Vera Xavier had no energy to deal with Susan Caldwell slandering her. As far as she was concerned, a reputation meant nothing when a life was on the line. She could always figure out a way to settle the score later.
The moment Vera turned around, Susan Caldwell snapped back to her senses. She yelled, "Vera Xavier, fine, be shameless all you want, but what gives you the right to hit someone!"
Her words were vicious this time, but she didn’t dare charge at Vera again. She didn’t want to get kicked a second time.
The students she had riled up also started shouting accusations at Vera. However, because the kick Vera had given Susan was so terrifying, none of them dared to get any closer.
Vera had no time to spare for Susan Caldwell. The boy’s heart had started beating—a sign that the rescue was about to succeed.
Fiona Wright glanced at Susan Caldwell, then back at Vera. She decisively chose to remain by Vera’s side.
As Vera gave the boy one last breath of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, he began to breathe on his own. He let out a faint cough and slowly opened his eyes.
Vera hadn’t expected him to regain consciousness so quickly. "How are you feeling?" she asked, surprised.
The boy’s gaze was hazy. When he saw Vera, it was as if he were looking at an angel. He had no strength, barely able to part his lips to whisper, "Thank you."
The boy was thin, and his face was still deathly pale.
Vera smiled at him. "I’m just glad you’re okay."
Just then, the wail of an ambulance siren sounded from outside the cafeteria. Vera mentally gave Shirley Ewing a thumbs-up. ’That girl’s timing was impeccable,’ she thought. ’That’s why the ambulance got here so fast.’
In truth, the credit didn’t belong entirely to Shirley. The military training had been more intense this year, and the school administration, worried about potential accidents, had requested an ambulance be stationed on campus. It just so happened that the ambulance hadn’t left yet, which was why it could arrive immediately after Shirley’s call.
A doctor and a nurse rushed up to the second floor with a stretcher. Accompanying them were two teachers from the school, one of whom was Isaac Shawcross, the same one who had passed by earlier.
It finally dawned on the crowd of onlookers that the boy who had collapsed might have been a genuinely critical patient. Many of them turned to look at Susan Caldwell.
Susan Caldwell hadn’t actually understood why Vera was performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the boy. She had simply seen an opportunity to slander Vera and couldn’t pass it up. She never expected Vera to actually save him.
If Vera was allowed to explain what really happened, Susan knew she would be the one disgraced at school.
So Susan Caldwell shouted, "Vera Xavier, now that the doctor and nurse are here, they can confirm exactly what you did to this boy! You’re completely shameless!"
Now that Vera had saved the boy’s life, she could finally deal with other matters.
She ignored Susan and addressed the doctor directly. "This student just went into cardiac arrest. I performed a series of emergency procedures on him. He’s regained consciousness, but his condition is still critical. I suspect he has a history of serious heart problems."
The doctor quickly examined the boy, then turned to Vera with admiration. "Your first aid was textbook perfect. Saving him within the golden four-minute window is truly remarkable! If we had only started resuscitation after we arrived, I’m afraid it would have been too late."
