So Susan Caldwell smiled and chimed in, "Yes, it was just an accident. I also believe Vera didn’t do it on purpose."

At this, Susan Caldwell added with a touch of regret, "It’s just that things blew up like this today, and Ms. Mitchell saw Vera’s prejudice against me. I’m afraid Vera and I can’t be friends anymore."

Brooke Mitchell smiled. "It’s quite normal for young people to have a bit of a temper. Vera is clearly a passionate person. Although this is my first time meeting her and I don’t know her well, I trust Nathaniel’s judgment."

In truth, Susan Caldwell had pulled a few strings to arrange this meeting with Brooke Mitchell. Neither of them said it aloud, but they both knew that, in essence, Brooke was vetting a potential daughter-in-law.

Although she had heard Master Nathan mention that Nathaniel was seeing someone in Crestfall, she always felt that Crestfall was a small town. ’A girl from a place like that probably isn’t very sophisticated,’ she thought.

She hadn’t been happy about it at the time and had even called Nathaniel to subtly probe for details about Vera Xavier. Nathaniel, however, felt that words couldn’t do Vera justice—you had to meet her to truly understand how wonderful she was—so he hadn’t said much.

Today’s meeting between Brooke Mitchell and Vera Xavier hadn’t exactly been pleasant. But with Nathaniel’s stance being so clear, she wasn’t about to speak ill of Vera.

Susan Caldwell’s hands unconsciously clenched into fists, but she kept a smile on her face. "Vera Xavier truly is outstanding. She’s wonderful."

Hearing this made Brooke Mitchell feel that Susan was all the more magnanimous and mature. Vera had poured a drink over her head, yet here she was, still praising her.

So Brooke Mitchell offered a gentle, refined smile. "You’re wonderful too. I wonder which lucky young man will have the good fortune to marry you someday."

Susan Caldwell smiled shyly, a faint blush coloring her cheeks, but said nothing more.

After Brooke Mitchell and Susan Caldwell parted ways, her smile vanished. She hurried home and immediately picked up the phone to call Nathaniel Nathan.

Nathaniel always found his phone too heavy and inconvenient to carry around, so he had left it at Vera Xavier’s villa and missed her call.

Brooke Mitchell called ten times in a row with no answer. Frustrated, she slammed the receiver down.

Just then, Beckett Nathan came home from work. He was a little surprised to see her act like that. "What’s all this?"

Brooke Mitchell was a nationally renowned painter with a gentle and reserved disposition. She rarely even raised her voice, so for her to slam the phone down so ungracefully was a rare sight, even at home.

She huffed, "Who else? It’s because of that precious son of yours!"

"Nathaniel?" Beckett Nathan chuckled. "He’s not just my precious son, he’s your precious boy, too. Are you angry because he’s back in Veridia but still hasn’t come home?"

Brooke Mitchell snorted. "So you knew he was back in Veridia! All of you were keeping it from me. If I hadn’t run into him while I was out today, I wouldn’t have even known he was back! Is there a more miserable mother in the world than me?"

"He didn’t tell me, either," Beckett Nathan said, putting an arm around her shoulder. "I only found out he got back to the base yesterday because I ran into Maverick today. He’s been working so hard these past few years, leading his unit and running missions. He’s probably just been too busy to tell you."

"That’s not it at all!" Brooke Mitchell said with a frown. "Do you know where I ran into him today? At the People’s Mall! He was out shopping with some young woman!"
