The girls all silently told themselves, ’We’re not the most miserable ones. Someone else has it even worse.’
By now, Susan Caldwell understood Sheldon Caldwell’s intentions. She was absolutely furious, but she couldn’t say a word.
Although Winter Sullivan had sent her to a military base for a month before, the situation then was completely different. Back then, once she left the base, it was over, and no one there recognized her.
But this time, these were the people she would be spending the next four years of university with. She had been utterly humiliated, and she wouldn’t be able to enjoy any special privileges at school.
After a full day of military training, everyone felt so exhausted they thought their bones would fall apart.
They were all as miserable as could be. When Sheldon Caldwell announced that the day’s training was over, many students immediately collapsed onto the ground.
Sheldon Caldwell walked along the training formation. The students sitting on the ground were so startled they immediately scrambled to their feet.
He swept his gaze over them but didn’t give them a hard time as he had that morning, simply continuing to walk forward nonchalantly.
When he saw Susan Caldwell, his face was cold as he said, "Follow me."
Susan Caldwell was furious with him, but she followed anyway, her expression sullen.
Vera Xavier watched the siblings walk away, one in front of the other, an indescribable feeling welling up inside her. She thought it might be envy, or perhaps jealousy—or maybe both. ’Susan Caldwell has taken so much from me.’
Her physical fitness was quite good. So, after that grueling ordeal, while she was tired, she felt she could still handle it. She knew the instructors had actually gone easy on them today.
Instead of heading toward the cafeteria with the other students, she stayed behind to stretch her arms and legs, relaxing her muscles. If she didn’t loosen up today, her whole body would be sore during training tomorrow.
Seeing her movements, Shirley Ewing asked curiously, "Vera, what are you doing?"
"I’m stretching," Vera Xavier said with a smile. "And relaxing my muscles. Otherwise, I’ll be too sore to train when I get up tomorrow."
"Really? Then teach me. I’ll do it with you," Shirley Ewing said quickly.
Fiona Wright, however, complained with a long face, "I’m so hungry and so tired! All I want to do right now is rush to the cafeteria and stuff myself!"
Vera Xavier and Shirley Ewing both started laughing.
Shirley Ewing tried to persuade Fiona Wright, "Let’s just stretch with Vera for a bit. It’ll only take a few minutes. I remember during military training in high school, after one day, I was so sore the next morning I felt like I was dying. You saw how sadistic that instructor is. Tomorrow will probably be even worse."
Fiona Wright was pouting, about to agree, when Laura White spoke up from the side, asking Vera Xavier, "You say stretching with you can relieve fatigue. Who taught you all this?"
"I figured it out myself," Vera Xavier replied.
Laura White said with a look of disdain, "Don’t think you know everything just because you got a perfect score on the entrance exam!"
After saying her piece, she lifted her chin slightly and walked away.
Vera Xavier understood her subtext. ’She’s just saying I’m only good at taking tests and don’t know a thing about something like this!’
She gave a slight shrug. Shirley Ewing tugged on her sleeve and said, "That’s just how she is. Don’t mind her. Let’s just do our thing."
Vera Xavier smiled and nodded, then showed Shirley Ewing the stretching and recovery movements.
