Autumn Rhodes knew Damian Yale would recognize the beads as hers. She absolutely couldn’t ruin her image in front of him.
So she said gently, "I’m fine. This was probably just a coincidence."
"I think it’s quite a coincidence, too." Vera Xavier nodded in agreement. "Maybe your beads recognize their owner. Otherwise, of all the places it could have gone, why did it have to fly right at your nose?"
Autumn Rhodes was furious when she heard that, but she could only swallow her anger. She had to force a faint smile and say, "Yes, what a coincidence indeed."
One of the boys had already picked up the bead and returned it to Autumn Rhodes. Her nose had stopped bleeding by now, but the stinging sensation hadn’t faded. Her gaze toward Vera Xavier was anything but friendly.
Vera Xavier, however, didn’t seem to care. With a faint smile, she was about to turn away when she heard someone call her name. "Vera Xavier!"
The voice was familiar and excited. She turned and saw Sheldon Caldwell standing not far away, watching her with a wide grin. When he saw her look over, he gave her a wave.
When Vera saw Susan Caldwell beside him, she understood why he was here. By blood, he was her biological brother, and they had gotten to know each other back in Crestfall.
She gave him a small smile and a slight nod, about to leave, but he waved her over.
She hadn’t really wanted to go, but upon seeing Susan Caldwell’s long face and the stern, aloof-looking middle-aged woman beside him, she decided it was necessary to go over.
If she wasn’t mistaken, that woman was Sheldon Caldwell’s mother—and also her own.
She truly hadn’t expected to meet Winter Sullivan so soon in this life. For some reason, she felt an inexplicable sense of nervousness.
After taking the pushcart back from Damian Yale, she walked over to Sheldon Caldwell.
Damian Yale watched her go, his brow furrowed slightly. His gaze on Sheldon Caldwell darkened. Sheldon was sunny and handsome, with a distinguished air, and he seemed to know Vera very well.
Sheldon Caldwell paid him no mind, his smiling eyes fixed on Vera. Once she was close, he grinned and said, "Vera Xavier, what a coincidence! You got into Veridia University too? Are you here by yourself? Didn’t Nathaniel come to see you off?"
Vera smiled. "You’ve got a lot of questions. Which one should I answer first?"
Sheldon chuckled. Since Vera was here now, she had to be a new student at Veridia University. He suddenly felt that bragging in front of Nathaniel yesterday had been pretty stupid. No wonder Nathaniel had given him that look.
And she had no one with her. Nathaniel was busy today, so of course she was alone.
It seemed he had just asked a bunch of pointless questions.
Sheldon laughed. "You’re just full of surprises."
Vera just smiled. Their connection was, at its core, through Nathaniel. With him not around, she didn’t really have much to say to Sheldon. So, she turned her gaze to Susan Caldwell and Winter Sullivan.
Sheldon immediately got the hint and began the introductions. "Mom, this is Vera Xavier."
Then he gestured to Winter Sullivan and said to Vera, "This is my mom!"
Vera gave Winter Sullivan a polite nod and a small smile. "Hello."
Her expression was calm, but inside, her feelings were a whirlwind. In this life and the last, this was the first time she had ever been so close to her own biological mother.
