the lunch break.
Sheldon Caldwell looked at the impeccably neat Vera Xavier, and then at her perfectly folded quilt. His gaze held a hint of admiration. This girl wasn’t just smart; she was also exceptionally diligent.
So he asked Vera, "How did you manage that in such a short amount of time?"
In truth, Sheldon Caldwell’s plan had been to make everyone go for a morning run, but Vera Xavier’s competence was an unexpected development.
After all, getting dressed and assembling in such a short time was something only a trained soldier could pull off. He was thoroughly intrigued by Vera Xavier.
