Chapter 548: Chapter 548: Going to Meet the Parents (6)
Vera Xavier had always known Susan Caldwell was a great actress. To be so good at it that even her own parents had no idea what she did behind their backs—that was a skill in itself.
Susan Caldwell saw Vera Xavier as well. She seemed a little surprised, but quickly composed herself and even offered Vera a faint smile. To Vera’s eyes, that smile held a hint of provocation.
Vera couldn’t be bothered with Susan. Her war with Susan wasn’t about petty squabbles like this.
However, just because she ignored her didn’t mean Susan was ready to let it go.
Susan said something to the middle-aged woman, who then glanced in the direction Susan pointed, toward Vera. The woman gave a gentle nod, and Susan casually grabbed a bottled drink and walked out of the store.
Susan walked right up to Vera. "What a coincidence, running into you again. We must be fated to meet. A fate like this, though, is truly disgusting."
Vera smiled faintly and asked, "What do you want? Are you looking for trouble?"
Now that they were alone, neither bothered to hide her disgust for the other.
Susan raised an eyebrow slightly. "A young lady like you, why so violent? I don’t mean anything by it. I just saw you standing here all by yourself, looking bored, and thought I’d bring you a drink."
With that, she held the drink out in front of Vera. "I heard Crestfall is a poor place, and you grew up in the countryside. You’ve probably never even had a drink this nice before. We’re acquaintances, after all. We’ve had our disagreements in the past, but how about we let bygones be bygones today?"
The first half of her statement was clearly demeaning, while the second half was meant to display her magnanimity.
Vera had to admit, Susan really had a way with words. She could infuriate someone in an instant.
Most importantly, while Susan’s face held a gentle smile, her eyes were filled with mockery.
The combination of the two expressions screamed her supposed superiority.
Vera chuckled softly, glancing at the drink in Susan’s hand before saying coolly, "You might have something wrong. Whether or not we ’let bygones be bygones’ is my call. You don’t have the right to make that decision."
"As for that bottle in your hand, are you kidding me? A person like me, with a net worth in the tens of millions, can’t afford a cheap drink like this? You should take it back and drink it yourself. And just a friendly reminder, I’m your biggest creditor now. You should be pinching every penny to pay back your debt."
Susan wasn’t provoked today. She just pushed the drink toward Vera again and said coolly, "Even with all that money, you can’t change the fact that you’re a pheasant from the mud, while I’m a phoenix from the heavens. Consider this drink a gift from me. No need to be polite."
After speaking, she reached for Vera’s hand. ’This is strange,’ Vera thought. ’Why is Susan so insistent on giving me this drink? What is she plotting?’
Wary, Vera took a step back, shaking off Susan’s hand. Then she saw the triumphant look on Susan’s face.
The cap on Susan’s drink had already been twisted open. When Vera shook her hand away, the entire contents of the bottle spilled all over Susan.
Susan was wearing a snow-white dress today. The pale yellow liquid completely ruined it, leaving her looking utterly wretched.
