Chapter 599: Chapter 599: Vera’s Wrath (3)
At the time, the general social attitude toward such things was relatively conservative. To many people, artificial respiration was essentially no different from kissing.
Although those present were all elite students, and most had heard the term "artificial respiration" before, this was the first time any of them had witnessed it in real life.
The surrounding crowd inevitably started to whisper.
"What is that girl doing? Is that artificial respiration?"
"I think so. But to do something like that in public... it’s so shameless. That girl has some serious nerve!"
"What’s with that guy on the ground?"
"That girl said he’s having a heart attack, but I don’t really know the details."
"A heart attack? For a heart attack, shouldn’t you just give him a Rapid Heart Saving Pill? Don’t tell me that girl is just trying to take advantage of him?"
"It looks pretty sketchy to me, too. It’s a human life on the line, after all. Does she even know what she’s doing? If she fails to save him... that would be just awful..."
After being pulled aside and scolded by Sheldon Caldwell, Susan Caldwell arrived at the cafeteria just in time to see Vera Xavier performing artificial respiration on the male student. Her eyes lit up. To her, this was the perfect, guilt-free opportunity to tear Vera down!
Susan Caldwell walked over, feigning panic, and said, "Vera Xavier, what are you doing?"
The sound of her voice made Vera Xavier feel sick. She was already on her third set of chest compressions, but the boy still hadn’t regained consciousness, and she was starting to worry.
In this race against time, no matter how disgusted she was with Susan Caldwell, Vera had no energy to spare for her. A human life was on the line.
When Susan Caldwell saw that Vera Xavier was ignoring her, she was secretly delighted. As long as Vera didn’t have the energy to talk back, it was the perfect time to drag her name through the mud.
So she said angrily, "Vera Xavier, I really didn’t think... I could let it slide that you didn’t respect yourself in the past, but it’s only the first official day of school, and you’re already this desperate to seduce boys? And in public, no less! Do you have no sense of shame at all?"
"I heard that you were already getting tangled up with that boy from your hometown on registration day, and now you’re pulling a stunt like this. Is this any way to treat your boyfriend?"
"I used to respect you so much because of your amazing grades. But I never imagined that you’d use that perfect-scoring brain of yours to behave with such poor character, so wantonly! We’re not even going to blame you for making all of us run ten laps today, since that involved the drill instructor, after all."
"But to think you’d knock that boy unconscious in front of all these people just to do something so outrageous in public... it’s just so disappointing!"
"I advise you to have some self-respect and get away from that boy at once!"
Her speech left the onlooking students stunned, their eyes wide with disbelief. They didn’t quite buy the latter part of her accusation, since some of them had seen the boy suddenly collapse on his own.
However, a subtle shift occurred in their minds when they heard Vera Xavier’s name. Everyone who got into Veridia University was a top student from across the country. And while these top students all had high IQs, they also tended to be quite proud. Suddenly encountering someone who was better than them, it was hard not to feel a bit resentful.
On top of that, Susan Caldwell’s words reminded them that it was because of Vera Xavier that all the freshmen had been punished with a ten-lap run during military training earlier that day.
