Brian Dixon, his old friend, naturally knew of his inner pain. He reached out and patted Isaac’s shoulder. "You’re not even fifty yet," he said. "And Veridia University is filled with the brightest and most talented students in the country. You’re bound to find the right disciple eventually."
Isaac Shawcrosscross let out a soft sigh. "I’ll be fifty in two years. I can’t believe I’ve gotten this old without even noticing."
Brian Dixon laughed, trying to console him. "I have a feeling this year’s batch of students is a lot craftier than usual. Take that Vera Xavier we ran into, for instance. The way she sang her own praises right in front of us... that girl’s got something special."
"That’s not being special, that’s being a narcissist," Isaac Shawcrosscross scoffed. "I’ve never met a student so in love with herself. Even if she has the talent to back it up, she shouldn’t be so brazen in front of us!"
Brian Dixon looked at him. "You call her a narcissist? You were just as bad, if not worse, when you were young. You have no right to criticize her!"
"Can she even compare to me?" Isaac Shawcrosscross said dismissively.
Brian Dixon burst out laughing. "Of course not! Everyone knows you’re the genius of the literary world, a true master! You made a name for yourself across the country by the time you were twenty!"
Isaac Shawcrosscross smiled at the compliment, but he had no desire to rehash the past.
He turned and glanced at the students undergoing their military training. Some were still standing at attention, while others had already begun practicing their marching drills.
Isaac Shawcrosscross suddenly felt an urge to find Vera Xavier in the crowd. He wondered if that insufferably arrogant little girl would be reduced to tears by the grueling training.
But there were too many students, all split into groups and wearing identical uniforms. He was extremely nearsighted; even with his glasses, it was impossible to spot Vera Xavier in that vast sea of faces.
Vera Xavier, however, saw him. He was looking around, though she couldn’t tell what for. A resolute conviction formed in her heart. ’In this life, just like in my last, I will make him my master!’
She had met him far too late in her previous life and hadn’t learned much from him as a result. This time, she would seize the opportunity. She wouldn’t let the regrets of her past be repeated.
After all, he was much younger now than when she’d first met him in her past life. There was still time for everything.
Under the watchful eyes of the entire freshman class, Susan Caldwell finished her run. By the time she was done, she felt like her legs were about to snap.
