Beckett Nathan stated decisively, "You’re my wife. Who would dare to bully you?"
Brooke Mitchell found his words pleasing enough, but then Beckett Nathan added, "But you have to trust Nathaniel’s judgment, too! That kid has always had a good eye for people."
"That’s not exactly true," Brooke Mitchell said. After thinking hard, she finally managed to come up with a flimsy reason: "This situation is different. Women are the best at deception, and the prettier they are, the better they are at it. Nathaniel has hardly spent any time with girls before, so how could he possibly tell the difference!"
"Nathaniel’s all grown up. We haven’t taught him that much, so what hasn’t he learned on his own?" Beckett Nathan consoled her. "He’s an adult now; he knows what he’s doing. Don’t be so anxious. We’ll have him bring the girl over later. If she’s really no good, I won’t approve of her joining our family either."
Brooke Mitchell thought that made sense, but then she said, "But I just called him several times, and Nathaniel didn’t pick up."
"No rush. We can call him again in a little while," Beckett Nathan said in a gentle voice.
Just then, the phone rang. Brooke Mitchell quickly answered. It was Nathaniel Nathan. "Mom, you don’t have to keep calling to rush me. I’ll be back with Vera in a bit."
Brooke Mitchell knew that since Nathaniel had run into Vera Xavier at the mall today, he was bound to bring her home. Even though she expected it, hearing him say it still made her a little unhappy.
So Brooke Mitchell scoffed lightly, "Is that any way to talk to your mother? Am I not allowed to call you anymore?"
Nathaniel Nathan usually only had the patience to humor Vera Xavier; his own mother rarely enjoyed the privilege of being coaxed by him.
However, today, he wanted to prove to his own mother that he wasn’t the kind of son who forgets his mom the second he gets a girlfriend. So he said patiently, "Of course you can. Let me explain, by the way. It’s not that I wasn’t answering your calls; I left the house without my phone. During the time I wasn’t picking up, I was out buying your favorite treat: the palmiers from Zhou’s."
Brooke Mitchell knew her son’s personality all too well. It was incredibly rare for him to offer an explanation, so a good deal of her anger dissipated. Still, she said in a cool voice, "Oh, so you remembered the way back. I thought you didn’t want me as a mother anymore!"
"You don’t have to worry about that," Nathaniel Nathan said lightly. "There would be no me without my mom. How could I possibly not want you?"
Brooke Mitchell was very comforted to hear this. The mother and son exchanged a few more words, and finally, Brooke asked Nathaniel to also pick up a few chilled yellow croakers on his way.
By the time Nathaniel Nathan brought Vera Xavier to the compound, dusk was already falling, and the night was beginning to descend.
The compound in Veridia and the one in Crestfall were on completely different levels. The number of guards stationed around the perimeter was more than double that of Crestfall’s.
After following Nathaniel Nathan into the compound, she saw many influential figures she had previously only seen on television.
But right now, some of these influential figures were walking their dogs, others were carrying groceries, and some hurried past with briefcases tucked under their arms. The entire compound was filled with the bustle of everyday life.
It was Vera Xavier’s first time in the compound, and her eyes were filled with a sense of wonder. ’So, behind the screen,’ she thought, ’these important people also live ordinary lives, with the same basic needs and the full spectrum of human emotions as everyone else.’
What she didn’t know was that while she was watching them, they were also watching her. Someone smiled and greeted Nathaniel Nathan, "Nathaniel, when did you get back?"
