Chapter 562: Chapter 562: He Has Acknowledged Her (4)
"Hello, Cooper," Nathaniel Nathan greeted him politely. "I just got back."
"Your girlfriend?" Cooper asked, pointing at Vera Xavier.
"Yes," Nathaniel Nathan said, turning to look at Vera Xavier. "Vera, this is Cooper."
Vera Xavier recognized Cooper as a major figure. He was always stern and unsmiling on television, but right now, his smile was warm. She said respectfully, "Hello, Cooper."
Cooper laughed heartily and teased Nathaniel Nathan. "I used to think you’d have a hard time finding a girlfriend. I never expected you to have one already! Kid, you’ve got good taste."
Nathaniel Nathan returned a smile, then led Vera Xavier toward the Nathan family home.
As soon as they left, a few of the other neighbors gathered around. "Cooper, is that girl really the Nathan boy’s girlfriend?"
"Yes, that’s what Nathaniel said just now."
"That can’t be right. Didn’t people say the Nathan boy’s girlfriend was some country girl? But the girl just now was stunning, and her demeanor was so refined. How could she possibly be from the countryside?"
"I wouldn’t know about that. But the girl is certainly lovely. I’d say she’s even a cut above the Caldwell girl."
Previously, everyone in the compound considered Susan Caldwell the most outstanding girl of the younger generation.
The group chatted and laughed. It was just a bit of light gossip; to the older generation, the affairs of their juniors were trivial matters.
The compound was very large, and both the Nathan and Caldwell families lived within it. They interacted occasionally, but due to their different professional standings, their relationship was essentially just one of nodding acquaintances.
Susan Caldwell came out just in time to overhear their conversation. Her hands unconsciously clenched into fists. Earlier today, she’d heard Brooke Mitchell invite Nathaniel Nathan home for dinner. She had assumed that after everything that had happened, Vera Xavier would never dare to follow Nathaniel back to the Nathan family’s house.
Only now did she realize she had underestimated Vera Xavier. She gritted her teeth and cursed, "So shameless!"
But after cursing, there was nothing she could do. Given the nature of the relationship between the Caldwell and Nathan families, she couldn’t just barge into their home, even if they lived in the same compound.
She returned home, her face cold. Winter Sullivan hadn’t returned from the research institute, and Julian Caldwell wasn’t off work yet. At home, only Sheldon Caldwell and Shane Caldwell were there, sitting in front of the TV playing video games.
After joining Winter Sullivan and the rest of the Caldwell family for a gathering yesterday, Shane Caldwell was now temporarily staying at their house. The reason given was that since he and Susan Caldwell had both gotten into Veridia University, it would be more convenient for them to go to school together.
Before Shane Caldwell’s current trip to Veridia, Susan Caldwell had only met him a few times. In fact, deep down, she rather looked down on this branch of the Caldwell family who had grown up in Crestfall.
However, she had always been good at keeping up appearances, so she made it seem as though she warmly welcomed Shane Caldwell’s temporary stay.
Just as Shane Caldwell and Sheldon Caldwell finished a round of their game, Sheldon clapped Shane on the shoulder and said, "As expected of a top student who got into Veridia University. You’re really something, kid."
The two joked around for a bit before the house phone rang. After taking the call, Sheldon Caldwell went to his room to pack his things. He then said to Shane Caldwell, "Something’s come up at the base, so I have to head back." He then called out, "Susan, take good care of Shane. I’m heading out!"
Susan Caldwell couldn’t wait for Sheldon to leave, so she readily agreed. She even had the housekeeper prepare a fruit platter and bring it to him.
