Chapter 579: Chapter 579: The Formidable Him (Part 1)
During training today, Sheldon Caldwell took advantage of his camp’s proximity to Nathaniel Nathan’s and provoked him several times.
Nathaniel Nathan was already fuming because he hadn’t been able to spend the night with Vera Xavier. He thought Sheldon Caldwell was a complete moron, but for a moron to walk right into the line of fire like this... if he didn’t react at all, he’d be doing himself a disservice.
So, with his approval, he had his men retaliate a little.
This led to some minor friction between the two branch companies. Private fights were forbidden by the company, and Nathaniel considered himself a reasonable man. He couldn’t just lead his men to beat the hell out of Sheldon Caldwell’s team without the pretext of a special training exercise.
After that, Sheldon Caldwell seemed to get even more fired up and challenged Nathaniel Nathan to single combat.
The company didn’t prohibit such official matches. Besides, since they were both branch managers, they had the authority to make that call.
This was exactly what Nathaniel wanted, so he immediately agreed.
For men, competitions like target practice or other combat skills couldn’t compare to the thrill of a bare-knuckle brawl.
So the challenge was set for hand-to-hand combat. The winner would be whoever knocked the other man down.
The rule was simple and crude, and the venue was just as unrefined. They simply cleared a flat patch of ground on the training field, and the match could officially begin.
Sheldon Caldwell snorted, feeling he had to talk some trash before the fight began. "I’m going to fucking destroy you today!"
Nathaniel Nathan, calm and composed, offered a single word in reply: "Childish."
Nathaniel had said the same thing during a previous drill, and Sheldon had considered it the ultimate humiliation ever since.
With a roar, Sheldon Caldwell lunged at Nathaniel. Nathaniel sidestepped, shot out his leg in a low sweep, and sent Sheldon sprawling to the ground.
A roar of applause immediately erupted from the crowd. Someone shouted, "Way to go, Deputy General Manager Nathan!"
Someone else yelled, "Fuck him up!"
Meanwhile, Sheldon’s team members were shouting, "Deputy General Manager, you have to win this for our branch!"
"Honor my ass! I’ve always been way better than Nathaniel Nathan, alright?!" Sheldon scrambled up, spat on the ground, and charged at Nathaniel again.
He was much steadier this time, and his punches were vicious.
His combat skills were quite impressive. Now that he was fighting Nathaniel for real, he actually wasn’t at a major disadvantage.
They traded several blows. The corners of Sheldon’s mouth and eye were bruised, while Nathaniel’s sleeve had been torn.
People from both branch companies cheered for their respective deputy general managers. But Nathaniel’s special assistant, Nolan Rowan, noticed something was off. Given Nathaniel’s skill, a fight against Sheldon shouldn’t have taken this long to decide a winner.
For it to have dragged on this long, there was only one possibility: Nathaniel was toying with Sheldon.
Nolan Rowan silently sympathized with Sheldon. ’What rotten luck,’ he thought. ’To run right into Nathaniel’s line of fire like that. A beating like this will probably leave Sheldon sore for ten days, maybe even half a month.’
In the blink of an eye, Sheldon took two more punches.
At this, Nolan was even more certain of his assessment. As a special assistant, his situational awareness was naturally far superior to the average person’s. He shouted, "That’s about enough!"
He was afraid things would get out of hand if the fight continued. Nathaniel was a handful, and that Spencer Caldwell wasn’t a walk in the park, either!
