Vera Xavier never expected that her first meeting with Winter Sullivan would be through an introduction from Sheldon Caldwell.
She glanced at Winter Sullivan involuntarily. Winter was a serious woman, and even though she was dressed casually today, she still seemed unapproachable.
Winter Sullivan’s skin was very fair. Despite her age, her pores were still tight, and because she rarely smiled, she had almost no wrinkles at the corners of her eyes.
Her features were relatively defined, which added a certain sharpness to her entire demeanor.
Vera Xavier and Winter Sullivan didn’t look much alike; Vera had only inherited Winter’s snow-white complexion.
For some reason, however, the same Winter Sullivan who seemed so unapproachable to others felt incredibly familiar and kind to Vera. She felt no fear whatsoever.
’This must be what they call the bond of blood,’ Vera thought. ’Even though it’s our first time meeting, she doesn’t feel like a stranger at all.’
The moment Winter Sullivan saw Vera Xavier, she felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity. She was usually a woman of few words, but now she found herself asking, "Have we met somewhere before?"
Just one glance gave Winter Sullivan an indescribable feeling about Vera. It was as if she was supposed to know her. It was the first time Winter had ever felt this way, and it was utterly strange.
Before Vera Xavier could answer, Susan Caldwell’s face went white with fright. She quickly interjected, "Mom, you’re in the lab every day. You barely see anyone. How could you have possibly met her!"
They had been watching the incident between Vera Xavier and Autumn Rhodes from the sidelines just moments before. They saw Autumn Rhodes’ subtle move to break her own bracelet, and they saw the bead hit Autumn’s nose after Vera stepped on it.
At the time, Susan Caldwell had quietly badmouthed Vera to Sheldon Caldwell and Winter Sullivan. "That girl is obviously a schemer," she’d whispered. "She looks all calm and collected, but she was just waiting for a chance to cause trouble. I’m sure she deliberately used that bead to hit the other girl’s nose."
Neither Sheldon Caldwell nor Winter Sullivan had responded to this, nor did they agree with her. After all, Autumn Rhodes had been the one to break the bracelet first, hoping to make Vera fall and embarrass herself. Even if Vera had retaliated on purpose, it was understandable.
Unless they were a complete coward, no one would be willing to get schemed against and not fight back.
"I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Sullivan before," Vera said with a smile, "but Miss Susan Caldwell, we have met. In Trellis, remember?"
The incident in Trellis had always been a sore spot for Susan Caldwell. Now that Vera had brought it up right in front of Winter Sullivan, her expression turned extremely ugly.
She cursed Sheldon Caldwell internally. ’How could Sheldon possibly know Vera Xavier?’ she fumed. ’How could two people who have absolutely nothing to do with each other even meet?’
’If I’d known this was going to happen, I never would have let Sheldon give me a ride!’
Susan Caldwell still hadn’t said a word when Winter Sullivan spoke up, asking Vera, "You were involved in that incident in Trellis?"
Vera nodded with a smile. "That’s right, I was. Susan Caldwell and I had a bit of a misunderstanding back then. We even made a bet..."
"That was just a joke between us," Susan Caldwell cut in, interrupting Vera. She was afraid that if Vera said any more, the truth about Trellis—which she had worked so hard to conceal—would be exposed. "It’s all in the past. There’s nothing more to say."
Her gaze toward Vera held a clear warning, but inwardly, she was a nervous wreck. Her palms were slick with sweat.
