Laura White ached all over today. She stole a glance at Fiona Wright beside her, only to find Fiona acting as if nothing was wrong. She was immediately reminded of the somewhat strange exercises Vera Xavier had led Fiona through the day before.
So, she glanced over at Vera Xavier. Vera’s form during the military training was perfect, and she didn’t look strained in the slightest.
She bit her lip lightly, remembering the scene of Vera saving that boy the other day. By now, she was more or less certain that Vera really did know some medicine—and from the looks of it, she was pretty good.
Laura White’s expression as she looked at Vera was complicated. Her mind wandered for a moment, and the drill instructor immediately pulled her out of formation, making her perform the last exercise five times in front of everyone.
She quickly snapped to attention, not daring to let her mind wander again, and focused on performing the training exercises properly.
During the break, the students were all groaning and sighing. Most of them plopped right down on the ground.
Vera knew that sitting on the ground right now wasn’t actually good for them, but she felt she’d already attracted enough attention. When she took a drink, she realized her water bottle was empty, so she got ready to go for a refill.
She had barely taken two steps when Laura White approached her. "Vera Xavier, are you sore?"
Vera immediately understood what she was getting at and replied with a smile, "A little sore, but it’s manageable."
Laura White pursed her lips slightly before asking, "Can you teach me those exercises you were doing yesterday?"
"You’re already experiencing muscle soreness," Vera explained. "Doing these exercises now will only relieve some of the tension. You’ll still be sore today, but it might feel a little better tomorrow. At worst, the pain will stay at its current level and won’t intensify. However, performing these while your muscles are tight will make your body feel both achy and stiff. Are you sure you want to learn?"
Vera had noticed before that while Laura White had a somewhat difficult personality, she wasn’t a bad person. So, instead of refusing, she simply laid out the facts.
Laura White hesitated for a moment before nodding.
Vera thought for a moment and said, "Then wait for me. I’m going to get some water, and I’ll teach you when I get back."
Laura White directly handed Vera’s water bottle to Fiona Wright, who was standing beside her. "Go get water for Vera. She’s going to teach me how to stretch now."
Fiona Wright froze for a moment, but Vera reached out and took the water bottle back from her hand. Then she said to Fiona, "Do you have any water left? I’m going to get a refill. If your bottle is empty, I can bring some back for you."
"I’ll go with you!" Fiona Wright said, grabbing her own water bottle.
Vera smiled and nodded, and the two of them started walking slowly toward the large water dispenser.
Once they were a bit farther away, Fiona Wright couldn’t help but ask, "Is there something wrong with that Laura White’s head?"
Vera patted her on the shoulder and said, "She probably has a few issues. She’s just a spoiled kid."
"A kid?" Fiona Wright laughed. "You say that like you’re so mature. We’re the same age!"
Vera just smiled and didn’t explain. ’She had lived two lives, after all. If you counted them both, she really was much older than them.’
As they walked, they noticed other students pointing at them and whispering from time to time. They couldn’t hear clearly, but they could vaguely make out words like "saving someone," "shameless," and "indecent."
All the staring made Fiona Wright’s skin crawl. She turned her head to ask Vera, "What are they on about?"
