Winter Sullivan barely exchanged a few words with Vera Xavier the entire time. She just listened to Vera and Susan Caldwell talk. Based on her woman’s intuition, Winter Sullivan felt there must be something more going on between Susan Caldwell and Vera Xavier that she didn’t know about.

He turned to Susan Caldwell and asked, "Susan, what on earth happened between you and her in Trellis?"
He had seen what Vera Xavier was capable of. And while he thought his own sister was no slouch, he didn’t believe for a second that Susan Caldwell could have gotten the upper hand on Vera Xavier. The fact that Susan was being so tight-lipped about her made him certain that something major had happened.
Susan Caldwell gave a hollow laugh. "It was just a small misunderstanding back then, but we cleared it all up. We’re actually good friends now."
"Really?" Spencer Caldwell immediately called her out on it. "If you two are such good friends, why did you say what you said when she was arguing with that other girl just now?"
That initial comment was the biggest hole in Susan Caldwell’s story. If they were truly good friends, she wouldn’t have said that; she would have defended Vera Xavier.
Hearing this, Winter Sullivan also turned to look at Susan Caldwell. Susan had always been quick on her feet, so she said, a bit embarrassed, "We were too far away. I didn’t get a clear look and couldn’t tell it was her."
Spencer Caldwell knew his sister too well and clearly didn’t believe her. He just smiled and said, "You girls and your fragile friendships."
Susan Caldwell also laughed. "But I really didn’t recognize her!"
Winter Sullivan glanced at her and said, "I quite like her personality, actually. You two were friends and now you’re classmates—it seems like fate. You should bring her over to the house sometime when you’re free."
Susan Caldwell’s heart skipped a beat. ’Winter Sullivan is actually inviting Vera Xavier to our house?’ She didn’t dare reveal too much of her turmoil, so she just forced a smile and said, "Okay!"
’As far as she knew, Winter Sullivan had always been cold and aloof, never bothering to put on a pleasant face for anyone. Not a single one of her friends had ever received an invitation from her. And now she wanted her to invite Vera Xavier?’
Susan Caldwell couldn’t help but wonder, ’Does Winter Sullivan know something?’ But she quickly dismissed the idea. ’If she really knew, she wouldn’t ask me to invite her. She would have just contacted Vera Xavier directly without ever going through me.’
With that thought, Susan Caldwell felt a little more at ease.
She made a silent vow. ’From now on, I have to find a way to keep Vera Xavier away from everyone in the Caldwell family. I’m never letting Winter Sullivan or Spencer Caldwell come to the school again!’
