Chapter 615: Chapter 615: First Suspicion (Part 1)
Sheldon Caldwell watched Vera Xavier’s retreating back and let out a nearly inaudible sigh. ’That girl is just too smart. That bastard Nathaniel Nathan must have some incredible luck to have landed her as a girlfriend.’
He silently pitied Susan Caldwell. ’She really had no foresight, picking an enemy like Vera Xavier. She’s just asking for more trouble down the line.’
He wondered if he should warn Susan one more time not to argue with Vera Xavier. But then he recalled Susan’s personality and figured the chances of him persuading her were slim to none.
The thought startled him. His first instinct when thinking about Susan was that she was difficult to persuade. This proved that the impression his sister had actually left on him was one of a competitive and stubborn person. And yet, he had always thought she was good-tempered and easy to talk to.
’Damn it!’ Sheldon Caldwell cursed inwardly. In his military unit, they had a term for this phenomenon: "false image."
When they used that term in the military, its meaning was usually different from how civilians used it. The "false image" they spoke of was a professional technique, one that delved deeper into the realm of psychology.
It described criminals who, despite having committed countless evil deeds, maintained a kind image in the minds of those around them. Ordinarily, you would never be able to tell that they were such vicious people.
These kinds of people are exceptionally skilled at planting psychological suggestions. They can easily brainwash others to achieve their own ends.
For the first time, Sheldon Caldwell seriously considered the possibility. ’Has Susan been using the psychology she’s learned to deceive our whole family? Is that why we sometimes feel like something is off about her, but can’t quite put our finger on it?’
If that were the case, then his sister was far too calculating, and a truly terrifying person.
Now that the thought had occurred to him, Sheldon decided he would have to keep a closer eye on his sister from now on and see what kind of person she truly was.
Vera Xavier had no idea what Sheldon Caldwell was thinking. Her own thoughts were on her upcoming Sunday meeting with Winter Sullivan. ’Come to think of it,’ she mused, ’this will be the first time we’ve ever formally met as mother and daughter.’
For some reason, she felt a flicker of anticipation.
When she got back to her dorm, Laura White glanced at her and said, "You really made a splash at school today. But you’d better watch your back. Even if you win the confrontation, you have to be careful of people trying to stab you in the back later."
With that said, Laura White picked up her washbasin and headed to the bathroom to do her laundry.
Vera was a little surprised. Laura White’s words were clearly meant as a warning.
Before she could even process what Laura meant, Shirley Ewing had already scooted closer. "Vera, is Susan Caldwell really The Devil Instructor’s sister?"
Vera nodded. Shirley Ewing wailed, "We’re doomed! If he can be that ruthless to his own sister, what’s he going to do to us? It looks like our month of military training is going to be absolute hell."
Vera just smiled. "Think of it as a workout. It’ll be over before we know it."
That did little to comfort Shirley Ewing, who was already hugging her blanket and sobbing.
Fiona Wright sighed. "Right now, I’m genuinely wishing I had a heart condition. I could just pass out and never have to go to military training again!"
