Once Vera Xavier finished speaking, she shot upstairs in a flash. From downstairs, Nathaniel Nathan could still hear the door close above.
Nathaniel Nathan raised an eyebrow. ’This little fox is getting harder and harder to fool. It’s probably going to be more difficult to secure any ’benefits’ for myself from now on.’
He straightened up, his brow furrowing slightly. ’I need to go home and have a serious talk with my parents. I have to find a way to announce our engagement as soon as possible. This can’t go on.’
He called out, "Even if you shut the door, I can easily get onto the second floor. I’m letting you off the hook for tonight! Next time we meet, you’ll pay me back with interest."
With that, he opened the door and left.
Vera Xavier had no doubt he could get to the second floor; his window-climbing skills were top-notch. When she heard the car engine start outside, she pulled open the curtains. She saw that he hadn’t gotten in the car yet; instead, he was leaning against the front of it.
He saw her looking, glanced up at her, then opened the car door and drove away.
Vera Xavier propped her head on her hand, watching him, and chuckled softly.
’Was he trying to threaten me today? Whatever. It’s not like I’m easily intimidated. I’ll deal with "next time" when it comes!’
’The worst that could happen is that he’ll... devour me. And I’m... not afraid! Ugh, fine. Maybe I’m a little afraid...’
Although Nathaniel Nathan returned a little late, at least he came back. This fact left Brooke Mitchell quite satisfied. ’See? I knew it,’ she thought. ’My son is definitely not the type of shallow man who only cares about looks.’
But Nathaniel Nathan had returned far too late. Otherwise, she would have pulled him aside for a good brainwashing, to tell him that the more beautiful a woman is, the more dangerous she is, and that an overly intelligent woman is a terrifying creature.

So she knocked on his door, but there was no sound from inside. She quickly pushed the door open and went in. The comforter on the bed was folded neatly, and on his desk was a note: "Mom, I went to the company."
All of Brooke Mitchell’s motivation instantly evaporated. ’If you were going to the company, you could have said so earlier!’ she fumed internally.
After her flash of anger, she felt a wave of helplessness. The company had a lot of rules; when a task was assigned, it had to be carried out. Her heart ached for her son, but she felt powerless. This was just the way it was with the career he had chosen.
By now, Beckett Nathan had gone to work, leaving her all alone in the house. She was suddenly overcome with loneliness.
Whenever she felt lonely, she would go to the study to paint. But today, the moment she walked into the study, she saw Vera Xavier’s painting.
Looking at it again today, she still had to admit it was a very good painting. But then she remembered her conversation with Vera Xavier from the day before, snorted, and promptly tore the painting to shreds, tossing it into the trash can.
But even after throwing the painting in the trash, her heart couldn’t find peace. On the contrary, the moment she picked up a paintbrush, the image of Vera Xavier painting the previous night flooded her mind.
She was so irritated that she threw down her paintbrush, no longer in the mood to paint today.
Coming out of the study, she saw the pastries she had bought early that morning sitting on the dining table, untouched. She couldn’t help but sigh. Suddenly, life felt incredibly dull.
