Chapter 552: Chapter 552: Revealing Her Background (2)

Nathaniel added, "I have unconditional faith in Vera. I believe every single word she says is true, and I hope you can trust my judgment, Mom."

Hearing his words, Susan Caldwell felt a stifling frustration. ’He... What on earth did Vera do to him to make him trust her so completely!’

Brooke Mitchell glanced from Vera to Nathaniel. She couldn’t quite make sense of her own feelings, only that a fire was simmering in her chest.

Nathaniel was her son, her pride. Over the years, his actions had always proven his excellent judgment. But what Vera had just done had crossed a major line for her.

But she was a rational woman and would always give her son enough face. No matter how displeased she was with Vera, she would never publicly humiliate her own son.

So, she took a deep breath and said, "Is that so? Then perhaps it really was a misunderstanding."

With that, she turned her head to look at Susan Caldwell.

Susan Caldwell was a clever woman. Ultimately, all the trouble she had stirred up today was for the sole purpose of ruining Vera’s image in Brooke Mitchell’s eyes.

Now that things had come to this, her goal was achieved. Knowing it was time to quit while she was ahead, she quickly said, "Yes, Auntie Mitchell. It was all just a misunderstanding. Please don’t be angry."

Brooke Mitchell reached out and gently patted the back of her hand, both to soothe her and to express her appreciation for Susan’s tactfulness in the situation.

Brooke Mitchell smiled and said, "Since it was a misunderstanding, it’s good that we’ve cleared it up. But you can’t keep wearing those wet clothes. Go pick out a new outfit from the shop. Nathaniel, you go with Susan!"

Nathaniel shot his mother a cold look, but Brooke Mitchell just continued with the introductions. "Oh, by the way, Nathaniel, this is your first time meeting Susan, isn’t it? She’s Mr. Caldwell’s daughter."

Susan Caldwell said in a soft, gentle voice, "Auntie Mitchell, Nathan and I have met before. Hello, Nathan. Thank you for your help last time."

Nathaniel gave a cold smirk and turned his head, not even deigning to look at her. ’He’d never helped her!’

"Oh, really?" Brooke Mitchell said with a laugh. "What a coincidence! It must be fate. Come on, come on, don’t just stand here. Go pick out an outfit!"

And so, Brooke Mitchell took Susan by one hand and Nathaniel by the other, completely ignoring Vera.

Vera lightly bit her lip and sighed inwardly. ’So much for her first meeting with her mother-in-law. She’d left an absolutely terrible impression. It wouldn’t be an easy thing to fix.’

Nathaniel was not happy with his mother’s arrangement. He pulled his hand free, turned to Vera, and said, "Come here."

Vera smiled faintly and walked over. He immediately took her hand in his.

Brooke Mitchell was a little surprised by Nathaniel’s actions. She knew her son better than anyone. He was usually cold and aloof, never getting close to anyone, let alone having any female friends.

Most importantly, Nathaniel was actually a bit of a germaphobe and rarely let anyone touch him. Once, when he was little, she had gone to hug him right after washing her hands, without drying them completely. He had immediately stripped off his clothes and changed into a fresh set.

But now, he was actually holding Vera’s hand!

Brooke Mitchell was stunned. ’It’s awkward to criticize my own son, but surely I can say something to someone else, right?’
