Vera Xavier took one look at Susan Caldwell and knew she’d managed to sweep the matter concerning Trellis under the rug again. Vera had to admit, she was actually quite impressed by Susan’s ability in this regard—to be able to say such things against her conscience at a time like this.
But this was the first time Vera and Winter Sullivan had met, so there was no need to say too much. After all, they were still strangers, and saying more would only be counterproductive. It was better to stop after making her point. Besides, she was in Veridia now; there would be plenty of opportunities later.
Scaring her a little today was enough.
So, Vera Xavier smiled, her eyes sparkling as she looked at Susan Caldwell and said, "Is that so?"
Though she didn’t finish her sentence, Susan Caldwell could read her meaning: ’Whether this is over, and how it will end, isn’t your call to make. It’s mine.’
Susan Caldwell was panicking inside. She was terrified that the Trellis incident would be brought to light, and equally afraid that the truth about their backgrounds would be exposed. All she could do was force herself to remain calm and squeeze out another smile. "Of course it is! We’re good friends!"
Vera Xavier smiled too. That’s right—when she had thoroughly defeated Susan Caldwell, she had said they should be "friends."
She nodded. "Yes, we’re good friends now. Speaking of which, it must be fate. We met in Trellis, and then we both got into Veridia University. I used to hear people say you can’t stop fate when it comes knocking, and I didn’t believe it. Now I do. It really is true!"
Susan Caldwell was inwardly fuming. ’Who would want this kind of fate! Who wants to be fated to cross paths with Vera Xavier!’
On the outside, however, she was still smiling. "Yes, it is. It’s actually quite interesting, now that you mention it."
After saying that, she added, "I got into Veridia University as the top scorer from Veridia. What about you?"
’My score is so good, no matter how brilliant Vera is, there’s no way she could have beaten me!’
But she was destined for disappointment today.
"That makes it even more like fate," Vera Xavier said with a smile. "I also got in as the top scorer in my province."
Damian Yale, who had walked over at some point, said coolly, "She’s not just the top scorer in her province, she’s also the first student in the history of Veridia University to be admitted with a perfect score on all subjects."

The advantage she thought she had was utterly obliterated.
Vera Xavier smiled at Susan Caldwell. "I got a perfect score on all subjects. You’re happy for me, aren’t you?"
’Happy for you, my ass!’ Susan Caldwell cursed internally. Outwardly, however, she smiled and said, "Of course I’m happy for you. I’m delighted to have such an outstanding friend."
Vera Xavier glanced over at Damian Yale. He gave her a faint smile. "It’s getting late. Let me walk you to your dorm."
’His personality is so hard to figure out,’ Vera thought. ’Our first impressions of each other weren’t even that great, but now he’s acting like we’re old friends.’
’But I really don’t know him at all. We’ve known each other for less than half an hour!’
After he spoke, he took the handle of Vera Xavier’s small rolling suitcase and started walking directly toward the dorms. At this point, Vera could only follow him.
She smiled at Susan Caldwell and said, "I’ll be going then. Goodbye!"
Susan Caldwell couldn’t wait for her to leave. For the first time, the stiff smile on her face held a hint of sincerity. "Okay, goodbye."
