Nathaniel Nathan offered him a single word: "Pathetic."
’That one word nearly made Sheldon Caldwell choke with indignation. What did he mean, "pathetic?" He always took second place in the company’s combat tournaments, you know? And before Nathaniel Nathan joined the company, he was the undisputed champion!’
’It wasn’t that he was pathetic; Nathaniel Nathan was just terrifying! He seriously wondered if Nathaniel was even human!’
Nathaniel Nathan seemed to read his mind and added unhurriedly, "As a true professional, you can never admit defeat, no matter the circumstances. Sheldon Caldwell, get up. Keep fighting!"
’Sheldon Caldwell’s head throbbed. Keep fighting? Any more of this and he’d be beaten to death!’

He lay on the ground, stubbornly refusing to get up. "I’ve already surrendered! I’m not fighting anymore!"
Nathaniel Nathan regarded him with utter contempt. He crouched down, leaned close to Sheldon’s face, and said, "Keep your sister in line from now on."
Sheldon Caldwell was completely baffled. ’Could this beating have something to do with Susan Caldwell?’
He immediately sat up and looked at Nathaniel Nathan. "What do you mean?"
"If you have a brain, figure it out yourself." The moment Sheldon sat up, Nathaniel Nathan reached out, stripped off his work coveralls, and put them on.
Since everyone there was a man, it wasn’t considered too outrageous for the victor, Nathaniel Nathan, to strip Sheldon Caldwell’s clothes off as a trophy.
But Sheldon Caldwell finally sensed that something was off. It was a well-known fact that Nathaniel Nathan was fiercely protective of his own. Once anyone or anything was labeled as "his," only he was allowed to touch them. Anyone else who dared to would pay the price.
That was why no one in the entire company dared to bully Nathaniel Nathan’s employees.
To say nothing of his woman. Sheldon Caldwell remembered the incident back in Crestfall quite clearly.
Sheldon Caldwell got to his feet and asked, "Are Susan and Vera Xavier at odds with each other?"
Sheldon Caldwell had sensed something on their first day of reporting. He’d asked Susan Caldwell about it back then, but she had been evasive and unwilling to go into detail.
As for what had happened with Susan Caldwell at Trellis, Winter Sullivan had mentioned a few things to him, so he knew she was investigating it.
Now, hearing Nathaniel Nathan’s words, he was almost certain that Susan Caldwell had picked a fight with Vera at Trellis.
After Susan Caldwell returned, she not only refused to talk about what happened at Trellis but actively avoided the subject. This meant she hadn’t come out on top.
For the Trellis incident to have been escalated all the way to Veridia, it must have meant Nathaniel Nathan had gotten involved.
He silently cursed to himself, ’That sister of mine, Susan, is so blind! Of all the people she could have offended, she just had to cross Nathaniel Nathan and Vera Xavier, that impossible pair. It would be a miracle if she didn’t end up in hot water!’
’He also felt deeply wronged. It would have been one thing if his sister suffered the consequences of her own actions, but she had to drag him into it too. How pitiful he was!’
Nathaniel Nathan gave him a look one might give an idiot, couldn’t be bothered to respond, and simply strode away.
Nathaniel Nathan had vented most of his frustration by now, so there was no need to give Sheldon Caldwell any more trouble. After all, they might end up as relatives someday.
Sheldon Caldwell curled his lip. ’He’d have to look into this when he got back to figure out what was really going on. He couldn’t just take a beating for no reason, could he?’
He spat the blood from his mouth. Noticing Nathaniel Nathan’s employees watching him with faint smirks, he glared at them. "What are you looking at? Never seen men fight before?"
