Chapter 559: Chapter 559: He Has Decided on Her (Part 1)

As Brooke Mitchell spoke, her tone turned sullen. "He has time to take some young woman shopping, but he doesn’t have a moment to call and let us know he’s alright. Our son’s all grown up, and now he’s tired of us. He even snuck back to Veridia!"

Beckett Nathan was a little surprised to hear this, but he didn’t dwell on it. After all, Nathaniel had always had a mind of his own, even as a child. His military missions required secrecy, so he couldn’t tell his family about them. As a result, he rarely informed them of his travel schedule.

He chuckled. "Well, what do you know. The boy’s finally wised up. He actually knows to take a girl shopping now!"

Brooke Mitchell shot him a fierce glare. He quickly added, "It’s not a big deal. You’ve been nagging him to find someone, telling him not to date anyone from Crestfall. You keep saying girls from the countryside are unsophisticated, not poised or graceful enough. He probably got tired of hearing it, and that’s why he kept it from you."

Nathaniel had told them before about filing a marriage application, but they had assumed he was just talking and hadn’t taken it seriously. Besides, for as long as they could remember, once he set his mind to something, no one could ever stop him.

Meanwhile, the military had assumed his parents had already given their consent.

After all, marriage is a serious matter, not something to be taken lightly. Besides, Nathaniel was so exceptional that of course no one would object to him getting married.

So, the military never confirmed it with them. To this day, Nathaniel’s parents had no idea he had ever filed a marriage application, much less that he was already married.

As a result, both Beckett Nathan and Brooke Mitchell thought Nathaniel and Vera Xavier were merely dating. That was why Brooke had always believed she could still put a stop to it.

Lately, whenever Nathaniel called home, Brooke would inevitably try to change his mind, listing all the disadvantages of marrying a girl from the countryside and citing all sorts of evidence to prove her point.

Even without Susan Caldwell’s meddling today, Brooke Mitchell would have found all sorts of fault with Vera the moment she learned she was Nathaniel’s girlfriend.

Every mother-in-law in the world has her own criteria for choosing a daughter-in-law. No matter how wonderful the woman her son chooses is, if she doesn’t meet the mother’s standards in some way, there’s bound to be friction. The more domineering mothers would try to break the couple up, while the gentler ones would simply compromise.

"I haven’t been that hard on him," Brooke Mitchell grumbled, clearly still upset. "Besides, I’m only doing this for his own good. If he marries a wife from an unsuitable family—someone uncultured and with a mountain of flaws—won’t he be the one who has to deal with the headache in the end?"

In Brooke Mitchell’s mind, the most important criterion for a daughter-in-law was a matching family background. Character, looks, talent, and ability all came second to that.

What she could never understand was why Nathaniel, who was so exceptional, had his pick of all the high-society debutantes in Veridia, yet he’d never so much as given them a second glance. Instead, he had gone to Crestfall and found himself a girl from the countryside.

She had been in low spirits ever since Nathaniel first told her he was dating Vera Xavier.

Beckett Nathan knew what his wife was thinking and tried to reason with her. "Nathaniel has excellent judgment. The girl he’s chosen can’t be all that bad, even if she is from the countryside. She must have some extraordinary qualities. Why don’t you let go of your prejudice and try to get to know her?"
