Chapter 614: Chapter 614: Sharing a Secret (6)
Of course, Sheldon Caldwell wouldn’t tell Vera Xavier these things.
Vera Xavier let out a light laugh when she heard this. Sheldon Caldwell looked at her and asked, "What are you laughing at?"
"I’m laughing at the thought that if your mother is so just, would she just pull out a gun and shoot Susan Caldwell if she found out what she’s been doing?" Vera Xavier said with a deadpan expression.
Sheldon Caldwell glared at her. "What nonsense are you talking about! Susan can be a bit willful sometimes, but she’s absolutely kind-hearted and knows her limits. She would never act so recklessly."
Seeing him get slightly angry, Vera Xavier sighed inwardly. ’So this is the impression Susan Caldwell has left on the Caldwell Family.’ This was proof enough that Susan Caldwell usually acted with discretion, which was why her image hadn’t crumbled after all these years.
She said faintly, "Is that so? Then you really don’t know your sister at all. I haven’t interacted with her much, and I won’t bring up the incident with Trellis, lest you say I’m trying to slander her. But just based on what happened today, which you saw for yourself, do you think that’s something a person with discretion would do?"
"Even if we met once before through Trellis and had some friction, does that give her the right to say she knows me and claim I have a depraved character? Don’t you realize I’m just a student who’s barely started university? If I’m saddled with a reputation for having a ’depraved character,’ what do you think the rest of my university life will be like?"
"What kind of grudge, what kind of hatred could there possibly be between us for her to try and ruin me, to the point of potentially destroying someone’s life?"
Sheldon Caldwell froze. He carefully replayed the incident in his mind, a hint of shock appearing in his eyes.
Vera Xavier added, "She was lucky that the person she targeted today was me. If it had been a more soft-spoken or timid girl, her entire life might have been ruined. Do you think that’s the kind of thing a kind-hearted and discreet person would do?"
Sheldon Caldwell fell silent, offering no further explanation.
Although he wasn’t present when it happened, he had already investigated the matter. He had also called Susan Caldwell to confirm the details, but she had just cried and insisted that Vera Xavier had deliberately framed her.
Perhaps because Susan had been crying, Sheldon Caldwell had subconsciously assumed she hadn’t thought things through and that it was all just a misunderstanding stemming from her previous friction with Vera Xavier.
But now, after Vera Xavier’s questioning, he felt things might be different. For the first time, he began to wonder: ’Is Susan really kind-hearted?’
Vera Xavier stood up and said, "I was a little worried your mother wanted to stand up for Susan Caldwell. But since you just said she’s just and impartial, then I have no reason not to meet her. Susan Caldwell still hasn’t apologized to me for today. What a coincidence."
Sheldon Caldwell glanced at her, his expression complicated. He also stood up. "Sunday, 10:30 AM. South Wind Teahouse."
Vera Xavier nodded and smiled at him. "Alright then. If there’s nothing else, I’ll be heading back. Esteemed Drill Instructor, sir, I’ll be on my way. I hope you’ll be merciful tomorrow and continue to torture us freshmen with abandon."
Sheldon Caldwell: "..."
’He’d thought she was going to ask him to go easy on them during military training tomorrow, not that she was actually asking for more torture.’
But Vera Xavier paid him no more mind, simply turning and walking back toward the school.
