’Must she really acknowledge a brother who so clearly wasn’t right in the head?’ Vera Xavier wondered.
’And what kind of older brother tells dirty jokes in front of his little sister?’
She smiled at him. "I have a secret about Nathaniel Nathan to share with you."
When Sheldon Caldwell heard this, he immediately perked up. "What secret?"
’He didn’t know why, but he felt a strange closeness to Vera Xavier whenever he saw her. It was as if he could say anything to her. He was actually a man with a lot of self-control; it was just that he acted a bit... off... whenever she was around.’
Vera Xavier beckoned to him with her finger. He immediately leaned closer. She gave him a little wink, and he moved in even nearer. Just as he was getting ready to hear her secret, she reached out and clawed his neck.
She hadn’t held back, leaving four distinct red marks on his neck.
"Holy crap!" Sheldon Caldwell yelped in pain as he jumped back. "How could a young girl like you be such a trickster!"
Vera Xavier said with a wide grin, "I didn’t lie. That *is* Nathaniel Nathan’s secret."
Sheldon Caldwell was rendered speechless. He couldn’t tell if she was telling the truth or not. ’This girl, about the same age as my own sister, is far more interesting,’ he thought. ’She actually dared to scratch me!’
He glared at her. "Vera Xavier, you just wait!"
Vera Xavier smiled faintly. "Alright, I’ll be waiting. You guys have military drills coming up, right? If you dare to punish me tomorrow, I’ll have Nathaniel Nathan make your life a living hell."
’As the words left her mouth, she felt a surprising surge of confidence. Normally, if a girl was being picked on, she’d call her brother over to even the score. In her case, though, it was the complete opposite.’
’But for some reason, she found that she quite liked the feeling.’
Sheldon Caldwell’s chest tightened with frustration at her words. ’It’s bad enough that Nathaniel Nathan pushes me around in the army,’ he fumed silently. ’I thought I could finally get some payback by messing with his girlfriend during military training, but instead, *she’s* the one messing with *me*!’
’What is this nonsense?!’
Seeing his expression, Vera Xavier giggled. "There’s nothing for you to do here. You’re dismissed!"
Sheldon Caldwell was furious. He plopped back down in his seat. "Why should I listen to you!"
Vera Xavier, still smiling, called out loudly, "Owner, check please! This gentleman here is paying!"
The chubby owner replied, "You got it! Sixty-seven in total!"
Sheldon Caldwell’s eyes went wide as he stared at Vera Xavier. ’This girl must be addicted to picking on me!’ he thought. ’Making me pay!’
Vera Xavier smiled with cherubic innocence. "You’re the man here. It would be a loss of face for you to treat us to a meal and still make us pay. I’m just looking out for you."
Sheldon Caldwell ground his teeth. ’Me, treating them? When did I ever offer to treat them?! And besides, I haven’t even had a single bite of this food!’
But furious as he was, he still took out his wallet and paid the bill.
Vera Xavier had to stop herself from laughing at the sight. ’For some reason,’ she thought, ’he’s finally acting a bit like a proper older brother.’
After paying, he glared at her and said, "I’ve never met a girl as conniving as you. I must’ve been cursed for eight generations to end up knowing you two."
Having saved sixty-seven yuan, Vera Xavier was in a great mood, especially seeing that he wasn’t. "You didn’t come all this way just so I could pick on you, did you?" she asked. "So, spit it out. What’s up?"
