Shane Caldwell thanked her. Susan Caldwell sat down beside him and said with a smile, "Your grades are really good, cousin. I also heard that Crestfall No. 1 High School had the provincial top scorer. Are you close with her?"
In fact, Rona Langdon had called her before to ask about Shane Caldwell, so she already knew he had stood up for Vera Xavier. She was asking now for two reasons: first, to confirm the truth of the matter, and second, to lay the groundwork for something she planned to do in the future.
Shane Caldwell, oblivious to her ulterior motives, nodded slightly and said, "She was my deskmate, so we were pretty close."
"Deskmates!" Susan Caldwell’s voice trembled with a hint of excitement. ’I can’t believe they were actually deskmates!’
Shane Caldwell was baffled by Susan Caldwell’s excitement. She gave a slightly embarrassed smile and pressed on, "She’s so brilliant and beautiful. There must have been a lot of boys in your class who liked her, right?"
"Not really," Shane Caldwell said with a soft chuckle, recalling the events of their senior year. "She had transferred to our school from the countryside, supposedly by pulling some strings. When she first arrived, she scored a zero on every exam."
Rona Langdon had already told Susan Caldwell about the period when Vera Xavier was scoring zeros, so she knew about it. However, she had to act as if this was the first she’d heard of it, putting on a look of shock. "How could that be? Isn’t she the only student in the school’s history to get in with perfect scores on every subject? How could she get zeros on her exams?"
"She said at the time that getting a zero required the same ability as getting a perfect score, because only then could you fill out the entire exam and still manage to perfectly avoid every single correct answer." A smile played on Shane Caldwell’s lips.
"So, when she took first place in the class for the very first time, the whole school was stunned. Almost everyone thought she was cheating. Even I thought so at the time."
"However, she used her own ability to prove she wasn’t cheating. Scoring zeros before had just been her way of biding her time. From then on, she dominated, sweeping the rankings for every subject, becoming number one in the school, and finally taking the title of provincial top scorer with a perfect score on everything."
"Her transformation was so drastic that our classmates couldn’t even wrap their heads around it. By the time they finally did, the college entrance exams were already over. So back then, no boys were actually pursuing her."
As he spoke, he silently added a thought to himself: ’Except for me.’
He had discovered how wonderful she was before any of the other boys, and he’d decided to pursue her, even writing her a love letter. But the letter was intercepted by Nathaniel Nathan. Only then did he realize that someone else had already discovered her qualities and beaten him to it.
Upon hearing this, Susan Caldwell looked at him and asked, "So, cousin, did you like her?"
Shane Caldwell’s face flushed slightly. Just as he was about to change the subject, Julian Caldwell returned, bringing the conversation to a convenient end.
Although Susan Caldwell hadn’t gotten a direct answer from Shane Caldwell, his reaction had already told her everything she needed to know.
Shane Caldwell wasn’t a very talkative person. He usually only chatted with Sheldon Caldwell and had barely ever spoken to her. But today, the moment Vera Xavier’s name came up, he had become far more talkative than usual.
