To any outsider, Susan Caldwell, who grew up in Veridia, and Vera Xavier, who grew up in Crestfall, should have had very little to do with each other. Yet here Susan was, her face grim, stewing in silence, unable to offer any real explanation.
After hearing what Vera Xavier said, the crowd of students understood everything.
Susan Caldwell had never been so humiliated. She tried to leave, but Vera Xavier wasn’t about to let her get away. Vera reached out and grabbed her. She was much stronger than Susan, who couldn’t break free from her grasp at all.
Vera Xavier looked at Susan Caldwell coldly. "You know, I can understand why you’re jealous of me. I am, after all, quite exceptional! But to be so jealous of my excellence that you’d try to slander me, to crush me under your heel, without any regard for the lives of others—that’s just what people call being vicious. So, Classmate Susan Caldwell, I have to ask: do your parents know you’re this malicious?"
Susan Caldwell’s face went pale again. With a loud WAIL, she burst into tears. "Vera Xavier, I already explained it to you! Today was just an accident! I didn’t do it on purpose!"
"Yes, you did say that," Vera said slowly. "But your premise was that I had misbehaved in the past, leading to this ’misunderstanding.’ Yet, you have yet to offer a single shred of evidence of this supposed misbehavior. So, on what grounds, exactly, are you basing your claim that it ’wasn’t on purpose’?"
’Susan Caldwell was so furious she could die. Right now, she wished she could call Leo Wright over to kill Vera Xavier. This girl was really pushing it!’
Vera looked at her. "Classmate Susan Caldwell, please answer my question. I want to know if you’re truly vicious or just pretending to be, so our classmates can see what kind of person you really are."
’Susan Caldwell had never met anyone as difficult as Vera Xavier. From the looks of it, Vera wouldn’t let her off the hook until she gave a proper explanation.’
’Susan had now experienced Vera’s sharp tongue firsthand. She knew full well that the vague accusations she’d used on others would never fly with Vera.’
’If she repeated any of the malicious lies she’d spread to slander Vera, Vera would demand proof on the spot. And she had no proof!’
’Shouldn’t most girls run and hide when they hear these kinds of slanderous rumors? Why doesn’t Vera play by the book?’
She considered fainting to get out of this mess. But just as the thought crossed her mind, Vera spoke again. "There’s something you should know. I studied medicine for a time, so I’m familiar with quite a few first-aid techniques. If you happen to ’accidentally’ faint today, I have plenty of ways to revive you."
Just then, one of Susan Caldwell’s roommates shouted, "Susan already said it was an accident! She’s explained herself, but you’re still being so aggressive. You’re going too far!"
"Wow, what a magnanimous soul this classmate is!" Vera scoffed. "By your logic, if you get hit, cursed at, or bullied in the future, you should immediately forgive the person as long as they say, ’I didn’t mean it, it was just a misunderstanding.’ You’re so noble! Why are you even in school? You should go be a saint."
The surrounding students let out a collective chuckle at her words. The roommate’s expression faltered. Vera’s retort was harsh, but it was impossible to argue with.
