Chapter 547: Meeting the Parents (5)

Chapter 547: Chapter 547: Meeting the Parents (5)

Vera Xavier looked at Nathaniel Nathan with a wronged expression and said, "Of course not! I don’t normally dress up like this, so I don’t usually have so many people staring at me!"

’That’s right. I’m doing this on purpose to annoy him,’ she thought. ’Serves him right for teasing me!’

Nathaniel gave her a cold look. She sighed again and said, "It’s all your fault for making me look so pretty!"

Nathaniel Nathan: "..."

’So it’s my fault now?’

He said in a cold voice, "I dressed you up like this for *me* to see, not for other men. And another thing, why were you smiling at them?"

Vera looked even more aggrieved. "Nathaniel, that’s such tyrannical logic! You’re the one who wanted me to dress up and come out, but now you’re saying no one else can look? That’s completely unreasonable! Besides, I wasn’t smiling *at* them. They were just greeting me, and as a civilized and polite upstanding citizen, smiling back is just basic courtesy. What part of that is wrong?"

Nathaniel Nathan: "..."

Vera sniffled softly and said, "Didn’t your teachers ever teach you to be polite when you were in school?"

Nathaniel stared at her coldly, but she just gave him a look of pure innocence in return.

’She’s such a handful,’ he thought. ’Every time I tease her, she finds a way to get back at me.’

Their eyes met, and Vera was the first to soften. Pouting slightly, she looked at him and asked, "What did I do wrong? Why are you looking at me so angrily?"

Nathaniel ground his teeth. On second thought, her little speech did seem to make sense... but what kind of twisted logic was that, really? He glared at her and said, "Stop playing dumb with me."

Vera spread her hands, indicating she had no idea what he meant.

Seeing her act this way, Nathaniel was no longer angry. He just said, "I’ll deal with you when we get home."

When Vera heard the heavy emphasis he placed on the words "deal with," she couldn’t help but shiver. Her eyes darted around as a counter-strategy quickly formed in her mind. ’If he dares to ’deal with’ me, I’ll just have to use my secret weapon.’

But that was a matter for when they got home. They had finally managed to get out for a shopping trip, and she couldn’t let something so trivial ruin the atmosphere. She’d always wanted to experience what dating felt like, so she tugged on his hand and said coaxingly, "Nathaniel, I want some ice cream. Will you buy me some, please?"

Nathaniel had been seething with frustration, but the moment he saw her impossibly sweet and obedient expression, the fire inside him was instantly extinguished.

But he still grumbled, "If you want some, can’t you buy it yourself? Women are such a pain!"

Despite his words, he had already turned and started walking toward a small ice cream shop nearby.

Vera saw his contradictory behavior and let out a light laugh. His words might be harsh, but he treated her exceptionally well.

She had always been envious of those delicate girls who could wheedle their boyfriends into running little errands for them. To her, simple things like this were the easiest way to feel a sense of bliss.

Waiting for Nathaniel by herself was a little boring, so she clasped her hands behind her back and looked around. Then she discovered that it was a small world, after all—she had run into an acquaintance.

In a nearby restaurant, Susan Caldwell was eating with an elegantly dressed middle-aged woman. Susan was smiling demurely and even used the serving chopsticks to place food on the older woman’s plate. Vera couldn’t hear what they were saying, but the woman laughed, and it was obvious the two of them were having a pleasant time together.
