The doctor finished speaking and called over two male students from the crowd to help carry the boy out of the cafeteria. Soon, an ambulance arrived, its siren wailing. The teacher who had come with Isaac Shawcross went with the student to the hospital.
Isaac Shawcross didn’t know the full story, but his medical skills were far more advanced than those of the doctor who had just examined the student. He knew with a single glance that the student had a severe heart condition.
He gave Vera Xavier a surprised glance. But she wasn’t paying him any attention at all; with a murderous glint in her eyes, she was already heading for the exit.
Isaac Shawcross found her expression intriguing and followed her out.
The moment the doctor confirmed that Vera Xavier had been performing emergency first aid, Susan Caldwell knew she was in trouble. She took the opportunity to slip away while the doctor was helping the student into the ambulance.
But Vera Xavier had been watching her every move. How could she possibly let her get away?
As Susan Caldwell walked down the steps of the cafeteria entrance, Vera Xavier shouted, "Susan Caldwell, stop right there!"
Her voice was powerful and commanding, and Susan Caldwell’s expression soured. She tried to leave, but Vera Xavier was much faster, grabbing her hand before she could get away.
Before Susan Caldwell could even react, Vera Xavier raised her hand and slapped her across the face.
Susan Caldwell clutched her face, her voice trembling on the verge of tears. "Vera Xavier, what are you doing?"
"Isn’t it obvious? I’m hitting you," Vera Xavier said, staring her down. "Of course, you’re welcome to hit back."
Susan Caldwell was rendered speechless. Back in Trellis, she had witnessed Vera Xavier’s fighting skills firsthand. Vera might not have been a match for Leo Wright, but she could definitely take Susan.
Susan Caldwell had been through military training and even learned a set of military combat techniques, but she had always been coddled. Martial arts required hard work, something she was terrified of. So, after being forced to learn the basics, she had never practiced again.
She was certain that if she dared to retaliate, Vera Xavier would, without a doubt, beat her up in front of the entire school.
Susan Caldwell ground her teeth in silent fury. The anger in her eyes was obvious, but she swallowed it down at the last moment. She took a deep breath and said, "You can’t blame me for what happened. It’s your own sordid past that makes people think the worst. Besides, that guy was perfectly fine a second ago. How could he just suddenly collapse?"
"More importantly, what you were doing was utterly shameless! Anyone could see you were molesting him!"
She had barely finished speaking when another sharp sting flared across her face. Vera Xavier had slapped her again, this time much harder than before.
By now, a crowd of students had gathered, many of them whispering amongst themselves, trying to figure out what was happening.
Just then, Fiona Wright stepped forward and explained loudly to the crowd on Vera’s behalf: "A moment ago, a student collapsed right in front of us! Vera Xavier realized he was suffering from cardiac arrest due to a sudden heart attack, so she immediately took decisive action to save him."
"But this student, Susan Caldwell, without knowing any of the facts, launched a personal attack on her. She accused her of publicly molesting the boy and incited other students to interfere."
"Vera Xavier was focused on saving a life, so she didn’t argue. But this student, Susan Caldwell, only escalated things, interfering with Vera, spewing all kinds of vicious insults, and even physically assaulting her!"
