Chapter 553: Chapter 553: Revealing Her Background (3)

So Brooke Mitchell glanced at Vera Xavier and said, "As a young woman, it would be wise to have a little more self-respect."

Vera Xavier felt like she’d been caught in the crossfire. But with Brooke Mitchell’s status right there, she couldn’t really say anything to defend herself. ’I can’t just jump up and start a fight with my own mother-in-law!’

Nathaniel Nathan cut in, "I was the one holding her hand. By that logic, I’m the one with no self-respect. Mom, if you can’t stand the sight of it, then don’t look. Vera and I are leaving. You can find your own way back later."

With that, he pulled Vera Xavier up and started to walk away.

Brooke Mitchell froze for a moment. She wanted to stop him, but it felt awkward to do so. She could only call out after him, "You’re back in Veridia and you don’t even come home? That’s outrageous! You’re coming home for dinner tonight!"

Nathaniel Nathan neither agreed nor disagreed, simply leading Vera Xavier away.

Susan Caldwell stood beside Brooke Mitchell, watching as Nathaniel Nathan and Vera Xavier disappeared into the crowd. They both had such great figures that even from behind, anyone would think they were a perfect match. Her hand tightened into a fist.

Vera Xavier whispered to Nathaniel, "Do you think it was okay for us to just leave like that?"

’This meeting was already a mess thanks to Susan stirring things up. Leaving so suddenly feels wrong.’

Nathaniel retorted, "You’d rather stay there and let my mom give you a hard time?"

Vera Xavier immediately shook her head. Nathaniel said flatly, "Then what was the point of staying?"

Vera felt he had a point. ’Yes, Brooke Mitchell already has a bad impression of me. Staying any longer would have just been embarrassing.’

She reached out, tugged on his sleeve, and asked, "So, are you going home tonight?"

Instead of answering, Nathaniel asked back, "Do you want me to go home, or stay with you?"

Vera Xavier smiled. "As much as I want you to stay with me, your mom will probably be furious if you don’t go home tonight."

Nathaniel looked at her and said, "Actually, there’s a compromise. I can be with you and go home at the same time."

Vera paused, confused. Nathaniel said slowly, "Weren’t you just complaining that I was playing ’the boy who cried wolf’ with you? Well, we’re not playing anymore today. You’ve already met my mom, so there’s nothing left to be afraid of."

"You mean you’re taking me home with you tonight?" Vera asked.

"That’s right," Nathaniel said slowly. "Anyway, my mom is the toughest one to deal with in my family. You’ve already met her, so what’s there to be afraid of?"

Vera pursed her lips. It wasn’t that she was afraid of meeting Brooke Mitchell; she had just been so focused on how to make a good impression. Now that her image was more or less ruined, there really wasn’t anything left to worry about.

’In for a penny, in for a pound, I guess!’

It was just that this was all happening sooner than she had expected. Right now, apart from getting into Veridia University with a perfect score, she didn’t seem to have any other accomplishments that would impress Brooke Mitchell.

She cleared her throat and asked, "I’m not scared, but... was your mom close with Susan Caldwell before?"

"I don’t know," Nathaniel replied. "I was on missions abroad for years, so I was rarely with my mom. I’m not sure who she’s close with, but I do know my family has dealings with the Caldwell Family."

’It was only normal for two of Veridia’s prominent families to interact.’

Vera turned her head to look at him and asked, "You knew your family and the Caldwell Family had some history. So back in Trellis, after Susan Caldwell revealed who she was, why did you still lay a hand on her?"
